On August 27th, 2005, YTMND user mydogyoshi created a page titled “Slug in a Salt Maze”, which featured a photograph of a slug navigating a maze made out of table salt (shown below).

On June 13th, 2012, Redditor Nabillia submitted a screenshot of a Facebook post featuring a dead slug who failed to traverse a slug maze to the /r/funny^[1] subreddit (shown below). Prior to being archived, the post gained over 1,700 votes (93% upvoted).

On October 8th, 2014, Redditor marky_mark301 submitted a photograph of a young boy standing in front of a partially burned ramen noodle container inside a microwave to the /r/pics^[4] subreddit in a post titled “He just wanted some noodles” (shown below, left). On October 11th, Redditor onebigbagostupid posted an image macro using the photo with a caption about accidentally putting ice cream in a refrigerator titled “Introducing: Mistake Marvin” to the /r/AdviceAnimals^[1] subreddit, where it gained over 3,000 votes (84% upvoted) in the first 48 hours (shown below, right). The top-voted comment was submitted by Redditor McGotham, who suggested that the series be called “Minor Mistake Marvin.”

On the same day, Redditor BrojobBrojob submitted an image macro about forgetting to turn on a slow cooker before leaving for work to /r/AdviceAnimals^[2] (shown below, left). Also on October 11th, Redditor CakeSwag submitted a Minor Mistake Marvin image macro joking about accidentally calling a teacher “Mom” to /r/AdviceAnimals^[5] (shown below, right). In the following 48 hours, the posts gathered more than 3,400 votes (93% upvoted) and 3,000 votes (79% upvoted) respectively.

On October 12th, the /r/TodayIMarvinedUp^[3] subreddit was launched for notable Minor Mistake Marvin examples. The same day, Redditor BrojobBrojob’s image macro was reposted to 9gag,^[6] where it accumulated upwards of 2,900 points and 50 comments in 24 hours.

Evangelion Opening Parodies refer to a series of parody videos for the opening credit movie of the Japanese TV anime Neon Genesis Evangelion produced by Studio Gainax.

Origin

The TV anime series aired 26 episodes between October 1995 and March 1996, and gave a huge impact to the Japanese subculture. The opening movie for the anime is known for the characteristic rendition in the latter part which inserts foreshadowing characters and keywords consecutively without staff credits. Its theme song “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” (Japanese: 残酷な天使のテーゼ, Zankoku na Tanshi no Thesis)^[1] made a large success on the music market, too. The number of CD/digital copies for the song had reached over 1 million in January 2014.

A huge amount of fan works for the historical hit anime have been created since late-1990s, and borh of this opening credit movie with the challenging rendition and its theme song have been one of the popular subjects for MAD, hand-drawn animation, live-action and filksong. And it’s still popular on 2channel, YouTube^[2] and Nico Nico Douga.^[3] Those parodies/fan works are usually named by the phrasal templates“X-gelion” (○○ゲリオン) or “A Cruel X’s Thesis” (残酷な○○のテーゼ).

Meanwhile, those parody videos have been often removed from the video hub sites due to the copyright claims by Studio Khara^[4] and King Records.^[5] That’s because both of copyright holders for the movie and the song have particularly unfriendly attitude toward fan creations utilizing their own contents.

Live-Action Parodies

Overview

No Bra Day is a novelty holiday celebrated by women who choose to go braless for a day on either July 9th or October 13th, with the latter date designated in observance of the National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Despite its mission to raise public awareness of breast cancer, the holiday has been also met with criticism of unintended objectification.

Background

On October 10th, 2010, 9gag^[2] created and posted an image of a woman taking off her bra declaring October 13th, to be No Bra Day.

On October 12th, IGN^[1] user ZIIIIING re-posted the image on IGN’s message board.

Notable Developments

On July 8th, 2011, The Stir^[11] published a post titled “It’s National No Bra Day -- Who’s Joining Me?” which focused on liberation rather than breast cancer or health.

On October 13th, 2012, the blog Cancer in My Thirties^[10]“National No Bra Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Month -- OR -- Please Put That Pink Can of Soup Down & Put Your Bra Back On.” The post gained over 130,000 within a year. In the post the author explains her problem with the day, saying:

“Are you kidding me? How on earth could a day where girls and women are encouraged to post and share photos of their braless breasts and to walk around with their nipples poking through their shirts be “supportive” for women who are living with or who have died from breast cancer, or who have managed to ‘complete’ the arduous treatments and disfiguring surgeries required to put them into remission?

On October 13th, UpRoxx^[3] published a post titled “13 Busty Women Who Should Definitely Take Part In “No Bra Day” Today.”

Hashtag

On October 7th, 2014, Twitter user ShaunaElaine24^[5] introduced the hashtag #NoBraDay referring to October 13th, and trying it together with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Within a week the hashtag^[6] was tweeted out over 200,000 times.

On October 13th, the hashtag trended on Twitter the same day The Daily Dot^[7] published an article titled “Terrible hashtag campaign #NoBraDay is sexualizing breast cancer,” which featured tweets from Twitter users against the hashtag and day.

The day was covered by many other sites on October 13th, including Vibe^[8] and Idolator.^[9]

RKO Vine Remixes are a series of Vine videos in which an animated sprite image of American professional wrestler Randy Orton performing his signature cutter move “RKO” is edited into various clips of people tripping over or falling down on the ground.

Origin

On May 11th, 2013, Real Madrid of Spanish Primera League and Juventus of Italian Serie A butted heads in their group-stage match at the UEFA Champions League tournament. With only a few minutes remaining in the first half, Juventus’ Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal was granted a penalty kick opportunity after he was seen suddenly falling over to the ground in mid-dribble. Vidal’s penalty-earning fall quickly became a talking point of the match as some fans suspected that the Juventus player deliberately dove without any interference from the defense. In the replay footage, however, Vidal is shown tripping over the ball as a result of a misaimed kick at the ground (shown below). The game ended in a tie after Real Madrid caught up with two equalizers (2 – 2).

Over a year later, on October 12th, 2014, Viner Wrestling LAD uploaded a parody version of Vidal’s fall with an animated cutout of Orton rushing towards the Juventus player and executing his signature “RKO” cutter move (shown below). Within 48 hours of upload, the video gained over 1,300 revines and 1,200 likes.

The same day, Redditor LongAlanIcedT submitted a post requesting RKO Vine remixes to the /r/SquaredCircle^[1] subreddit. Also on October 13th, Viner Cameron/Prohne uploaded a video in which a skater is tackled off a bridge by Orton (shown below). In 24 hours, the video received more than 1,700 revines and 1,500 likes.

On October 14th, Viner Scully1986 uploaded a video of a giraffe being tackled by Orton, garnering upwards of 550 likes and 480 revines in the next three hours (shown below). In the coming days, several news sites published articles about the Vine videos, including SB Nation,^[2] Bleacher Report^[3] and For the Win.^[4]

#WhenIMarryMyself is a Twitterhashtag which spread in response to a tweet sent out by National Organization for Marriage, a group against legalizing gay marriage in the United States, which suggested legalizing gay marriage could lead to marrying yourself to become legal. The hashtag quickly became a way to make jokes about what the Twitter user would do if they married themselves.

On October 13th, 2014, the Twitter account for the National Organization for Marriage^[1] sent out a tweet which asked "When #marriage is redefined, what prevents a person from “marrying” his/herself?" and included a link to an article which referenced Grace Gelder,^[2] a woman who held a non-legally binding wedding ceremony for herself.

The Organization for Marriage concluded:

“When marriage is devalued and its nature loosely defined, what prevents marriage norms--such as sexual complementarity, monogamy, exclusivity, permanence, or even the idea that marriage requires two people--from being broken down as well?”

The same day Twitter user Clarknt67^[4] introduced the hashtag #WhenIMarryMyself, tweeting it at the National Organization of Marriage.

Within 24 hours the hashtag was tweeted^[5] out over 2,000 times. Amethyst Amelia Kelly, better known as “Iggy Azalea,” is an Australian rapper who rose to fame in 2011 after her controversial music video for the track “Pu$$y” was uploaded to YouTube.

Early Career

In 2006, Kelly traveled to the United States at the age of 15 and informed her parents she would not be returning to Australia. After living briefly in Miami, Florida and Houston, Texas, Kelly joined the hip hop collective Dungeon Family in Atlanta, Georgia and took the stage name Iggy Azalea. Food That Looks Like Iggy Azalea

On August 17th, 2014, the Tumblr blog Food That Looks Like Iggy Azalea was created, which features photos of food juxtaposed with images of Azalea which bear similarities in pattern or color.

Feud with Snoop Dogg

On October 12th, 2014, rapper Snoop Dogg posted a photograph of a person with albinism and the caption “Iggy Azalea no make up” to his Instagram^[2] feed, gaining over 48,000 likes in the first 48 hours (shown below).

Azalea subsequently tweeted at the rapper, asking why he posted the insulting image (shown below). Several of the tweets were subsequently deleted.

RedLetterMedia^[1] is an independent film company and webzone created and run by Mike Stoklasa ^[2] and Jay Bauman ^[3], and based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is best known for producing the Mr. Plinkett movie reviews and Half in the Bag^[4], in which Stoklasa and Bauman review newly released Hollywood films. It also produces the webshows Best of the Worst^[5], in which four people (usually RLM cast and crew members, but occasionally guest stars are featured) watch three B-movies of a certain theme, discuss them, and decide which is the best of them, and Previously Recorded^[6] (styled Pre-Rec), where RLM cast members Jack Packard (aka Harlack) ^[7] and Rich Evans ^[8] review a recently released video game.

History

RedLetterMedia was founded by Mike Stoklasa when he lived in Scottsdale, Arizona in 2004, although it is now based in Milwaukee. It mainly produced low-budget comedic short films until 2008, when, after viewing the Star Trek: The Next Generation movie _Star Trek: Generations ^[9], Stoklasa decided to create a video review of it. Deeming his own voice “too boring”, he decided to play the character of Mr. Plinkett (first portrayed by Rich Evans in short films, and later in Half in the Bag and Feeding Frenzy ) in the video. Encouraged by positive reaction, he continued to make reviews for the other three Next Generation films ^[10].

The company remained unknown until Stoklasa released his fifth Mr. Plinkett review, in which he analysed the often-criticized Star Wars prequel film The Phantom Menace^[11]. The review is notable for stretching approximately 70 minutes and including clips from the film itself, the Phantom Menace development documentary film The Beginning^[12], other films and shows, and live-action segments filmed by Stoklasa. Later, reviews of the other two Star Wars prequel films (Attack of the Clones^[13] and Revenge of the Sith^[14]), James Cameron’s films Avatar^[15] and Titanic^[16], Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull^[17], J. J. Abrams Star Trek^[18], and children’s films Baby’s Day Out^[19] and Cop Dog^[120].

The meme originates from a livestream by former RLM member Garret Gilchrist, wherein he claimed that Mike Stoklasa is a racist, Rich Evans’ parents were addicted to crack cocaine, and Jay Bauman is a rapist (though he later denies saying these things). ^[22]

Koiimo Opening Parodies (Japanese: 恋妹OPパロ) refer to a series of parody videos for the opening credit movie of an adult game Koiimo SWEET-DAYS (恋妹SWEET☆DAYS).^[1] In a similar way to Kishimen, Love Cheat! and Little Busters!, many MAD and hand-drawn animated videos parodying the opening movie have been continually posted to Nico Nico Douga (NND) since 2012.

Origin

The adult video game was released by a Japanese game developper Parasol^[2] on May 25th, 2012. And prior to the game release, its opening movies was published on the several adult game web pages for promotion on April 20th, 2012.

Spread

The opening videos were soon reprinted to YouTube and NND, and its well-made animation caught an attention on there. Then, a famous NNDMAD editor called “the man of pickling a cucumber in panties” (パンツで漬けたきゅうりの人) posted a parody video reproducing the opening movie by the characters from Japanese TV anime/manga Saki^[3] on May 4h, 2012. The creator is known for utilizing bait-and-switch naming style and thumbnail for his works. This video’s title “ah……n…n…Ah…ah…AHH…” (ぁ……んっ…んぁ…あっ…ぁ…あっんっ…) is meaning of moan of pleasure as well. And partly helped by its title, this video’s pageviews had reached 1 million times in October of the following year.

Inspired by this parody video, other MAD editors and amateur animators started making their own versions. And most of subsequent videos’ title and the tag for this video series are fixed to that obscene moaning.^[4]

Besides, the creator of the opening movie Saki Fujimura published the After Effects Project File of the movie on his Twitter on September 26th, 2012. Parody videos in this series uploaded from this point forward are basically made by utilizing this project file.

Surveillance Camera Man is a mysterious YouTube prankster who records video of random strangers in locations around the city of Seattle, Washington without their permission.

Online History

On October 10th, 2012, the photography news blog Pinac^[5] published an article about a YouTube video featuring a man disrupting classrooms by recording students and teachers without their permission. The YouTube video has since been removed. On October 30th, Pinac^[7] published a follow-up piece referring to the prankster as “Surveillance Camera Man.” That day, a Facebook^[6] page titled “Surveillance Camera Man” was launched. May 22nd, 2013, the Surveillance Camera Man YouTube^[1] channel was created, with the first video featuring footage of people expressing frustration for having themselves recorded without their permission (shown below). In the first two years, the video gained over 380,000 views and 1,700 comments.

On June 25th, the Surveillance Camera Man LiveLeak^[2] channel was created, where two additional videos in the series was uploaded that day (shown below).

On July 11th, the /r/SurveillantCameraMan^[3] subreddit was launched for discussions about the video series. On June 17th, 2014, a seventh video was uploaded to the Surveillance Camera Man channel (shown below, left). On October 14th, an eighth installment of the series was uploaded to YouTube, which was subsequently posted on the /r/videos^[4] subreddit. In 24 hours, the video gained over 300,000 views and 3,600 votes (80% upvoted).

Reputation

Premise

The film opens with a grandfather (Peter Falk) reading his sick grandson (Fred Savage) the story of The Princess Bride. The story opens with a young girl, Buttercup (Robin Wright) falling in love with her farm worked Wesley (Cary Elwes). Wesley becomes a sailor to save money for their wedding, but soon after he is captured by pirates and presumed dead. Five years later Prince Humperdink (Chris Sarandon) chooses Buttercup as his bride, though she does not love him. Before the wedding Buttercup is kidnapped by three outlaws Vizzini (Wallace Shawn), Fezzik (André the Giant) and Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin). She is then kidnapped from them by a masked man who turns out to be Wesley, who was captured by pirates but trained to be one instead of being killed. Reunited, the two are found by Prince Humperdink, who promises Buttercup he will not harm Wesley if she returns with him. Instead, he is taken into a torture chamber run by Humperdink’s friend, Count Tyrone Rugen (Christopher Guest), where he is eventually killed. Rugen is also the man who killed Inigo Montoya’s father, and who he as vowed to kill. Teaming up with Fezzik, he brings Wesley to Miracle Max (Billy Crystal), who revives him so they can storm the castle together. Montoya kills Count Rugen, Wesley saves Buttercup and the two ride into the sunset.

The film earned a 8.2 on IMDB^[1] and a rating of 77 on Metacritic.^[2] It was nominated for one Academy Award for Best Music, Original Song. It won a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and a People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Bob appeared as a building contractor specializing in masonry in a stop motion animated programme with his colleague Wendy, various neighbours and friends, and their gang of anthropomorphised work-vehicles and equipment (all made of clay).

The show is broadcast in many countries, but originates from the United Kingdom where Bob is voiced by English actor Neil Morrissey. The show was later created using CGI animation starting with the spin-off series Ready, Steady, Build!^[1]

Bob’s catchphrase is “Can we fix it?”, to which the other characters respond with “Yes we can!” This phrase is also the title of the show’s theme song, which was a million-selling number one hit in the UK.

Reception

Bob the Builder was nominated in the BAFTA“Pre-school animation” category from 1999 to 2009, and won the “Children’s Animation” category in 2003 for the special episode “A Christmas to Remember”^[2]

Director Sarah Ball was interviewed on Gurgle.com about the show’s success in 2010:

“I think diggers and dumpers fascinate kids in the same way that they are drawn to dinosaurs. They both have a timeless appeal. The technique of stop motion is very tangible – the characters look like you can just pick them up and play with them. It’s a safe, lovely, bright, colourful world, which is very appealing. Curtis Jobling did a fantastic job designing the show – it’s very simple and stylized but has such charm.”

Makeover

Overview

In October 2014, Bob the Builder was revamped by Mattel for a new series to be aired on Channel 5’s Milkshake! in 2015. Amongst the changes were a complete overhaul of the cast, with actor Lee Ingleby replacing Neil Morrissey as the voice of Bob, and Joanne Froggatt also confirmed to play as Wendy.

“Viewers will see a big difference on screen as the characters will be computer-generated for the new series rather than created using stop-motion animation.”^[3]

A spokesman for the new series said it would retain “the emotional warmth that has always given Bob the Builder a firm place in the hearts of young viewers”.^[4]

Bob’s original character designer ;Curtis Jobling was asked about how he felt about the remake. He had this to say:
"I was surprised to see the new design.
“My original designs captured children all over the world.”
But he added: “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.”^[5]

Beetlejuice is an American horror comedy film about a young couple who die in a car crash and come back as ghosts, haunting their old house and navigating the afterlife.

History

Beetlejuice was released on March 30th, 1988. The film stars Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as Adam and Barbara, the ghost couple, Winona Ryder as Lydia, the teenager who befriends them when she moves into their old house, and Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse, the afterlife conman. On September 9th, 1989, an animated series of the same name premiered. The show ran for four seasons, concluding on December 6th, 1991.

Premise

Adam and Barbara, a married couple, live in a small town in an old but loved house. One day on their way home from some errands, their car falls into a lake and they both drown. They return to their house as ghosts, only to find a New York City artist (Catherine O’Hara), her husband (Jeffrey Jones) and her step-daughter (Winona Ryder) have moved in and completely remodeled it. At first the couple try to remove the family, seeking the help of their afterlife caseworker and trying to be scary, but eventually they befriend Lydia, and decide they’d rather co-exist. However, in the process of driving them out they strike a deal with Betelgeuse, a man trapped in the underworld who is trying desperately to escape. Though he tries to destroy Adam and Barbara in the process of getting free, they beat him and settle into life as kind of surrogate parents for Lydia.

On August 26th, 2013, the day after Miley Cyrus performed with Robin Thicke at the MTV VMAs, Wet Paint^[6] published an article titled “Who Wore it Better: Robin Thicke or Beetlejuice?” which featured side by side pictures of Robin Thicke at the VMAs and Betelgeuse, which showed they were wearing very similar outfits.

The PSAT, short for Preliminary SAT, is a standardized test administered by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation and taken by millions of American high school sophomores to gauge their level of academic aptitude and prepare themselves for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), the most widely used standardize test for college admissions in the United States. While the test has been administered in the United States every October since 1993, it became a viral discussion topic in October 2014 as students began sharing inside jokes about memorable questions from the test on Twitter and elsewhere in the social media.

Background

Students in the United States took the 2014 PSATs^[1] on October 15th, 2014. The same day redditor NO_USERNAMES_FREE added a thread to the r/teenagers^[2] subreddit titled “Hey guys let’s illegally discuss the PSAT.” Many students added their impression of the test to the thread, asked question about what answers other students got and creating inside jokes around the questions.

Notable Developments

Many high school students used Twitter to discuss and poke fun of the SATs. Within 24 hours of the test being administered the hashtag #PSAT^[3] was tweeted out over 330,000 times. One joke made fun of a question which compared children to dolphins.

Another popular joke involved the extreme stress students are under to both remain seated while taking the test and to perform well.

Also on October 15th, USA Today^[4] published a post which included tweets about the PSATs. The same day the Twitter account PSAT2014^[5] was created. Describing itself as “Recapping the 2014 PSAT. Original Parody Account” the account sent out over 3,000 tweets and gained over 60,000 followers in less than 48 hours.

Gon-san (Japanese: ゴンさん) is a nickname given to an adult form of Gon Freecss^[1], the protagonist boy in a Japanese manga Hunter × Hunter^[2] written by Akihiro Togashi. This muscle monster with glazed look filled with deep despair has been a popular subject for parodies since its shocking arrival in 2010.

Origin

Gon’s adult form showed its silhouette during the battle with a Chimera Ant Neferpitou^[3] in the 305th chapter of this manga, and he fully appeared on the next 306th chapter which was published on Weekly Shōnen Jump released on April 26th, 2010.

The battle with pitou ended in the 307th chapter. However, the readers had to wait over a year to know whatever becomes of after the battle where Gon paid a great cost for win because this manga’s serialization suspended between the following month and August, 2011.

Spread

The sudden appearance of this baby-faced adult having too macho body and ridiculously long hair surprised many manga readers and its very surrealistic lulz immediately made a headline on the web. Then, 2channel or Futaba Channel (2chan) users who thought they can’t call this Gon without an honorific anymore started to call him as “Gon-san” in awe. And numerous photo collages, illustrations, and parody videos for Gon-san soon became to be created on those anonymous boards, pixiv^[4], Nico Nico Seiga^[5] and Nico Nico Douga (NND).^[6] The presence of Gon-san rapidly increased among Japanese internet users throughout sharing those parody creations via many affi-blogs, weblogs summarizing 2channel threads for revenues from EC sites affiliate programs.

2014 Anime & Official Merchandise

4 years later, Gon-san finally appeared on the 131st episode in the anime series aired on May 27th, 2014. At this timing, BANDAI announced the release of a figure of Gon’s adult form on the web site^[9] and the official Twitter account (shown, below). People got surprised at this 430mm figure which more than 70% of the height is occupied by the hair, and soon noticed that the file name of a picture in the page was “GONSAN.jpg” even though the page didn’t mention to the online fame of Gon-san at all.

Shortly after, Twitter users began posting a vast amount of photo collages utilizing pictures of Gon-san figure under the hash tag “Gon-san Crappy Collage Festival” (ゴンさんクソコラ祭り).^[10] This online craze was covered by reddit^[11], and reported by Kotaku.^[12]
