About

Shabbadoobi Remixes refer to a series of musical remixes sampling voices of a transformation belt in the 2012-2013 season Kamen Rider title Kamen Rider Wizard.[1] The belt’s too funky voices were a popular subject for parodies on the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND) in the autumn of 2012.

Origin

The TV program Kamen Rider Wizard was aired from September 2012, and the TV commercial movie for the transforming belt called “Wizardriver”[2] started to be aired in the end of August of that year (shown below). The feature of this rider belt is the “Spell Enchanter” speaker sings many phrases in too funky style when the player is holding transformation or magic rings over the belt. And the most remarkable phrase among them is “Shabba Doobie Touch Henshin!!” (Japanese: シャバドゥビタッチヘーンシーン!!) , a scat like a jazz player in the transformation sequence.

Spread

Shortly after the first episode was aired, these too funky shouts unfitting to morning time TV show for children made a headline among viewers and internet users. In a reflection of the popularity of these phrases, these soon became to a subject for parody remixes on NND as usual. The earliest instance was uploaded on September 3rd[3], and the first hit tune led to a subsequent increase of remixes in this series was an electro house remix posted on September 5th, 2012.

In addition to musical remixes, the transformation sequence was also parodied in the MAD videos style or reenactments by IRL or Miku Miku DanceCGI models. As a result, over 350 videos of the transforming belt parodies had been uploaded to NND in its first month.[4]

Creeparka

About

Creeparka (Japanese: クリーパーカー; Kurīpākā) refers to a hoodie decorated with Creeper, an iconic mob in the video game Minecraft. The hoodie is usually worn by sexy characters in most of illustrations on the Japanese illustrators communities pixiv and Nico Nico Seiga. They are called as moegijinka version of Creeper, “Creeparka-san” (クリーパーカーさん) or “Crepaka-san/chan” (クリパカさん/ちゃん) for short on the Japanese web. She is also dubbed as “Creeper Girl” or “Cupa” on the English-speaking web.

Origin

The idea of Creeparka, a blended word of “Creeper” (クリーパー; Kurīpā) and “Parka” (パーカー; Pākā), comes from the Japanese language that expresses hoodie by a borrowed English word “Parka”. And that Creeparka hoodie was first visualized by a Japanese amatuer illustrator called 221. His illustration named with “Creeparka” was uploaded to pixiv on April 9th, 2011[1] and Nico Nico Seiga on 18th of that month.[2]

Spread

The trigger that led to a substantial increase in popularity of the hoodie was the other illustration. It was drawn by niconico user otomix who is also a popular uploader of "Let’s Play" videos for Minecraft in the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND). That illustration titled “Reeper-chan” (リーパーちゃん) was first appeared on his video posted on July 14th, 2011[3], and then uploaded to Nico Nico Seiga on the following day.[4]

The hoodie finally succeeded to reach to a large audience by the help of his popularity among Minecraft fans on NND. Illustrations for Creeparka began explosively increasing in Japanese illustrators communities Nico Nico Seiga[5] and pixiv.[6] Throughout those following works, Creeparka became to be associated with moe characters, mainly sexy girls wearing only the hoodie. Those characters are usually called “Creeparka-san” or “Crepaka-san/chan” for short. Creeparka-san is also active in dozens of parody videos on NND.[7]

Throughout those fan works and parodies, Creeparka-san has established her Yandere or “Love or Explode” personality. Besides, she is sometimes dubbed “Meister” (匠; Takumi) by linking his/her exploder nature to a specialist of house remodeling.

Creeper Girl / Cupa

Meanwhile, Creeparka had been already exported to the outside of Japan within its birth year, and has been known as a moe character “Creeper Girl”. The amount of Creeper Girl illustrations on the English illustrators community deviantART is more than 1200[8], and those have continued to be posted since the late of 2009. In particular, this sexy hand-drawn animation titled “If Creeper were a girl”[9] was made several translated versions on YouTube and has earned hundreds of thousands of page views.

(NSFW!)

Besides, this moe gijinka idea led the launch of “Mob Talker”[10] in the summer of 2012, that is a Japanese AVG style dating sim MOD featuring moe gijinka characters for mobs. And since the default name of Creeper is “Cupa”, Creeper Girl is also known by the name.

Official Creeparka

The official Creeper zip-up hoodie was released by Jinx in July 2012 (shown below, left).[11] And Creeper hoodie avatar items for X360 were released in September[12] and December[13] of 2012 (shown below, center & right).

However, it seems that there are no relationships between these official goods and the Creeparka meme on the web.

Santa Claus is White

Overview

Santa Claus is White is a statement made by Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly in response to Slate writer Aisha Harris’s op-ed article titled “Santa Claus Should Not Be a White Man Anymore.” Kelly’s remark, which essentially dismissed Harris’s article as a revisionist attempt from the left-wing blogosphere, was subsequently met with punchlines from the late-night pundit circles and criticism of race-baiting.

Background

On December 10th, 2013, Slate[1] published a column by writer Aisha Harris titled “Santa Claus Should Not Be a White Man Anymore,” which argued that Santa Claus should be depicted as a penguin rather than the traditional image of an “old white male.” On the following day, Fox News anchorMegyn Kelly discussed the article on her program The Kelly File, during which she argued vehemently against against the idea of an image makeover for the mythical figure and claimed that both Santa Claus and Jesus were White (shown below).

“For all you kids watching at home, Santa just is white, but this person is just arguing that maybe we should also have a black Santa.”
“But Santa is what he is, and just so you know, we’re just debating this because someone wrote about it.”

Notable Developments

On December 11th, The Daily Show host Jon Stewart criticized Kelly’s assertion that Santa was a white man and pointed out that the historical figure Jesus was of Middle Eastern descent (shown below, left). On the following day, the left-wing political news blog Crooks and Liars[2] published an article about Kelly’s statements, which Redditor BurtonDesque subsequently submitted to the /r/atheism[3] subreddit. In the first five days, the post gained over 3,500 up votes and 890 comments. Also on December 12th, The Young Turks YouTube channel uploaded a video pointing out the Turkish origins of the Santa Claus mythical character (shown below, right).

On December 13th, Kelly addressed her statements about Santa’s race, claiming that it was a tongue-in-cheek comment meant to be a joke (shown below, left). On December 16th, The Daily Show broadcast a follow-up segment, which mocked Kelly’s claim that her statements about Santa’s race was just a joke (shown below, right).

History

Vat19 was founded in 2001 by Jamie Salvatori. Initially established to promote their line of DVD productions, the site gained much popularity, allowing them to leverage their online presence by promoting other products. The first non-DVD product to be advertised was the fireplace-scented candles in 2005. It quickly became popular with Vat19’s fanbase, encouraging the employees to look for other “curiously awesome” products to sell.[1]

Since it began, the company has retailed over 400 different products, and made over 500 videos.[2] In addition to promoting products, they currently have a video newsletter,[3] as well as occasional behind-the-scenes footage.[4]

Miiverse

Miiverse is a social network operated by Nintendo. It is split into communities for certain games, franchises, etc.

History
On June 3, 2012, Miiverse was announced in a Nintendo Direct event.
On November 18, 2012, Miiverse was launched on the Wii U.
A web-based version of Miiverse was opened on April 25, 2013. It is available at http://miiverse.nintendo.net.
On December 9, 2013, Miiverse was made available on the 3DS family.

Bad Miiverse Posts
On May 18, 2013, Daniel Switzer created the Twitter feed @BadMiiversePost. Its title is description of what is tweeted from this feed: “Bad Miiverse Posts”.
Its first tweet was “is there any option to enhance the graphics”, which was posted on a Miiverse community related to the SNES game Super Mario World.
As of December 18, 2013, the feed has over twelve thousand followers.

Criticism over Moderation
The rules on Miiverse are somewhat harsh; for example, you cannot post Friend Codes there (despite people posting them on just about every other related site on the internet). Googling “miiverse ban” shows plenty of results from people who got banned from Miiverse, with the opinion that they were banned unfairly. Also, Googling “miiverse mods” shows a few results of people criticising the moderation on Miiverse. On December 16, 2013, slipstream created a website, VerseCrypt to encrypt messages, with its intended purpose to encrypt things like Friend Codes before posting them on Miiverse so they could “hopefully stay up longer”.

Duck Dynasty Controversy

Overview

Phil Robertson’s Anti-Gay Comment, better known as The Duck Dynasty Controversy, refers to a controversial statement made by the star of the A&E reality TV series Duck Dynasty on the subject of homosexuality in a feature interview with GQ in December 2013.

Background

On December 18th, 2013, GQ Magazine[2] published an interview with Phil Robertson, a cast member of the A&E reality TV series Duck Dynasty and the head of his family-owned hunting supplies business Duck Commander, for the January 2014 print issue. In the interview, Robertson was quoted as stating that homosexuality is a “sin" and condemned gay relationships as unnatural and illogical, citing his devout commitment to the teachings of the Bible.

Out here in these woods, without any cameras around, Phil is free to say what he wants. Maybe a little too free. He’s got lots of thoughts on modern immorality, and there’s no stopping them from rushing out. Like this one:
“It seems like, to me, a vagina--as a man--would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”
What, in your mind, is sinful?

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he says. Then he paraphrases Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers--they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

Notable Developments

Suspension From A&E

On the same day, A&E announced that Robertson had been indefinitely suspended from Duck Dynasty due to the statements made in GQ.

“We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty,” the network said in a statement Wednesday. “His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.”

Robertson’s Rebuttal

Also on December 18th, A&E distributed a statement from Robertson, in which he defended his anti-gay statements as part of his Christian religious faith:

“I myself am a product of the 60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”

A&E Boycott Campaign

Also on December 18th, a Facebook[6] page titled “Boycott A&E Until Phil Robertson Is Put Back On Duck Dynasty” was launched, gathering upwards of 1.5 million likes in the first 48 hours.

“This page is to show support for the freedom of speech of Americans. Unless Phil is reinstated to the show, we refuse to watch the A&E Channel!”

On December 19th, CBS Houston[7] published an article about the Facebook campaign, which quoted the administrator who claimed he had been temporarily banned due to the page gaining 4,500 likes in one hour.

Online Reaction

On December 18th, former Alaskan governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin tweeted about the suspension, claiming that it was an affront to freedom of speech.

On December 19th, several image macros commenting on the controversy reached the front page of /r/AdviceAnimals,[3][4][5] including Captain Hindsight (shown below, left), Everyone Loses Their Minds (shown below, middle) and Actual Advice Mallard (shown below, right).

Also on December 19th, The Daily Show host Jon Stewart mocked Fox News’ coverage of the controversy in comparison to its “War on Christmas” reporting (shown below).

I Will Always Love You MADs

About

“I Will Always Love You” MADs (Japanese: えんだああああああシリーズ, Endaaaaaah Series) is a series of MAD videos consisting of a long long shouting by various persons/characters along with the 1994 Grammy awarded song “I will always love you” by Whitney Houston.[1]

Origin

A song for 1992 movie The Bodyguard[2], “I will always love you”, is one of the representative songs of Whitney. Her impressive long note in the climax part of the song is well known among many people in many countries. Japan is no exception, this song is often dubbed as “Endaaaaaah!” which comes from a phonetic transcription for the line in the climax part “And I (will always love you)”.

Spread

On YouTube, this song occasionally appears in fail videos of people trying to cover Whitney’s long note. A young girl’s freak-out in 2010 is a famous viral video that has earned many million page views. Meanwhile on the Japanese video sharing service, her long note has sometimes utilized as a musical resource for MAD videos of people yelling some short phrase along with it.

The reason why Whitney’s “Endaaaaaah!” goes quite well with those yells is reffered from the Japanese grammar that “da” is one of the terminal forms of adjectives or a copula for assertion or emphasis, and “ta” is also a copula for past form or present perfect form. Therefore, Japanese yells are usually end in “da” or “ta” (eg. How beautiful! → Kirei da!; What the heck are you doing!? → Nani wo Suru n’da!; I did it! → Yatta!).

This style of MAD was originated from an Airmoto video in March 2009[3], and became a fad by a Battle Dome video in the end of 2010.

【ニコニコ動画】【ドラえもんバトルドーム】でぇたああああああああああぁぁぁぁぁぁぁ
Doraemon Battle Dome mo Detaaaaaah!” (Doraemon Battle Some is also in stores now!)

Since that, MAD editors have practiced to cause mild lulz by utilizing Whitney’s long note.[4]
