About

Rolling Series, also known as Rolling with Rolling Girl (Japanese: ローリングガール転がってみた, Rolling Girl Korogatte Mita), refers to a style of hand-drawn animated videos that various kind of characters are literally rolling with a popular Vocaloid song “Rolling Girl”.

Origin

The first instance of this fad was uploaded to Nico Nico Douga (NND) to celebrate the 4th anniversary of Miku Hatsune by a user Gagame (ががめ) on August 31st[1] and September 1st[2] of 2010.

The 1st video (shown left) uses a singing cover. The 2nd one (shown right) uses the original Miku Hatune version.

Spread

Both video were able to reach a large audience partly due to it’s incorporation of Miku Hatsune phenomena. Then, other amatuer illustrators began mimicking the video style by using the audio track with various characters. As of January 2012, the amount of videos in this series on NND is about 200[3] and many of them are uploaded to YouTube.[4]
