  • 06/30/17--11:36: The Darkest Timeline
  • About

The Darkest Timeline is a reference to the multi-verse theory which hypothesizes that there are multiple universes outside of our own in which all things are possible, and that we live in the worst possible of these universes. After the phrase was popularized by an episode of Community, it became a popular reference online to discuss confusion at current events, although it has also been used as a snowclone to express different opinions at current events (i.e. “The Best Timeline,” “The Strangest Timeline,” etc.).

    Origin

The multi-verse theory was first posited by Erwin Schrödinger[1] in 1952 in Dublin, Ireland, when he said his Nobel equations seemed to describe several different histories that were “not alternatives, but all really (happening) simultaneously.”

On October 13th, 2011, the Community episode “Remedial Chaos Theory” aired.[2] In the episode, the character Jeff Winger rolls a six-sided die to determine which character will pick up a pizza order. The character Abed warns Jeff, “You are now creating six different timelines.” The episode then shows what happens when each character picks up the pizza in a series of vignettes. In the character Troy’s vignette, Troy leaves to get the pizza and a series of incredibly unfortunate events occurs, resulting in one character getting shot and the apartment lighting on fire (shown below, left). The episode ends with Jeff picking up the pizza and things returning to normal, but during the episode’s credits, we see what the group’s life is like in the future after Troy picks up the pizza, which Abed coins “The Darkest Timeline” (shown below, right). The show continued to reference “The Darkest Timeline” through the remainder of its run.

    Spread

After the airing of the episode, the phrase “Darkest Timeline” began seeing use by fans and soon spread into other communities. On May 12th, 2012, Thought Catalog[4] published a post engaging with the multiverse theory in regards to a breakup, saying that the breakup was “The Darkest Timeline.” On November 19th, 2012, Redditor PunsAreFun[3] published a PokémonROM hack titled “New Rom Hack! Pokemon TDT (The Darkest Timeline)” in which the player plays as a Team Rocket Grunt. The user confirmed that the title was a reference to the Community episode in the ensuing thread.

“__People like you disgust me, actually there is nobody quite as repulsive as you are. In fact you are such a worthless piece of literal shit that no human being with any sort of intelligence, unlike your non-functioning brain that works as well as an 87-year-old downsyndrome mongoloid parapalegic retard, would ever accept you as a person let alone want to reproduce with you. Face it, faggot, nobody wants your awful traits in their gene pool.__"

  • 06/30/17--19:56: Shaxx is Shrek
  • There is a Steam Community user by the name of “Shaxx”. (http://steamcommunity.com/id/Shax-Leone/) One of his other friends started saying to him “Shaxx is love Shaxx is life.” Later the friend started calling him “Mighty Ogrelord Shaxx.” One day, the friend was in a Steam group chat with Shaxx. In the chat, his friend made a parody of “Shrek is love Shrek is life” but with Shaxx instead of Shrek. So after that, his friend started calling Shaxx “Shrek” as a nickname. Then later on other people of the Steam community followed the meme and started calling him Shrek. The song “Smash Mouth All-Star” is nicknamed “Shaxx’s theme song” on the Steam community.

  • 07/03/17--07:41: Chris Christie Beach Picture
  • About

Chris Christie Beach Picture refers to a photograph of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie sitting on an empty beach at the Governor’s mansion, during a Christie-ordered government shutdown that shut down state beaches all weekend. The picture sparked intense criticism of Christie, his policies and attitude, inspiring a photoshop battle of Christie on the beach.

    Origin

On June 30th, 2017, Governor Chris Christie signed an executive order, declaring a state of emergency because the state of New Jersey failed to pass the state budget before the constitutional deadline, and effectively shutting down the government.[1] The shut down -- the second in NJ history -- closed various state services, such as motor vehicle services, courts, taxation offices, disability and family leave, travel centers and state parks and beaches, among other things.

On July 2nd, two days into the shutdown, the Star Ledger, New Jersey’s largest newspaper, published photographs of Governor Christie and his family enjoying Island Beach State Park (shown below), one of the beaches closed in the shut down for the July 4th holiday weekend.

    About

Donald Trump’s Hollywood Star refers to a series of memes and controversies surrounding President Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, particularly a photo fad inspired by one Trump supporter’s tweet about cleaning graffiti off the star.

    Origin

On June 28th, 2017, Twitter user @makenna_mg posted a picture of herself cleaning up President Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which had been covered in stickers and graffiti. Nothing but respect for MY President. #RaisedRight” Within five days, the post (shown below) received more than 55,000 retweets 208,000 likes.[1]

    Precursor

Since installed on January 16th, 2007, Trump’s star has been subject to numerous acts of vandalism. On July 22nd, 2016, the street artist Plastic Jesus[5] constructed a small wall around the star (shown below, left) in reference to Trump’s Mexican border wall.. On October 26th, James Lambert Otis destroyed Trump’s star with a pickaxe. He has been charged with vandalism (shown below, right).[4]

Shortly after the post went viral, a now private Twitter account posted parody of the picture in which a woman stands over the star, which has been covered in stickers, and raising her middle fingers. She captioned the post (shown below) “@ the girl who cleaned trumps star.”

On June 30th, the Twitter account @polNewsForever[3] posted the two pictures side-by-side with the caption “Your choice: -wholesome White girl cleaning a public place OR -vulgar Hispanic girl spreading graffiti.” The tweet (shown below, left) received more than 5,300 retweets and 18,000 likes. Another Twitter user @lexi4prez retweeted @polNewsForever’s tweet, adding the caption “rt for the lit hispanic girl.” This follow up tweet (shown below, right) received more than 170,000 retweets and 130,000 likes.

  • 07/03/17--13:57: Ban Violent Games
  • “Ban Violent Games” was a satirical thread created on the ROBLOX forums by user national_security, starting as a simple bait thread, although later exploding to 340 pages and 8,495 replies before getting locked by the site moderators, and has reached a current total of over 19,000 views.

    Hello ROBLOX,

Recently, I caught my 8 year old son playing a violent game on ROBLOX. I took the computer from him immediately and put him on a time-out. Meanwhile, I came to the horrifying discovery that, while the game he was playing was called “Phantom Forces”, there were countless other violent games that I just was disgusted to see on a kids website. I have decided to make sure my son never plays ROBLOX again until these games are banned and I am encouraging other moms to do the same.

This thread created and continues to create hundreds of spinoffs, including the following:

  • 07/04/17--02:27: Robloxian 3.0
  • The Robloxian 3.0 is a term used by more mature roblox players to describe the new default man and woman body packages, which are highly criticised by them too. Due to the rise of roblox after the portrayal by many famous youtubers, many young children joined roblox and received the default packages.

Many of these children also take to the roblox catalog to take as many free stuff as they can, and developed a new noob culture on roblox. Very recently, the noob culture, especially the many stupid, dumb and idiotic things they say had become a popular meme, especially on twitter.

After popular youtuber, Keemstar tweeted a comparison of another youtuber to a robloxian 3.0 noob, mainly to roast him, has blown up, making the meme even more popular, spawning in new memes.
