Origin

The tradition of a couple dressing up in matching costumes for Halloween has long been a staple of the holiday. Suggestions for couples’ costumes have long appeared online; a page of couples’ costumes merchandise appeared on Candy Apple Costumes^[1] in 2006 (example shown below).

Parodies of the ideas began appearing with regularity on Twitter in the Halloween season of 2014. For example, on September 28th, 2014, Twitter user @BBW_BFF^[2] posted a picture of a monster eating a person captioned “couples costume idea” (shown below).

Spread

Parodies began appearing regularly online each Halloween season over the course of the following two years. However, while jokes appeared during those years, in the 2017 Halloween season, the jokes spiked in popularity. A major trend during the season involved making “couples costume idea” jokes with stills from popular Vine videos. One of the most popular tweets, posted by @abbynotabigail_,^[3] referenced a popular “So No Head” Vine^[4] and gained over 25,000 retweets (shown below). Twitter Moments^[5] and Daily Dot^[6] covered the spread of Vine-related jokes.

Meanwhile, Twitter users used other humorous duos in the tweets, similar to the Name a More Iconic Duo tweet series (examples shown below).

CNN’s #FactsFirst Ad refers to a viral advertisement by CNN in which a narrator informs the viewer they are looking at an apple regardless of whether or not someone attempts to convince them it is a banana.

Origin

On October 23rd, 2017, the @CNN Twitter feed tweeted the video along with the message “‘Some people might try to tell you that it’s a banana.’ #FactsFirst” (shown below). Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 48,800 likes and 24,400 retweets.

“This is an apple, Some people might try to tell you that it’s a banana. They might scream, ‘banana, banana, banana,’ over and over and over again. They might put BANANA in all caps. You might even start to believe that this is a banana. But it’s not. This is an apple.”

Shortly after the ad was published, Twitter user @LeonHWolf tweeted “Ooh! Ooh! Now do ‘man’ and ‘woman’,” garnering more than 9,800 likes and 3,300 retweets over the next day (shown below).

That day, several posts mocking the ad reached the front page of /r/The_Donald. Also on October 23rd, Twitter user @grozadarius posted a remix of the ad featuring a picture of a banana (shown below).

On October 24th, the @BuzzFeedNews Twitter feed tweeted a banana joke video created in a similar style to the #FactsFirst ad to @CNN (shown below).

TwitchCon is a convention devoted to Twitch and video game streaming
culture held annually in California every fall since 2015.

Background

The first Twitchcon opened on September 25th, 2015 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.^[1] It featured CEO Emmett Shear as the keynote speaker and Darude as a performer at the afterparty.

Developments

The following year, the con extended to another day and took place at the San Diego Convention Center. It was attended by 35,000 people. The following year, it moved to the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center and was held from October 20-22nd. This year, it was covered by Kotaku, who wrote several articles^[3][2] covering drama and controversies from the event. For example, several people at the convention were streaming their experiences on Twitch, which was not appreciated by people at the con who did not wish to be filmed.^[2]

Additionally, Kotaku^[3] and Mashable^[4] covered a giant portrait of artist Bob Ross made of beads created by streamer Edward Flabberjackson (shown below).

Agent Hitler, FBI refers to a series of reaction images and image macros featuring a screenshot from the Australian comedy television series Danger 5 in which the character Adolf Hitler holds up a badge and says, “Agent Hitler, FBI.”

Origin

On January 11th, 2015, the second episode of the second season of the comedy television series Danger 5 aired on SBS.^[1] In the episode, Hitler, the series antagonist played by Carmine Russo,^[11] poses as an FBI agent to evade the authorities and blame a disaster on the show’s heroes (shown below)

Spread

Two days later, on January 13th, 2015, a gif of the moment appeared on Imgur, ^[3] where it received more than 1,000 views. A still image of the moment appeared on the site^[4] again the following year, on April 26th, 2016, received more than 900 points and 800 views.

On February 2nd, 2015, an anonymous 4chan^[5] user posted the image in a thread about disguises on the /tg/ board. They captioned the post (shown below) “This is how I roll disguise.” The image has been seen as a reaction image on other 4chan boards, such as /pol/^[9] and /v/^[10]

The following year, on September 29th, 2016, the Facebook account worldmemedatabase ^[6] posted the image, receiving more than 90 reactions and 15 shares in one year.

Less than a year later, on August 7th, 2017, Twitter^[7] user @CJM156156 tweeted the image with the caption “>When you’re doing an evil playthrough of an RPG but the main quest railroads you into being good.” The post (shown below) received more than 3,400 retweets and 7,400 likes 14 months.

Several months later, Redditor^[8] StupidDizzyMedicine shared the image on the /r/dankmemes subreddit, where it received more than 29,000 points (95% upvoted) and 400 comments/

Illustrations of brainlets are often depicted as the character “Wojack” with an incredibly small head, as opposed to “tfw too intelligent” drawings.

The earliest archived use of the term “brainlet” on 4chan was submitted to the /sci/ (Science & Math) board on December 1st, 2015 in a post asking “When will science finally find a cute for low IQ? I don’t want to be a brainlet anymore” (shown below).^[6]

On September 18th, 2016, a thread asking “what’s with the ‘brainlet’ meme these days?” was submitted to the /sci/ board.^[2] On October 29th, an anonymous 4chan user submitted a post asking “What is /sci/ official definition of brainlet?” to /sci/.^[3] On May 11th, 2017, Urban Dictionary^[1] user TinFoilHatGuy submitted an entry for “brainlet,” defining it an “immature, underdeveloped cerebral cortex.”

On June 4th, a “Brainlet Safe Thread” was posted to /sci/ along with a picture of Wojak with a microscopic brain (shown below, left).^[5] On July 2nd, a picture of Wojak with an atrophied head was submitted to the /biz/ (Business & Finance) board in a thread titled “/brainlet/” (shown below).

On October 18th, an anonymous 4chan user submitted a post to “/r9k/” with the “green text”: “>think for your whole life that you are intelligent / >you are actually a brainlet” (shown below). That day, a screenshot of the post was submitted to /r/4chan,^[4] where it gathered more than 800 points (96% upvoted) within one week.

Xbox Kinect is a device for Xbox consoles outfitted with a webcam-style camera which allows players to play games using their bodies as the controller. While the Kinect powered some viral art pieces on YouTube, in gaming, the device was notorious for technical limitations, which led to several popular YouTube videos in which people attempted to play Kinect games with frustrating results. The device was discontinued in October of 2017.

History

The Kinect was first announced at E3 2009 under the name “Project Natal.”^[1] It was released in North America on November 4th, 2010 for the Xbox 360. It was initially well-received by critics for its appeal to casual gamers, as well as voice-command technology that predated functions like Siri and Amazon Echo. Still, critics noted its hefty price tag of $149.99 and spatial requirements were knocks against it. Launch games for the Kinect focused on the active potential of the gadget, including games such as The Biggest Loser: Ultimate Workout, Dance Central, Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports (trailer shown below), and more.^[2] Kinect won T3’s “Gadget of the Year” prize in 2011.

Developments

Kinect was made compatible with Microsoft Windows in February of 2012. Kinect 2.0 was released with the Xbox One on November 22nd, 2013, and the Xbox One initially required Kinect usage. The 2.0 Kinect included facial recognition and voice commands, which some reviewers called a “creepy” experience. Users voiced privacy concerns about the Kinect’s features as well, as users noted that the Kinect’s facial recognition and voice commands could be used for surveillance. Eventually, Microsoft reversed their decision to require Kinect usage with the Xbox One.

In gaming, the Kinect often frustrated players with its inconsistent body recognition and limited gameplay. For example, On October 2nd, 2011, Super Best Friends Play uploaded a video of themselves playing Rise of Nightmares, a horror game Kinect game for the Xbox 360, and experienced frustration with the controls. The video gained over 1.1 million views (shown below, left). In one of his more popular reviews, uploaded May 1st, 2012, Jontron reviewed Star Wars Kinect (shown below). The review gained over 7.4 million views in five years (shown below, right) and features a memorable clip of the game where the Star Wars character Han Solo dances to an electronic pop song.

In September of 2015, Microsoft released an advertisement for the Kinect showcasing its artistic potential, using dance captured by the Kinect motion-captured to create visual art (shown below).

On October 25th, 2017, Microsoft told Fastcodesign^[3] that they would cease the production of the Kinect.

The tweet (shown below, left) received more than 2,500 retweets and 5,200 likes in one year. On October 17th, Barstool Sports^[5] published an article on the reaction to the tweets.

The following year, on September 5th, she shared the DMs from Willson Contrereas, professional baseball player for the Chicago Cubs. She captioned the tweet,^[6]“Cubbies, your man’s is wandering around left field. Can you come get him? @Cubs” The post (shown below, right) received ore than 11,000 retweets and 31,000 likes in less than two months. That day, Deadspin^[7] published an article about Contreras’ DMs.

On October 24th, 2017, Khalifa tweeted at JuJu Smith-Schuster, a Pittsburg Steelers received, who had his bike stolen that week. She said, “You are my new favorite follow on twitter 😭 @TeamJuJu #TeamFindJujusBike” The tweet (shown below, left) received more than 480 retweets and 2,000 likes in 24 hours.

That day, Smith-Schuester responded on Twitter,^[8] Oh hell nah, I’m not fallin for this lol. I’m young not stupid 😂😂😂" The post (shown below, right) received more than 70,000 retweets and 174,000 likes in less than two days.

Death Threats

The sudden publicity of being one of the world’s most popular porn stars caused some in the Muslim community to criticize her for wearing a hijab in her scenes. On January 3rd, 2015, the Lebanese news site Lebanese Examiner^[2] reported that Beirut-based newspapers had written articles criticizing Khalifa for wearing a hijab during sex scenes, leading Khalifa to tweet^[4]“Doesn’t the Middle East have more important things to worry about?” (shown below). In one week, the tweet garnered more than 1,200 retweets and 1,000 favorites.

Over the next week, Khalifa was the subject of various death threats on Twitter. In most cases, these threats included references to terror caused by groups such as ISIS (examples below).

Gohan Blanco refers to a series of references regarding the transformation of the Dragon Ball character Gohan into Super Saiyan White.

Origin

On April 30th, 2017, the character Gohan unlocked his most potential in episode 88 of the anime television series Dragon Ball Super. The moment is considered by some fans as a highly anticipated one, considering the character has only transformed into “mystic Gohan,” as fans call him twice before. When Gohan transforms, his hair turns white.

Spread

On September 12th, 2017, Dragon Ball Wiki^[2] user 4Channer Weeb launched a page for Super Saiyan Gohan or “Godhan.” The post is categorized as a shitpost.

Throughout September and October, numerous threads and references to Gohan Blanco were made by anonmyous 4chan users, particularly in the /a/ anime forum.^[6][7][8] On September 27th, an anonmyous 4chan^[7] user posted a parody power ranking of Dragon Ball characters, placing Gohan Blanco at the top.

On October 10th, YouTuber^[6] suprememe posted a video entitied “Blanco Gohan (Super Saiyan White) Full Theme – Dragon Ball Super.” The video (shown below) contains various piece of Gohan Blanco content, including the multi-panel comic that many others reference. Within three weeks, the video has received more than 2,000 views.

On October 11th, an anonymous Imgur^[3] user posted a multiple-panel webcomic of Gohan’s transformation in Spanish. In the last panel, he says the character unofficial catchphrase, “Esto es el fin, Grande Padre.” The comic is frequently referenced in conversation about Gohan Blanco, particularly the final line. The following week, on October 18th, Game FAQ^[4] user DontDieNintendo used the comic as an explanation for the meme.

On October 13th, Naruto Forums^[5] user XImpossibruX posted “Who the hell is Gohan Blanco? Is this a Mexican Meme?” Another user, HoroHoro responded by saying:

“Gohan Blanco is the savior, the hope and the hero of justice who will defeat Jiren the GREAT. It is his true destiny to not only transcend Goku, but to transcend all of Dragon Ball itself, and to live among the Gods. Goku uses GoD power, but Gohan uses Angelic powers. After he defeats El Grande Padre by using the power of the Angels, his divine light will shine on all the victims of El Grande Padre’s evil. Gohan is the light that cries out in the darkness, the true loyal, lawful, and good. :hiddles

Gohan shall transcend the limits of a Saiyan and has spoken to the hearts of all the suffering, letting them know it’s ok, because Gohan is always on our side. He is kind not only to his allies, but even to his enemies.
