Production

The film was originally planned to be produced in 2013 but because of low budget and also technology, it was delayed until it was officially announced for production in May 2016. According to the director’s press conference in March 2017:

That’s right. Well, since the main characters are the two brothers, where there is Ed, there will always be Al. Even just based on that, the amount of CG used becomes enormous. In this work, I’m using a technology that was used in Hollywood movies such as The Avengers. We’re using a lot new techniques that were never used in Japanese movies before, I would like to boost Japan’s CG level with this movie." Since the original story consists of 27 volumes, I cut it down in to two hours, but we will stay faithful to the manga. I can’t tell you much details yet, but I think that you can guess what will be the main story based from the cast that was already announced. Since I’m a big fan of the original myself, I don’t plan to change the setting, the world view, and make a different story, so please don’t worry about that. Of course we will have the philosopher’s stone coming out [somewhere in the story].

Development

On adapting the source material, Fumihiko Sori said, “I want to create a style that follows the original manga as much as possible. The cast is entirely Japanese, but the cultural background is Europe. However, it’s a style that doesn’t represent a specific race or country.” Regarding the faithfulness of the adaptation, which has characters of non-Japanese ethnicity, the director said, “There will never be a scene in which a character says something that would identify him/her as Japanese.”

Sori told Oricon he has a deep affection for the story that tells the “truth of living,” and said, “It is my dearest wish to turn this wonderful story into a film, and it is not an exaggeration to say that I am living for this reason.” He added that he “wants to create a wonderful film that uses techniques that challenge Hollywood,” and noted that nowadays Japanese filmmaking techniques have progressed greatly. It was announced that the film will make its Western debut on February 19 as a Netflix original.

Fergie's National Anthem

Overview

Fergie’s National Anthem refers to a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by pop singer Fergie at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game that was widely criticized and mocked for the singer’s bizarre interpretation of the song.

Background

On February 18th, 2018, before the 2018 NBA All-Star Game at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, pop singer Fergie sang the American National Anthem. The arrangement of the piece and the singer’s vocal performance were subject of criticism and mockery afterwards.

Developments

During the performance, the camera cut to several NBA players struggling not to laugh. Twitter user and sports journalist Paige Dimakos tweeted a compilation of crowd and player reactions to the performance, with many NBA players and celebrities appearing stunned or attempting to stifle laughter (shown below).

During the halftime show of the game, commentator and former player Charles Barkley joked about the performance, saying he needed a cigarette afterwards.[1]Shaquille O’Neal, who was also on commentary for TNT, attempted to stifle jokes about the performance by saying “Fergie, I love you. It was different. It was sexy. I liked it. Leave her alone.”

Social media users immediately joked about the performance. Sportswriter Jemele Hill pointed to NBA player Draymond Green’s reaction, saying, “Draymond Green is all of us,” gaining 13,000 retweets and over 29,000 likes (shown below, left). NBA meme account @NBABeLike tweeted an image of Warriors player Klay Thompson with his ear bleeding, gaining 3,200 retweets and 9,500 likes (shown below, right).

News publications harshly criticized Fergie’s performance. Deadspin[2] wrote of the performance in a piece titled “Words Cannot Begin To Describe The Horror Of Fergie’s All-Star Game National Anthem.” Rolling Stone[3] called the performance “disastrous.” Forbes[4] called it “terrible.” Deadspin[5] obtained footage of Fergie rehearsing the piece beforehand, where she appears unsure about the arrangement. To TMZ,[6] Fergie apologized, saying she attempted to take an artistic risk but her performance “clearly didn’t strike the right tone.”

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

About

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an action role-playing game released for Microsoft Windows, Playstation 4 and Xbox One. It was directed by Daniel Vávra, developed by Warhorse Studio and published by Deep Silver. Though the game was generally favorably reviewed upon release, it was criticized for an abundance of bugs which were patched after release.

History

The game was an original idea by Daniel Vávra in 2009.[1] After searching for investors for two years, a private investor funded a prototype of the game, leading to the creation of Warhorse Studios in 2011. After developing the prototype, the team failed to find international investors, leading them to take to Kickstarter on January 22nd, 2014 with the effort of generating 10% of their budget to prove their game had an audience. The Kickstarter gained 1.1 million Euro, over 800,00 Euro over their goal. On October 1st, 2014, Vávra announced the game had raised over $2 million. A beta version was released in March of 2015 for those who’d backed the Kickstarter. A trailer for the game was released on June 17th of that year (shown below, left). The final trailer for the game was released on February 1st, 2018 (shown below, right).

The game was released on February 13th, 2018. The game topped the Steam best-seller list on the day of release, and reportedly sold over 500,000 copies in its first two days. Many players noticed an abundance of bugs in the game, and a day-one patch of the game was 23 GB large.[3] Some players did not receive the patches, leading to confusion as to what the most recent version of the game was. Warhorse Studios clarified the patches in a lengthy Reddit post.[4]

Reception

The game was fairly well-received by critics, scoring a 75/100 on Metacritic.[2] Critics praised the game’s ambition, comparing it to a hardcore version of an Elder Scrolls. However, many critics noted an abundance of bugs that hampered the playing experience.

Online Presence

Kingdom Come: Deliverance has developed a solid online presence. A subreddit for the game has gained over 31,000 readers.[5] The game also has 78,000 likes on Facebook. [6] On February 19th, 2018, Deep Silver tweeted a review of the game from Steam which underlined how difficult the game was, gaining 860 retweets and 3,400 likes (shown below).

About

Interview Possum refers to a photograph of Sand Mountain Sam, an opossum who serves a similar role to Sand Mountain, Alabama, as Punxsutawney Phil does to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and much of the United States in that it can supposedly predict the weather. The image comes from the ceremony for Sand Mountain Sam’s 2018 “prediction” for the remainder of winter and spread through Twitter as people added various captions to it.

Origin

Like Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog who serves as the basis for Groundhog Day, Sand Mountain Sam is an animal associated with a superstition that if it sees his shadow on a certain day in February, it means six more weeks of winter in the Tennessee Valley area. At the 2018 ceremony for Sand Mountain Sam held February 2nd, 2018, Sam did not see his shadow, meaning an early spring in the area.[1]

About

Wakanda Isn’t Real refers to a series of jokes and responses to the popularity of the Marvel superhero film Black Panther. Online, some people have taken issue with the popularity of the film and the fictional country of Wakanda, where the film is set, and respond to these complaints with the phrase “Wakanda isn’t real.” However, the phrase has also been used to mock that response and perceived hyperbolic response to a fantasy location.

Origin

On February 9th, 2018, conservative commentator Ben Shapiro responded to an editorial in the New York Times about Wakanda, the fictional country in the film Black Panther, on Twitter.[1] The purpose of the piece is to discuss the meaning of Wakanda in the context of art and society as it is a fictional African nation that has not been colonized. Ben Shapiro’s responded to the article, “Wakanda isn’t real.” The post (shown below) received more than 3,400 retweets and 13,000 likes.

Four days later, Ben Shapiro discussed Black Panther on his show, The Ben Shapiro Show.[2] In the show, he discussed the interpretations and meanings of Wakanda in the context of the comic book and film. Specifically, Shapiro takes offense to Wakanda being a utopian symbol for an African country without colonization. During the show, he says, “Sorry to break it to you, folks, but Wakanda is not a real place.” Since being uploaded to YouTube, the video (shown below) has been viewed more than 260,000 times.

Following Shapiro’s rant, other conservative commentators joined Shapiro in responding to cultural and literary analysis of Wakanda with “Wakanda isn’t real.” On February 14th, Daily Caller journalist Ian Miles Cheong retweeted[3] a piece from National Public Radio about the influnences for Wakana and responded with “Wakanda isn’t real, people.” The post (shown below, left) recevied more than 60 retweets and 360 likes in seven days.

On February 16th, the Hollywood Palms Cinema posted[4] an apology to people who complained about their Black Panther posts. The apology made a joke of the outrage against the country and its technology. The post (shown below, center) received more than 5,900 retweets and 14,000 likes in five days.

Others, however, mocked Shapiro’s rant against the fictional country. On February 18th, Twitter[5] user @KrangTNelson tweeted, “FOZZYBEAR: hey hey, Waka Wak- / BENSHAPIRO (pounding on the door): WAKANDA ISN’T REAL.” The post (shown below, center) received more than 1,100 retweets and 8,300 likes in three days.
