Origin
The earliest stance of the meme was on September 17, 2014, when the twitter feed @hittsblunt published the caption: “why do roses run…but feet smell?” followed by a picture of a black male with a hoodie around his head looking confused. The tweet garnered 11,676 retweets and 9,233 favorites in the first 2 months after it was tweeted.

Spread
After the first tweet, multiple similar captions started appearing on twitter. On September 18, 2014, the account danjazown published a compilation of tweets involving the joke onto the site Funnyjunk[1]. The post recieved 1692 upvotes and 521 favorites in the 2 months after it was published. Then, on Septermber 21, 2014, the news site Uproxx[2] on The Smoking Sectio" wrote an article on the tweets writing “It reminds us of that one person we’ve smoked with who will ask the dumbest questions that sound smart as hell when we’re faded.”
