Lyra Plushie is a stuffed toy of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic background pony character Lyra with a mysterious hole in the rear side.
Origin
On May 27th, 2012, a Lyra plushie[1] was placed on the online auction site The Dealers Den by DeviantArt user Hoppip[2]. The Lyra plushie comes with removable clothing and “a special hole in her butt that you can stick your penis in”, according to the seller’s description. The product page also included general tips on how to clean the toy and an option to purchase a slightly different model without the hole. As of June 1st, more than 88 bids have been submitted for the item with the highest bid standing at £351 GBP or $540 USD.
Spread
On May 29th, 2012, Modern Primate posted an article about the plushie and the feedback from the fandom community.[12] On May 31st, Daily Dot[4] published a similar article highlighting the buzz around the Lyra Plushie, followed by a second article[13] on June 1st covering Hoppip’s opinion. Fanart works based on the plushie were also shared on Equestria After Dark[3], Funnyjunk[8] and FunnyField[9][10] on the same day. On Tumblr, tags associated with the item also gained popularity[5][6] and a Tumblr Ask Blog was launched for the plushie, which gained over 650 followers within 12 hours.[7]
Reactions
Although many viewers reacted in disgust and disapproval towards the plushie, others chose to ignore its intended purpose and began sharing jokes about the toy. Hoppip’s DeviantArt page[3] became quickly flooded with various reactions regarding the plushie and a wide range of opinions. On the My Little Pony imageboard Ponychan, the merchandise board[11], /merch/, spawned so many threads about the plushie that the moderators were forced to send out a warning asking everyone to no longer link to the auction page.
Fanart
Most fanart illustrations based on the plushie features the hole in the back with an alternate function other than for the suggested sexual usage, such as turning the plushie into inanimate objects, most commonly a storage container or a hand puppet.
Photoshopped Images
The close up shot of the hole in the back of the plushie, directly taken from the auction page[1], has gained usage in numerous photoshops. These vary between reaction images towards the plushie, to objects and people placed in the hole.
