About

Lushsux is a street artist from Melbourne, Australia who is best known for creating large, internet meme-themed murals.

History

In June 2011, the @Lushsux[4] Twitter feed was created, garnering more than 17,900 followers over the next six years. In July 2014, the @Lushsux[3] Instagram feed was launched, where the artist began sharing photographs of his murals painted on the side of trucks. On December 9th, the Lushsux Facebook[2] page was created, which gathered upwards of 36,800 likes within three years. On October 16th, 2015, the first internet meme mural was posted on the feed, featuring Pepe the Frog (shown below, left).[5] On October 29th, Lushsux posted a photograph of a Why the Fuck You Lyin’ mural (shown below, right).[6]

On July 24th, 2016, Lushsux posted a photograph of a mural featuring Hillary Clinton wearing a stars and stripes monokini (shown below, left). That week, Instagram temporarily disabled Lushsux’s account. On July 28th, The Daily Mail[7] published an interview with Lushsux, who speculated that Instagram had censored his feed for posting the mural. On August 1st, the Instagram feed posted an updated version of the Hillary Clinton mural in which she is covered with a burqa (shown below, right). On August 10th, the fashion news site Hypebeast[1] published an interview with Lushsux.

West Bank Mural

In late July, Lushsux painted a mural on Israel’s separation wall in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, Palestine based on an image macro of Donald Trump touching Jerusalem’s Western Wall with the thought bubble “I’m going to build you a brother” (shown below).

2017 HBO Hack

Overview

2017 HBO Hack refers to cyber security breach of the HBO television network servers, in which nefarious cyber actors stole and held for ransom numerous files that included private emails, home addresses and phone numbers of stars, episodes, scripts and information regarding some of the network’s most popular shows.

Background

On July 31st, 2017, Entertainment Weekly[1] reported that there had been a security breach in HBO’s online servers. Hackers obtained 1.5 terabytes of informations, stealing episodes of the series Ballers and Room 104 and a script for an upcoming episode of Game of Thrones, the network’s flagship series. The network released a statement after the breach. It said:

HBO recently experienced a cyber incident, which resulted in the compromise of proprietary information.”We immediately began investigating the incident and are working with law enforcement and outside cybersecurity firms. Data protection is a top priority at HBO, and we take seriously our responsibility to protect the data we hold.”

Development

On the night of July 30th, the hackers claiming responsibility for the breach wrote in an email to reporters:

“Hi to all mankind. The greatest leak of cyber space era is happening. What’s its name? Oh I forget to tell. Its HBO and Game of Thrones……!!!!!! You are lucky to be the first pioneers to witness and download the leak. Enjoy it & spread the words. Whoever spreads well, we will have an interview with him. HBO is falling.”

That night episodes of Ballers and Room 104 were leaked online

Shortly after the breach was confirmed by HBO, HBOCEO Richard Plepler wrote a memo to employees. He said:

“As most of you have probably heard by now, there has been a cyber incident directed at the company which has resulted in some stolen proprietary information, including some of our programming. Any intrusion of this nature is obviously disruptive, unsettling, and disturbing for all of us. I can assure you that senior leadership and our extraordinary technology team, along with outside experts, are working round the clock to protect our collective interests. The efforts across multiple departments have been nothing short of herculean. It is a textbook example of quintessential HBO teamwork. The problem before us is unfortunately all too familiar in the world we now find ourselves a part of. As has been the case with any challenge we have ever faced, I have absolutely no doubt that we will navigate our way through this successfully.”

The following week, on August 7th, the hackers leaked[2] a month’s worth of internal emails from HBO executives and marketing materials regarding Game of Thrones, further escalating the severity of the hack. HBO, however, followed this latest development by stating that their email system “as a whole” had not been compromised.

“HBO believed that further leaks might emerge from this cyber incident when we confirmed it last week. As we said, the forensic review is ongoing. While it has been reported that a number of emails have been made public, the review to date has not given us a reason to believe that our email system as a whole has been compromised.”

The publicly available link also gave people access to internal documents and plot synopsis for an upcoming Game of Thrones episode.[3] Additionally, the hackers emailed Plepler. The email said, “We successfully breached into your huge network. … HBO was one of our difficult targets to deal with but we succeeded (it took about 6 months).”

Mashable obtained a photo of the file systems that were hacked, which included folders entitled "

The company also received a video regarding the demands of the hackers, which Mashable posted.

"Dear Richard Plepler;

I am Mr. Smith and I have the honor to inform you, on behalf of my colleagues, that we successfully breached into your huge network.

We are glad to say that in a complicated cyber operation, infiltration to your network accomplished and we obtained most valuable informations. (1.5 Terabyte)

We confess that HBO was one of our difficult targets to deal with but we succeeded. (It took about 6 months).

By penetrating your Internal Network and other related platforms, we obtained your highly confidential Documents, IT related data, Scripts and etc. these data dump, as you will see, contains HBO’s Various Contracts, Mutual Agreements, Human resources, internal structure, International affiliates, Business strategies, international Marketing, IT infrastructures, producing films & Series (with very detail info!), budget detail for major operations, how you sell and how much!, various strategic insights in every aspects, confidential research, internal letters & Tax Evading Proofs! & Nielsen’s Dirty Job! & etc.

Also, we obtained full scripts and cast list of your (and our) very popular TV series; Game of thrones S7.

You concealed GOT7 very carefully so we can’t find it due to lack of time although we are so close. Instead, we produced some tiny mini-series of GOT 7 for you which be able to shock the entire world!!!

What we got from GOT 7 not only put an end to fate of this season but also corrupts your idea and efforts to season 8.

Don’t hesitate to search, we obtained enormous amount of Full scripts and full length films and series which will be broadcast in upcoming months! We put our logo “HBP Is Falling” on all of them for future possible release !!! We are hackers for accept our apology for amateur mixing!

Now, we have your precious data which costs you millions of dollars: Insecure2, The Deuce S1, Barry S1, Room 104 S1, Ballers S3, Vice Principals S2, Steven Spielberg Documentary, A world in disarray, Tour de Pharmacy, Deffiant Ones and etc.

We noticed that HBO seriously keeps its work products, Inventions, raw materials and etc by various security measures and confidentiality, so it’s obvious for us (and you), by revealing such data what will confront your empire.

Leakage will be your worst nightmare; your competitors will know about your current & future strategies, your inner circle inside HBO& senior staff will be thrown into chaos, your views specially fans became very upset and they blame you rather than us!, downfall in stocks will be predictable and so on. As you are in the business from decades, you yourselves will be full aware of catastrophic consequences …. So make a wise decision!

HBO is pioneering in TV programming worldwide and doesn’t want to lose this situation. More than that, HBO is promoting democracy, women rights, freedom and justice in the world and losing this leadership will be painful and catastrophic.

We are your fans as are many other ordinary people. We know that HBO walked a long way to reach current situation. By Analyzing Vivienne Eisenberg’s profile, we noticed how difficulty way you go to be the first in the market…. Our motives isn’t political nor financial. (Even we hate trump like other Americans do) Its like a game for us, we enjoy to get data. Money isn’t our main purpose.

(my colleagues argue with me about details given to you and length of this letter, but as there will be very few emails between us, I must assure you about what we have, what will be confronting you and what should be paid to settle down everything!!)

We honestly share what we got with you and frankly bring you our demand. We are whitehat hackers and it’s very shameful if you compare us with some noisy & amateur blackhat ones like Darkoverload. You will see in future steps in our operations that we fulfill any promises made and any given word.

We don’t want to endanger HBO’s situation nor causing to lose its reputation. We want to be your partner in a tiny part of HBO’s huge income.

HBO is an important part of Time Warner’s vast array of networks and productions businesses and your estimated annual sale in 662 million dollars in one fiscal year. As all of us know “Very well”, This number is official crap and some-how wrong. By analyzing your financial records, we see billions rather that millions, may be some tax evading proofs, so what? It doesn’t matter, we want only XXXX dollars. In your opinion, is this a greedy number for saving your 1.5 Tb Confidential data from being released?

HBO spends nearly 100 million to produce GOT6 and spends lots of money for series like Insecure, Ballers, The Deuce, Barry, Room 104 and …. . Now we have final scripts and final video files of them. HBO spends 12 million in 2017 for Market Research and 5 million for GOT7 advertisements. So consider us another budget for your advertisements!

Our demand is clear and Non-Negotiable: we want XXXX dollars to stop leaking your Data.

I know (as witnessed in our other operations) that a greedy CEO or an Idiot one who doesn’t understand the new era of cyberspace or a fucking, Full of Pride, FBI fat-ass agent, tells you Don’t pay them, How trust them? What if they release the data even they have been paid? By paying money, you keep them in the circle!

The answer is simple: we are white-Hat. You must trust us. The HBO is our 17th Target. Only 3 of our past targets refused to pay and were punished very badly and 2 of them collapse entirely.

How are you able to stop a group like us that spends about 400-500,000 dollars in a year to buy 0days exploits? We often launch two major operations in a year and our annual income is about 12-15 million dollars. We are serious enough to do our business, the main questions is this: How much is your seriousness to keep your empire on its feet in a NEWBRAVEWORLD?

Don’t call us nasty Hackers, we are IT professionals, consider what is done to you as a huge pentest.

For building mutual trust and confidence, we send you, our entire arsenal! (Except on package for ;last possible Leak which surprises not only you but entire world!). We don’t play with you so, you in return, don’t play with us. You only have 3 days to make decision so decide wisely.

You pay our 6 month salary to bitcoin and we get away form your map. As we witnesses in other cases, Fucking FBI or other police enforcements, teach you couple of outdated trick to play with us and buy time. It doesn’t work with us.

We set a time line for you in 7 weeks of GOT 7 and you pay the money in the way we say. I repeat again, don’t play with us, its only your decades of dignity and heavy efforts that will be played with.

If you pay, both of us will be glad, and every one goes to his work. If NO, then we are still happy, we release the entire collection and set an example of Idiot and old-fashioned collapsing player in the field for our future targets. So you will be the loser and we are still in the field!

You must understand that we are in the new world. You cannot ignore players like us. HBO must adopt itself with new circumstances. Doing so, set you straight forward and Lucky. by ignoring this new era, the first victims will be your reputation and your empire.

There are several disputes between by colleagues about your possible reactions. It’s like betting. Some of them (by analyzing some of your CEO and their attitudes) tell me that you don’t pay. I and some others, being optimistic, will count on your true & wise decision. It’s up to you!

Some final quotes:

First of all declare your surrender! We only communicate with Richard. Send an email and declare it frankly that you accept our terms.

You have 3 days for analyzing the data and the damages it brought and etc. its natural. Forget about 4th date for negotiate. In 4th day, we begin to release….

Do the bitcoin job quick. Some banks in USA have problems in exchanging bitcoin and caused trouble in past. We don’t accept sentences like: we want to pay but banks are lazy and don’t cooperate. Its your problem. Give some bucks, they do like slaves.

Look at below chart every often. It is leakage schedule. We are man of our words. If you like, try us. We release what be declared as written in chart.

We know a lot about your promoting strategies for your series and other stuff. Thanks to your endless efforts in this field, our leakage will be very time consuming and step by step. We will use your communicating ways to spread the content to entire world. For example your huge list of journalists who promote you, will be the ones that spread our words. Nice try like Zoe Barnes in House of Cards! Some of them ambitious and like to go upward so spreads well!

We want a clean operation, if any word got to press or others, then we consider it as breach of contract and despite our chart (step-by-step leakage) we release the entire data at once.

Don’t go to FBI or other fucking IT Idiots. They are so busy or shoe makers! If you have strong enough IT infrastructures, we can’t get your data. In this situation, It’s worthless for begging security from them. We are far enough to catch (Catch me If you can!). This is your empire that is shaking and collapsing. I know that you don’t listen to this advice, its natural. But remember, by confronting any danger, we ignore the chart and release the data at once.

We will write only 1 extra letter for declaring bitcoin transfers. There will be no “Tom & Jerry” game!

There are 2 mottos. Which one is remembered?

Winter is Coming -- HBO is Falling

OR

Winter is Coming -- HBO is standing & Everlasting !

As Architect said in Matrix II: “the problem is choice!”

Hewwo

About

Hewwo is an intentional misspelling of “hello” with a cutesy or babyish connotation. The word grew into slang on Tumblr in 2017 as it began being used with a shitposting connotation.

Origin

“Hewwo” has been used in popular culture as a babyish way of saying “hello” for some time. Meme Documentation[1] traces an early example of “hewwo” to a Vanity Fair[2] article in which a woman is quoted as saying “hewwo, did you weally do Pwivate Benjamin?” (shown below).

The top Urban Dictionary[3] definition of the term, submitted May 26th, 2006, defines it as a variation of “hello” (shown below).

Spread

The word initially was used in engrish memes, particularly those involving Lu Hao (examples shown below).

On Tumblr, the word had been used sparingly over the years with the babyish connotation. Some popular early posts that have used the word include a text post by letshearitforthisclown[4] posted October 26th, 2016, that reads “me at a job interview: don’t fuck up dont fuck up kisses the interviewer straight on the lips for like 3 seconds hewwo” (shown below, top) The post gained over 35,000 notes. A post by the since-deactivated chicksalloverme[5] used the word and gained over 25,000 notes (shown below, bottom).

Tumblr Surge

These were precursors to a larger surge on Tumblr in which “hewwo” became a full fledged meme. In July of 2017, the word began being used in more shitpost-type posts, often met with exasperation (examples shown below). Another popular iteration of the meme includes people walking into scary places and saying “hewwo.” Meme Documentation[1] covered the spread of “Hewwo” on August 8th, 2017.

Don’t Trust Me is a song by American electronic duo 3OH!3. The song became subject to a parody that usually involves animations of characters refusing to help others climb off of cliffs, which ends on a close-up of the character grinning as the song blares in the background.

Origin

The song was initially released in the United States on June 1, 2008 as the first single to their second album Want, where it became quite a hit. The song is best remembered for its silly lyrics and spunky nature. The song’s music video was released in October of that year, currently sitting at over 33 million views.

On April 29, 2010, animator Milizapiainc submitted an animation to her YouTube channel depicting a human female character dangling from the edge of a cliff, where a male character appears and offers her a hand. Gaining her trust, he grabs her, only to throw her off. The video closes in on his grinning face as he lip synchs to the chorus of “Don’t Trust Me”. The video sits at over 3,000 views as of 2017.

Spread

Soon after, more parodies began to appear, typically involving the same subject matter as Milizapiainc’s video, though other, original versions revolving around romance have appeared as well.

A large Inflatable chicken with Donald Trump’s iconic hair found on the Ellipse area by the White House that is open to the public to protest President Trump not sharing his Tax information. [1]

Origin

The large Trump Chicken comes from a man named Taran Singh Brar who purchased it for $1300[2] and had been setting up in protest for President Trump to share his Tax information to prove the Rusian influence, saying “Trump is too chicken to release his tax returns, to stand up to Putin”

The inflatable chicken, which features a golden coif of hair and hand gestures similar to Trump’s, is modeled after a statue unveiled in December as the mascot for a Chinese mall[3]. Since the statue’s unveiling last year, smaller copies have appeared across the United States.

The inflatable chicken that appeared Wednesday appears to have been put up near the Ellipse area by the White House that is open to the public.

Trump was not in the White House when the chicken was placed. Instead, the president is on a 17-day working vacation at his golf resort in Bedminster, N.J.

Rapping Dog refers to Fritz, a dog character in the 2000 Italian animated film Titanic: The Animated Movie. He is well known for his rap “Party Time” in the overseas edit of this movie.

Origin

The scene from the film in question comes in two different edits: the original and overseas version. Both occur after Fritz saves a family of mice from an orange cat in the titular Titanic. The son, named Maxie, says in both versions "If it hadn’t been for you, I would be in someone else’s digestion.’ In the overseas edit, it is here that Fritz starts rapping “Party Time”. In the original version, there is more of a lead-in, where Fritz speaks to the mice to be careful next time before he raps (which sounds different and is slightly shorter, with less reused animation).

The overseas edit was uploaded to YouTube on April 9, 2008, while the original version was uploaded on August 18, 2009. Both respectively sit at over 9,000 and 4,000 views.

Spread

The scene first gained attention when the film was reviewed by the Nostalgia Critic in 2009. He reviewed the overseas edit, causing some hilarious reactions from him, but he completely loses it when Fritz comes into the scene.

It has since been the subject of mockery and parodies, mostly because of the edit’s confusing and abrupt nature.

About

Kale Salad is the online handle of Samir Mezrahi. On Twitter, several accounts, such as Common White Girl or @Dory, will repost viral tweets as their own without giving the original author credit. As Kale Salad, Mezrahi retweets viral tweets from their sources. Since starting on Instagram, Mezrahi has expanded to Twitter, and released a blank song on iTunes designed to make it so that when one plugs their iPhone into a car, a blank song will start playing instead of the first song alphabetically in one’s phone.

History

After working on the social media team at Buzzfeed, Mezrahi is currently the head of social media at animal-content sharing site, The Dodo.[3] The Kale Salad Instagram account[4] was launched on February 12th, 2016. However, Mezrahi’s brand did not start gaining significant attention until the launch of his Twitter account. @KaleSalad[1] was launched in November of 2016, but it was not until December 29th, 2016, that the account posted its first tweet (shown below).

Shortly after Mezrahi started @KaleSalad, he tweeted an update[2] showing he had been blocked on Twitter by @CommonWhiteGirl and fellow meme thief @FreddyAmazin with the caption “This must mean that what we are doing is working.” He was profiled in an interview by Paper Mag[3] on February 7th, 2017. In the interview, he admitted he simply grabbed the name “Kale Salad” when it was “popular a few years ago.” When asked about his process of finding the sources, he said:

There are a few ways, Twitter search is pretty helpful. For videos I can grab the video URL and it sometimes links back to the original source. I follow a decent amount of people and I’ve often already seen the tweets that are being taken so I keep them in a kind of queue. Plus as the account has grown I’ve developed an amazing follower base that’ll send me tweets that’ve been taken.

The @KaleSalad account has also been covered by Memeburn.[5] As of August 10th, 2017, the Kale Salad Instagram[4] account has over 731,000 followers, and the Kale Salad Twitter account[1] has over 90,200 followers.

A a a a Very Good Song

On August 9th, 2017, Mezrahi announced the release of a song called “A a a a Very Good Song” from his personal Twitter account, @Samir.[6] The song is blank, designed to be a fix for the problem of plugging an iPhone into a USB port in a car , which causes the first song listed alphabetically to begin playing. If a user has this track in their library, they will not hear anything. The release of the track was celebrated on Twitter, resulting in a Twitter Moment.[7]

About

Heart-Shaped Boob Challenge refers to a viral photo trend on Chinese social media in which women post selfies of themselves making a heart-shape with their hands over their breasts such that their hand covers their nipple to avoid censorship.

Origin

The trend was started on a live stream by Chinese hostess Ayi Xi Tai Lǜ[1] in July of 2017 in an effort to draw more male followers (shown below).

Spread

After reportedly being spread through Chinese message boards in the month of July, it began trending on Chinese social media site Weibo,[2] where the tag for the challenge has over 23 million followers as of August 10th, 2017. There, users compare the challenge to the A4 Waist challenge, which was a popular trend over a year ago in China in which women placed a piece of paper over their back to show they were skinnier than the width of the paper.

After being covered by WhatsOnWeibo,[1] the trend was reported on by several other outlets including Daily Dot,[3] Shanghaiist,[4] Daily Mail,[5] and more. Some reporters were reminded of the One-Finger Selfie Challenge, a similarly risqué challenge that spread through Chinese social media a few months prior. Some women have observed that the heart-shaped boob challenge can only work for big-breasted women (shown below, left).[6] There are also several pictures of men attempting the challenge as a joke (shown below, right). At the time of writing, though the topic is popular, there are not many pictures of people attempting the challenge.

About

Avocado Toast is a food featuring avocado fruit spread over bread. The term became a popular reference and in-joke for millennials after an article about millionaire Tim Gurner featured a quote from him saying he got rich by saving and not spending money on frivolous things such as avocado toast. Since the article, millennials joke about their poverty by referencing all the avocado toast they have supposedly purchased.

Origin

On May 15th, 2017, Australian website 9news[1] ran an article recapping a 60 Minutes episode in which millionaire property mogul Tim Gurner said “When I was trying to buy my first home, I wasn’t buying smashed avocado for $19 and four coffees at $4 each.” Gurner was attempting to make the point that millennials spend too lavishly to afford a home, while older generations saved money in order to invest in a home. However, the quote about avocado became a subject of derision as it became the focus of dialogue around Gurner’s comments. TIME[2] tweeted an article that claimed Gurner stated “Stop buying avocado toast if you want to buy a home.”

Spread

This understanding of Gurner’s comments led to jokes on Twitter painting the idea as massively out-of-touch with the economy.
