George Takei Sexual Assault Allegations

Overview

George Takei Sexual Assault Allegations refer to allegations made against actor George Takei that he sexually assaulted model Scott R. Brunton in 1981. Takei denied the claims and claimed that Russian bots were spreading the rumors.

History

On Novemebr 10th, 2017, The Hollywood Reporter[1] published an interview with model Scott R. Brunton in which he stated Takei sexually assaulted him in 1981. Brunton’s account of the night reads:

We have the drink and he asks if I would like another, and I said sure. So, I have the second one, and then all of a sudden, I begin feeling very disoriented and dizzy, and I thought I was going to pass out. I said I need to sit down and he said sit over here and he had the giant yellow beanbag chair. So I sat down in that and leaned my head back and I must have passed out. The next thing I remember I was coming to and he had my pants down around my ankles and he was groping my crotch and trying to get my underwear off and feeling me up at the same time, trying to get his hands down my underwear. I came to and said, ‘What are you doing?!’ I said, ‘I don’t want to do this.’ He goes, ‘You need to relax. I am just trying to make you comfortable. Get comfortable.’ And I said, ‘No. I don’t want to do this.’ And I pushed him off and he said, ‘OK, fine.’ And I said I am going to go and he said, ‘If you feel you must. You’re in no condition to drive.’ I said, ‘I don’t care I want to go.’ So I managed to get my pants up and compose myself and I was just shocked. I walked out and went to my car until I felt well enough to drive home, and that was that."

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed with several of Brunton’s friends that Brunton had told them the story years ago. The two met later and Brunton says he wished to confront Takei about the incident but could not bring himself to do it.

Developments

The morning following the Hollywood Reporter story, Takei denied the allegations in a Facebook post.[2] He stated that the events “simply did not occur,” that he did not remember Brunton, and that those that know him know non-consensual acts are antithetical to his values.

However, comments made by Takei on The Howard Stern Show in October of 2017 seem to indicate Takei had at least done something similar to what Brunton was accusing him of doing. On the show, when asked if Takei had ever grabbed a man’s genitals, Takei said “Some people are kind of skittish, or maybe, um, uh, afraid, and you’re trying to persuade.” The audio (shown below) was uncovered by The Hollywood Reporter on November 11th.[3]

Takei’s Russian Bots Claim

On November 12th, Takei tweeted a chart from SecuringDemocracy.org and alleged that “Russian bots” had been amplifying the story (shown below). Though the tweet has since been deleted, a screenshot was circulated by several Twitter users.

Many on Twitter accused Takei of and harshly criticized him for trying to deflect the allegations by chalking it up to Russian interference. Twitter user @SlimJosa[4] accused Takei of pandering to his #Resistance followers by pushing a Russian conspiracy (shown below, left). Twitter user @surfbordt[5] did the same, gaining 75 retweets and over 500 likes (shown below, right). The claim and the reaction towards it was covered by Uproxx.[6]

Kamau Bell about Apu, specifically the racial implications of the character (shown below, right).[7] He described Apu and voice actor Hank Azaria as “a white guy doing an impression of a white guy making fun of my father.”

In April 2016, a feature-length documentary starring Kondubolue about Apu and the character’s cultural significance was green-lit. The DJ of Kek is likely a shitposter from /pol/. The exact date of his first appearance is unknown due to the lack of video I could get from a Google search, but it is likely to be around January 23rd, as it was shortly after the HWNDU, set it on loop, and let it play for hours until it eventually died and Shia found it the next morning(not shown in that particular video). Though he is only well known for this action, he did this kind of thing multiple times. By looking on http://www.hewillnotdivide.us/ during the time period where the HWNDU project was still hosted at the outside of a museum, though not all the tapes have been saved here, you can see some

He is a close family friend of the Duterte family who is privy to the affairs of the clan. Go describes himself as a “all-around utility man” of Duterte. When Duterte was still Mayor of Davao City, he helped him mostly in processing the requests of sick, dying and financially needy citizens.[1] Go became the aide of Duterte after the latter’s former aide died.[2]

He was brought to national limelight as early as October 2015 when then-Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte filed his certificate of candidacy to run for President in the 2016 Philippine elections. He was involved in making the schedule of Duterte’s electoral campaign. He also spoke on Duterte’s behalf on television at times during the campaign.[1]

Photos of Duterte relayed to the media during the campaign reportedly always included Bong Go which led to editors in newsroom who are tasked to cropped him out of the photos calling him as a “national photobomber”.[1][2]

As Special Assistant to the President

Bong Go remained Rodrigo Duterte’s aide when the latter was elected as President of the Philippines. Go’s post is officially known as “Special Assistant to the President” (SAP) with the rank of Secretary.

31st ASEAN Summit

Bong Go received press coverage when he posted selfies he took with world leaders in attendance at the 31st ASEAN Summit in Manila.[3] The selfies also received coverage from The Washington Post. One of the photos which received more attention was Bong Go’s photo of President Duterte and US President Donald Trump meeting at the summit for the first time. Bong Go’s selfie with Presidents Rodrigo Duterte and Trump later became a meme. The meme involves superimposing Bong Go over a background depicting various subjects.

On the same day the .png file of Bong Go was posted on Reddit, a Facebook Page, named “Photo by SAP Bong Go” was created which is dedicated to the meme.[9] The meme received attention from national media outlets such as Rappler[10]. GMA News[11], the Manila Times[12], and the Philippine Daily Inquirer[13]

GMA News credits the meme to a certain Paul Aguado, a resident of Cainta. He reportedly created the Facebook Page, “Photo by SAP Bong Go” and shared the customized photo frame of Go in Reddit. Aguado said he only became aware of Go when he saw the latter’s ASEAN Summit selfies online and decided to create and share the photo frame for fun. He hasn’t received negative reception from internet trolls nor contacted by the government as of November 15, 2017.[11]

When informed of the meme, Bong Go was surprised but added that he was “humbled” and said he was just “an extra” who doesn’t deserve attention he was receiving.[14]

About

Sean Hannity’s Hillary Clinton Web of Corruption refers to a series of photoshopped images and image macros based on a segment from the Fox News commentary show Hannity, in which host Sean Hannity presented a web of corrupt activities that lead to Hillary Clinton. Online, people mocked Hannity and the image for propagating conspiracy theories.

Origin

On November 14th, 2017, during Sean Hannity’s opening monologue, he introduced the “Hannity big board,” which showcased a map of corruption and conspiracy theories that all lead to former secretary of state Hillary Clinton (shown below).[1] As he described, he used the map to “untangle the giant web of Clinton scandals of corruption.”

Spread

Shortly after Hannity’s segment aired, people online began to compare Hannity to a conspiracy theorist by juxtaposing the segment with other pop culture conspiracy theorists. Many of the examples of parody include references to other It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s infamous Pepe Silvia scene, in which the character Charlie constructs a conspiracy web of yarn and paper. Twitter[2] user @pattymo photoshopped a picture of Charlie over Hannity (shown below, left), receiving more than 2,300 retweets and 9,800 likes in less than 12 hours.

Others compared Hannity to former Fox News correspondent known for his conspiracy webs Glenn Beck (below, left) and The SimpsonsMilhouse using a conspiracy web to uncover a secret leigion of “reverse vampires” (below, right).

Additionally, people captioned the image with various jokes about Hannity. That night, Twitter[3] user @MazMHussain captioned the photo, “The chryon should just say ‘.’” The post (shown below) received more than 70 retweets and 580 likes in 24 hours.
