About

Lit is a slang term used both in conversation and online as an adjective to describe a party, perhaps with levels of intoxication through drugs and alcohol, or to describe anything exciting.

Origin

The earliest online definition of “Lit” appeared on October 21st, 2002. It was submitted by ralph fff[1] and was defined as “extremely intoxicated.”

Spread

Years later, in 2015, Urban Dictionary user TheGreenAbyss clarified the definition came from the mid-20th century, where it was used to refer to jazz musicians achieving the perfect level of intoxication to play well.[1] In 2016, Merriam-Webster[2] traced the origin back to the 1910s, where the earliest recorded use of the phrase appeared 1918’s War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator, as “We walked into the vamp’s house. We all got lit and had a hell of a time.” Several other definitions of “Lit,” as well as variations on the phrase like “It’s Lit,”[3]“Lit AF,”[4] and “Get Lit,”[5] appear on Urban Dictionary. It has also been defined in articles by Bustle,[6] The Odyssey,[7]USA Today,[8] and others.

On December 1st, 2017, Jake Paul released a Christmas song called “Litmas” that gained over 12 million views (shown below, left). On July 31st, 2017, a song by musician sydnee mcgee called “Lit Right Now” gained 1.2 million views (shown below, right). Both songs were notorious for being cringeworthy.

Other popular songs using “Lit” include the song “Everyday We Lit” by YFN Lucci, which gained over 125 million views. The song “You Know You Lit” by the Dobre Brothers featuring 6ix9ine gained over 18 million views (shown below, right).

Noah's Food Reviews

About

Noah’s Food Reviews (currently Reesey Cups on YouTube) is a YouTuber famous for food reviews. His channel incited concern when it was noticed that he had deleted all of his videos from his YouTube channel. His channel currently has 17K subscribers as of March 11th, 2018.

Origin

The channel Reesey Cups went live on April 25th, 2015. Although the exact upload dates of the videos are unknown, Noah’s first review was on Miracle Whip. He proceeded to upload food reviews from then on, which have since been deleted from his channel, but are still view-able across various channels as reuploads.

Spread

Noah’s Food Reviews became more popular, mainly due to the unhealthy snack foods usually featured in his videos. Parody edits have been created both on YouTube and Instagram. On April 17th, 2016, YouTube user There’s Worse Content Out There posted an edit of Noah’s Miracle Whip review, featuring minor visual editing and distorted audio. Another notable creator of Noah’s Food Reviews edits is Instagram account supreme.hopkins. His first edit was posted on August 14th, 2017, and featured a version of Noah’s Monster Zero Ultra review, with specific phrases made louder or spelled out on the screen phonetically to add comedic emphasis. Since then, supreme.hopkins as well as other Instagram and YouTube platforms have reuploaded Noah’s original videos and created comedic edits intended to parody them.

Disappearance and Controversy

At an unknown date, presumably sometime in 2016, Noah deleted all of his videos from his channel. This prompted many people on YouTube and Instagram, as well as other platforms, to wonder and theorize about Noah’s whereabouts. One noteworthy video, titled “WHATHAPPENED TO NOAH’S FOODREVIEWS? IS HE DEAD?” was uploaded on July 1st, 2017, by YouTuber Troydan Reacts. Within the video, Troydan speculates about Noah’s whereabouts and even theorizes that he may be dead. He asks for his supporters to try and locate Noah, and for Noah to reassure the Internet that he’s safe. Finally, a YouTuber by the name of Fan Boy claimed to have information about Noah’s whereabouts within the Reesey Cups discussion section, stating that he had been placed in an induced coma for about “four months” since the time the comment was posted, and that he has lost approximately 200 pounds or so while comatose. He followed up with a statement sometime in 2017, stating that Noah’s condition was worsening and that his recorded brain functions were slowly decreasing. He also stated that Noah’s doctors were having difficulty keeping toxins out of Noah’s blood, creating difficulty in waking him up from the coma, and that he was Noah’s cousin. However, in September of 2017, a YouTuber by the name of W2PlaysMC responded to this thread, claiming that Noah attended his school, was not comatose, and had deleted his videos due to hate. On Reesey Cups’ channel, a related channel by the name of CallMeAngel is listed. CallMeAngel, while obviously not Noah himself, frequently reuploads Noah’s videos and asks his audience which food review to reupload next. It is unknown why he is listed as a related channel.

Started off as a hit single by El Komander in Mexico. People began making unironic memes about it in Mexico in Spanish. It eventually made its way to the U.S.A. After some time, it evolved into an ironic meme. Most memes that use the song are very abstract and make no sense. One of the most famous variations of this meme is of Patrick Star, from the television series Spongebob Squarepants, dressed up as a cowboy with the text on the picture reading Si Señor Yo Soy De Rancho.

Bruno Mars Cultural Appropriation Allegations

$
0
0

Overview

Bruno Mars Cultural Appropriation Allegations refers to the ongoing debate as to whether recording artist and performer Bruno Mars, who is of Puerto Rican, Filipino and Ashkenazi Jewish descent, is adopting and profiting off the work of African American artists.

Background

Bruno Mars is a recording artist who has frequently be heralded as a champion of funk and even been held responsible for “bringing funk back.” In each of his three full length albums, Mars has showcased a variety of genres, such as doo wop, rap and funk, which have been historically and predominantly performed by African American artists, including Prince and Michael Jackson, who Mars is frequently compared to.

Developments

On June 26th, 2017, ahead of Bruno Mars opening performance at the BET awards, writer Jenn M. Jackson posted a Twitter[1] accusing stating that Mars was appropriation black culture. She writes:

“I really need y’all to stop with this Bruno Mars praise and be more critical about the ways we understand appropriation. Bruno Mars does not identify as Black. Let’s get that clear at the outset. He is a non-Black person of color (POC) who has recently decided that singing Funk music is economically productive. These claims that Bruno Mars is “bringing Funk back” are erasive to Black Funk artists who pioneered the tradition. FUNK. NEVER. LEFT. Yes, he gives “credit” to Funk artists on occasion. He also has a primarily white audience which has no memory or care for Black artists. In Bruno’s case, ‘bringing Funk back’ essentially means, “Funk was a Black thing and now I gave it to white people.” That’s appropriation. I need us to stop relaxing our critical lens to anti-Blackness and appropriation when it is a non-Black POC harming us. The Bruno Mars praise is also patriarchal cause some of y’all were giving Eminem, Justin Timberlake, and Robin Thicke passes too. Stop it. Taking our shit and repackaging it for white people is not innovation. Even if these non-Black ppl sing well, it’s appropriation. Period.

The following week, on July 6th, the website High Snobiety[2] published an article entitled “Is Bruno Mars Guilty of Cultural Appropriation?” In the article, the writer lays out the case against Mars, discussing his racial identity, rumors that he intentionally kept his race ambiguous and how he has used the music of black artists. They write:

“Do his musical stylings and surrounding himself with black talent amount to Bruno utilizing black culture for a come-up, similar to an artist like Iggy Azalea? There’s two sides to the argument: on the one hand, as Bruno said, black people came up with practically every genre of music that is currently popular; from rock, hip-hop and rap to afrobeats and EDM (look up Chicago house music). So if non-black people of color and/or white people can’t partake in these genres, what can they create? Many feel that there’s nothing wrong with non-black artists participating in black culture as long as they respect and pay homage to it, making a distinction between artists like Mars that recognize the influence and the cultural ‘smudgers’ who outright steal from black artists and pass it off as their own work.”

The Grapevine

On March 8th, 2018, the YouTube[3] channel The Grapevine published a video, roundtable debate about whether or not Mars is a cultural appropriator. The debate made arguments on both sides of the divide. Within 24 hours, the video has received more than 27,000 views.

Following the video’s release, people on Twitter commented on the debate, making more points and jokes about the debate. Twitter[4] user @TaraAngel94 tweeted a gif of comedian Jessica Williams and the caption, “Bruno Mars is literally the LEAST problematic musician out here and y’all want to bash him for making Bops that everyone and their grandma can dance to? I mean all that energy can be used for calling out ACTUAL culture vultures but… 😒” The tweet (shown below, left) received more than 2,300 retweets and 5,300 likes in 24 hours.

Twitter[5] user @JaiTheLioness tweeted, “Y’all are just trying to find reasons to hate Bruno Mars.. if he’s not your cup of tea then he’s not your cup of tea but to say that he isn’t talented and appropriates black culture to validate your argument is wack.. just say you don’t like him and move on.” The post (shown below, center) received more than 800 retweets and 1,800 likes in 24 hours.

Additionally, Twitter[6] user @yourRHOleModel tweeted, “All Bruno Mars wanna do is sniff is cocaine, curl his hair, and dance his ass off to old school love songs. Leave that little man alone and go to work.” The tweet (shown below, right) received more than 1,800 retweets and 4,400 likes in 24 hours.

Origion
On march twelfth, twenty eighteen, on the social gaming platform ROBLOX, a user who was only remembered as Anna was playing the game “Auto Rap Battles” when she was picked as one of the next people to do a rap battle. She started off her rap but misspelled the word “get” as “grt”. Shortly after the user Shybull877 started to point out this mistake and five other people began spamming the word “grt”. Coincidently four of the five users where chosen for the next four rap battles, three of them only said the word “grt” and they won their rap battles but the user Shybull877 did not and he lost because of it.

Ussage

The word grt is typically used as a war cry except taken way too far. For example, if you where having an argument that you wanted to win, you would only say grt. Or traditionaly in a rap battle where all you walk say is grt like this “Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt Grt”
The user Shybull877 is also known for using grt like so “grt rekt scrub”,
and by using another word Anna spelt wrong which was know but she spelt it as mnow
like this “Do you mnow the power of grt”

Meaning

Grt is get misspelled,
but it also has a deeper meaning of when you want something so bad all you have to say is grt and you will get it.

Cute Little Fang

$

0

About

Cute Little Fang, also known as the Moe Fang or Tsundere Fang, is a character trait present with, most commonly female, anime and manga characters in which they have a small triangular tooth showing on the edge of their mouth. While the protruding teeth were already a well known trait for certain character types amongst fans of it for decades, it wasn’t until 2017 before it gained more of a memetic status.

Background

Snaggletooth, or Yaeba[1] (八重歯) in Japanese, is the term given to human teeth, especially upper canines, with an uncommonly fang-like appearance. According to the Online Ethymology Dictionary,[2] the term snaggletooth already dates back to the 1580s as a term for “having crooked, projecting teeth”. In 2013, Yaeba became a trend in Japan where teenage girls would undergo dental procedures to have their upper canines capped.[3]

In manga and anime, protruding teeth are most commonly used as a character trait to display mischievousness or being evil, but also as a general feature for the popular catgirls and other types of monster girls. It is unknown when characters first started appearing with the trait, and manga displaying them already predate the 2000s. The fangs come as either one tooth or two teeth and are sometimes drawn as an extension of the lip (also known as the “lip fang”) instead of a tooth.

Spread

A TvTropes page for the “Cute Little Fangs” was created on May 18th, 2013.[7] A subreddit for cute litte fangs, r/cutelittlefangs,[4] was created October 22nd, 2014, and has over 12,500 subscribers as of March 2018. The subreddit also created its own visual reference album by redditor u/andres1232 on Imgur on January 5th, 2015, which displays, as according to the subreddit, the best characters who illustrate the appeal of the cute little fang.[5] The album references various popular anime, including The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Oreimo (shown below, left) and Kill La Kill (shown below, right).

On February 17th, 2017, Youtuber Lost Pause[8] created an video dedicated to the fang character trait, referring to it as “the most important thing”, and explained some of the background on it as well. The video managed to gather over 200,000 views in the following year.

Throughout 2017, the fang gained a more mainstream appeal within anime communities following several anime and games with characters that feature the trait alongside fans that exploited this through images. Arguably the most notable examples of this increase in popularity include Satania from Gabriel Dropout (shown below, left), Astolfo from Fate/Apocrypha (shown below, middle) and Natsuki from Doki Doki Literature Club (shown below, right).

On January 31st, 2018, redditor u/jasimina uploaded an image to r/animemes which featured various cute little fangs alongside the character Guts from the Berserk manga and anime (shown below, top left). The post managed to gather 4,235 points prior to being archived and is the top search result of the board for “fang” as of the same date. The format used by u/jasimina was reused by several other redditors on the board to create their own images using different characters.

Bojler eladó

About

Bojler eladó is a Hungarian phrase, meaning boiler (water heater) for sale. It’s used as a comment by Hungarians when they see a Hungarian reference on a popular international platform like 9gag or reddit, where it’s a rarity that this small country is mentioned. Other Hungarians often hop on the joke, and ask the commenter about the quality of the boiler, its price, etc.

Origins

It is a punchline from a Hungarian joke which can be translated as follows:

Kovács dies. His widow asks the best friend of the family, Szabó, to request an obituary notice but a short one so it would cost less.
Szabó goes to post the obituary notice and dictates the following text: “Kovács died.”
The administrator looks to him surprised: “Is it that short? The price is the same up to 5 words.”
“Alright fine: Kovács died. Boiler for sale.”

The phrase refers to the increasing sales of boilers after hot tap water was introduced to many rural households. Since it was before the Internet, people advertised their boilers on flyers pinned to lamp posts, walls, etc. Given the surplus of boilers for sale, it became a useless addition to advertisements of other things for sale, e.g. “Motorbike for sale (insert detailed description) Btw, boiler for sale as well.”

Spread

When the time of online forums has come, this funny addendum was used at the end of long posts where a lot of topics were covered, as just to add another item to an already long wall of text, for fun. Or as a comment to such long post to joke about its overwhelming amount of text.

Then the phrase was used with the same intention on international forums and other sites, leaving foreign people clueless about its meaning. Now it’s just to confuse non-Hungarians, it is commented below any post mentioning Hungary or something related to it.
