About

“Throwback Thursday” is a theme day mostly found on social networking sites in which people post an old photo or video of themselves.

Origin

The term “throwback” has been associated with things that are classic or vintage since as early as 2003, when it was first defined on Urban Dictionary.[1] The first Throwback Thursday appeared as a series on animator Saxton Moore’s blog[2] in which he redrew retro cartoon characters. Though the first few in the series have since been removed, the earliest of Moore’s Throwback Thursday posts was made on January 25th, 2006 and featured the characters Henry Cabot Henhaus III and Fred from the late 1960s animated series Super Chicken.

Spread

In July 2006, the sneaker fan blog Nice Kicks launched their own Throwback Thursday series[3], highlighting vintage sneakers. The first post was dedicated to the Nike Air Trainer SCII[4], originally released in 1991. The series continued through June 2012. Also in July 2006, a Throwback Thursday-themed football game was held at Georgia Tech in which players wore 1970s-style uniforms.[5] The phrase began to gain more popularity on blogs in 2011, when it was used to discuss events and objects that were no longer recent on the Ustream blog[6], The Baltimore Sun[7] and American celebrity Nicole Richie’s personal blog.[8]
