Financial Advice Dog is an advice animal image macro series featuring a Golden Retriever wearing glasses seated at a desk with its paw on an open notebook. The captions juxtapose monetary lingo with canine puns, similar to those found in Lawyer Dog images.
Origin
On January 10th, 2013, Redditor jpbarton1 submitted a photo[1] to the Funny subreddit titled “Friend just took this pic of his dog..I think it has potential.” In less than a week, it received 18,555 upvotes and 1712 points overall. Commenters immediately began captioning the image, including Redditor hissing_prig[2] who paired the image with I Should Buy a Boat Cat, likening the dog to the cat’s financial advisor in his purchase.
Spread
A similar joke was made by Redditor fuzzysamurai who submitted the image to /r/AdviceAnimals titled “Financial Advice Dog”[3] the same day. This post gained more than 20,000 upvotes and 1641 points overall within six days. Also on the 10th, the first Financial Advice Dog image was posted to Tumblr via the humor blog Tastefully Offensive.[4] Throughout the next week, compilations of Financial Advice Dog images appeared on FunnyJunk[5], Pleated Jeans[6], the Huffington Post[7], Cheezburger[8], Uproxx[9] and BroBible.[10] As of January 16th, 2013, there are 185 submissions to the Financial Advice Dog Quickmeme[11] page and more than 100 of these were submitted to Reddit.[12]
