Lyrics

Bruno Mars Cultural Appropriation Allegations

$

Overview

Bruno Mars Cultural Appropriation Allegations refers to the ongoing debate as to whether recording artist and performer Bruno Mars, who is of Puerto Rican and Jewish descent, is adopting and profiting off the work of African American artists.

Background

Bruno Mars is a recording artist who has frequently be heralded as a champion of funk and even been held responsible for “bringing funk back.” In each of his three full length albums, Mars has showcased a variety of genres, such as doo wop, rap and funk, which have been historically and predominantly performed by African American artists, including Prince and Michael Jackson, who Mars is frequently compared to.

Developments

On June 26th, 2017, ahead of Bruno Mars opening performance at the BET awards, writer Jenn M. Jackson posted a Twitter[1] accusing stating that Mars was appropriation black culture. She writes:

“I really need y’all to stop with this Bruno Mars praise and be more critical about the ways we understand appropriation. Bruno Mars does not identify as Black. Let’s get that clear at the outset. He is a non-Black person of color (POC) who has recently decided that singing Funk music is economically productive. These claims that Bruno Mars is “bringing Funk back” are erasive to Black Funk artists who pioneered the tradition. FUNK. NEVER. LEFT. Yes, he gives “credit” to Funk artists on occasion. He also has a primarily white audience which has no memory or care for Black artists. In Bruno’s case, ‘bringing Funk back’ essentially means, “Funk was a Black thing and now I gave it to white people.” That’s appropriation. I need us to stop relaxing our critical lens to anti-Blackness and appropriation when it is a non-Black POC harming us. The Bruno Mars praise is also patriarchal cause some of y’all were giving Eminem, Justin Timberlake, and Robin Thicke passes too. Stop it. Taking our shit and repackaging it for white people is not innovation. Even if these non-Black ppl sing well, it’s appropriation. Period.

The following week, on July 6th, the website High Snobiety[2] published an article entitled “Is Bruno Mars Guilty of Cultural Appropriation?” In the article, the writer lays out the case against Mars, discussing his racial identity, rumors that he intentionally kept his race ambiguous and how he has used the music of black artists. They write:

“Do his musical stylings and surrounding himself with black talent amount to Bruno utilizing black culture for a come-up, similar to an artist like Iggy Azalea? There’s two sides to the argument: on the one hand, as Bruno said, black people came up with practically every genre of music that is currently popular; from rock, hip-hop and rap to afrobeats and EDM (look up Chicago house music). So if non-black people of color and/or white people can’t partake in these genres, what can they create? Many feel that there’s nothing wrong with non-black artists participating in black culture as long as they respect and pay homage to it, making a distinction between artists like Mars that recognize the influence and the cultural ‘smudgers’ who outright steal from black artists and pass it off as their own work.”

The Grapevine

On March 8th, 2018, the YouTube[3] channel The Grapevine published a video, roundtable debate about whether or not Mars is a cultural appropriator. The debate made arguments on both sides of the divide. Within 24 hours, the video has received more than 27,000 views.

Following the video’s release, people on Twitter commented on the debate, making more points and jokes about the debate. Twitter[4] user @TaraAngel94 tweeted a gif of comedian Jessica Williams and the caption, “Bruno Mars is literally the LEAST problematic musician out here and y’all want to bash him for making Bops that everyone and their grandma can dance to? I mean all that energy can be used for calling out ACTUAL culture vultures but… 😒” The tweet (shown below, left) received more than 2,300 retweets and 5,300 likes in 24 hours.

Twitter[5] user @JaiTheLioness tweeted, “Y’all are just trying to find reasons to hate Bruno Mars.. if he’s not your cup of tea then he’s not your cup of tea but to say that he isn’t talented and appropriates black culture to validate your argument is wack.. just say you don’t like him and move on.” The post (shown below, center) received more than 800 retweets and 1,800 likes in 24 hours.

Additionally, Twitter[6] user @yourRHOleModel tweeted, “All Bruno Mars wanna do is sniff is cocaine, curl his hair, and dance his ass off to old school love songs. Leave that little man alone and go to work.” The tweet (shown below, right) received more than 1,800 retweets and 4,400 likes in 24 hours.

Donald Trump Video Games Industry Meeting

Overview

Donald Trump Video Games Industry Meeting refers to a conference United States President Donald Trump had with various lawmakers and video game industry executives about the effects of violence in video games on players. Trump has long been critical of violence in video games, blaming them, in part, for the various mass shootings at American schools, and the meeting was set in the wake of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Background

One of the earliest indications of Donald Trump’s position on video games came following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. On December 17th, Trump tweeted, [1]“Video game violence & glorification must be stopped--it is creating monsters!” The tweet (shown below) received more than 10,000 retweets and 8,500 likes in five years.

Following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Trump began voicing similar concerns about violence in video games. On February 22nd, 2018, Trump said in a meeting about the shooting,[2]“We have to look at the internet because a lot of bad things are happening to young kids and young minds and their minds are being formed,” the president said. “We have to do something about maybe what they’re seeing and how they’re seeing it. And also video games. I’m hearing more and more people say the level of violence on video games is really shaping young people’s thoughts.”

Developments

On March 8th, 2018, President Trump held a meeting with various law makers and video game industry executives about violence in video games. The participants included Senator Marco Rubio, Representative Vicky Hartzler, Take Two Entertainment CEO Strauss Zelnick, L. Brent Bozell III of the Media Research Center, Representative Martha Roby, Lt. Col. David Grossman, President and CEO of the Entertainment Software Association Mike Gallagher, Chairman And CEO of Zenimax Media Robert Altman and Melissa Henson, Mother from the Parents Television Council.[3]

The meeting began with a super cut of violence in video games. That day, the White House uploaded the video (shown below) to YouTube, where it received more than 485,000 views in 24 hours.

According to reports, the video left some in the room shocked. Henson told Rolling Stone,[4]“They started by showing some violent video games and [Trump] was pointing out how violent those scenes were. I think for many of us there, there was a shocked silence. Those from the video game industry were quick to defend [the video games] saying they were meant for a mature audience and that they weren’t intended for kids to see.”

Cultural Appropriation

Bojler eladó

About

Bojler eladó is a Hungarian phrase, meaning boiler (water heater) for sale. It’s used as a comment by Hungarians when they see a Hungarian reference on a popular international platform like 9gag or reddit, where it’s a rarity that this small country is mentioned. Other Hungarians often hop on the joke, and ask the commenter about the quality of the boiler, its price, etc.

Origins

It is a punchline from a Hungarian joke which can be translated as follows:

Kovács dies. His widow asks the best friend of the family, Szabó, to request an obituary notice but a short one so it would cost less.
Szabó goes to post the obituary notice and dictates the following text: “Kovács died.”
The administrator looks to him surprised: “Is it that short? The price is the same up to 5 words.”
“Alright fine: Kovács died. Boiler for sale.”

The phrase refers to the increasing sales of boilers after hot tap water was introduced to many rural households. Since it was before the Internet, people advertised their boilers on flyers pinned to lamp posts, walls, etc. Given the surplus of boilers for sale, it became a useless addition to advertisements of other things for sale, e.g. “Motorbike for sale (insert detailed description) Btw, boiler for sale as well.”

Spread

When the time of online forums has come, this funny addendum was used at the end of long posts where a lot of topics were covered, as just to add another item to an already long wall of text, for fun. Or as a comment to such long post to joke about its overwhelming amount of text.

Then the phrase was used with the same intention on international forums and other sites, leaving foreign people clueless about its meaning. Now it’s just to confuse non-Hungarians, it is commented below any post mentioning Hungary or something related to it.

About

Gru is a character from the movie series Despicable Me created by Illumination Entertainment. In March of 2018, a meme started circulating that showed Gru planning something on a board, only for the third step to be messed up, which results in Gru looking back at the board in confusion.

Origin

This meme originated in early March 2018, though it’s origin is not yet known

Examples

This is the basic type of this meme, you make step 1 and 2 normal, then make the 3rd and 4th boxes messed up so Gru looks back at the board in disgust.

This one messes with the formula. Instead of messing up the 3rd and 4th boxes messed up, it makes them perfectly normal

Here is a blank template (with a small watermark) for those who want to put their own spin on the meme.
