About
Eatcast, short for “eating broadcast” is a South Korean internet slang term for a webcast in which a video blogger livestreams oneself casually eating a meal, usually alone and at a desk. While styles may vary from one vlogger to another, the main draw of these video is to serve as a feast to the eye for the audience.
Origin
The term “Eatcast” (먹방, pronounced “Muck-Bong”), a portmanteau of “eating” (먹는) and “broadcast” (방송) was coined by Korean netizens sometime in early 2012 to praise film actor Jeong Woo Ha’s appetizing performance in scenes wherein he is eating food. On February 7th, 2013, YouTuber Ji-Hye Kim uploaded a supercut-style montage of the actor eating food in various movies:
In the latter half of 2013, however, the term became associated with an emerging trend of vloggers livestreaming while enjoying a feast to themselves on Afreeca TV, a popular South Korean video streaming and vlog community.
