    The great donation war

Cowbelly in response said that he would if someone donated 100 dollars within a minute. Calum donated after the time expired, so Cowbelly said if he donated 50 more dollars, he would take his shirt off. So, Calum did.

  • 05/25/17--10:48: Red Nose Day
  • Overview

Red Nose Day is an fundraising event for Comic Relief, a charity committed to raising money for childhood poverty throughout the world. The fundraising culminates on Red Nose Day, in which Comic Relief holds a live event, featuring standup comedy, sketches, and documentaries. The organization has raised more than $1 billion worldwide.

    Background

On December 25th, 1985, Comic Relief launched on the English television talk show Late, Late Breakfast Show from a Sudanese refugee camp. Four months later, the charity held the first, live fundraising event, “Comic Relief Utterly Utterly Live at Shaftesbury Theatre in London "(shown below).[1]

    Red Noses

In advertising materials for Red Nose Day, celebrities typically don Red Noses, which people can also buy for charitable donations. The symbolism of the nose is to connect the charity to comedy (the red nose of a clown) and to raise awareness for the event.

    Development

On February 8th, 1988, Comic Relief held the first Red Nose Day telethon, which featured more than 150 celebrities and comedians, raising more than $19 million. To date, Red Nose Day has brought in more than $1 billion globally.[2]

Also in 1988, a US chapter of Comic Relief launched. Comic Relief US was a televised event created by Bob Zmuda, televised by HBO, and hosted Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams.

The second Red Nose Day, Red Nose Day 2, was held on March 10th, 1989, raising more than $34 million. Since then, the UK event has been held bi-annually in March.

On February 4th, 2013, the Comic Relief YouTube page uploaded a video documentary (shown below) on who has been helped by the organization in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Red Nose Day. Additionally, the organization said they have helped 3 million Africans affected by HIV; provided 1 million vaccines, helped 7 million in urban slums; and assisted over 1 million in the world’s poorest nations.[3]

    Red Nose Day (US)

In 2015, Red Nose Day was formally brought to the United States. Unlike its British counterpart, Red Nose Day is held annually in America. That year, the band Coldplay released a viral video, Coldplay’s Game of Thrones: The Musical. The video received more than 23.4 million views.

    Love Actually Reunion

On March 22nd, 2017, a trailer for a reunion sketch featuring the cast of the film Love Actually was released (shown below). It currently has more than 577,000 views on YouTube. The sketch, which will premiere at Red Nose Day on May 25th, 2017, is one of the most anticipated sketches of Red Nose Day 2017.

  • 06/01/17--08:19: Sixpenceee Heals
  • Overview

Sixpenceee Heals refers to a controversy on Tumblr in which horror/supernatural blogger Sixpenceee attempted to launch a project in which a person could tell her their problems and mental troubles and she would write an individualized personal report in an attempt to help them for a $30 fee. Many Tumblr users found this exploitative as Sixpenceee is not a mental health professional, leading to criticism and jokes about the project.

    Background

Sixpenceee is a blogger who usually posts about events related to horror and the supernatural.[1] On May 26th, 2017, she announced the project Sixpenceee Heals, a project in which she would accept submissions of people who want to talk about their problems and mental health, and for a $30 fee, she would write an individualized guide to help that person. The post has since been deleted (reblogged version shown below).

    Developments

The project was quickly criticized. One of the most widely spread critiques came from Tumblr user v1als,[2] who took several issues with the project. First, they thought that Sixpenceee was taking advantage of people desperate enough for help they would seek the advice of a horror blogger rather than a professional therapist. Second, v1als believed Sixpenceee was hardly qualified to be offering mental health advice, and that it was potentially dangerous for someone as unqualified as Sixpenceee to be doling out mental health advice to a person she barely knows (portion of the critique shown below). v1als’ post, which features Sixpenceee’s original post, has over 18,000 notes.

“This would be a really lovely thing to do if you were just offering an ear but you’re taking so much responsibility and putting so much liability on yourself. You’re also providing paid therapy services to people when you have no qualifications, and that’s just so exploitative to me. If you want to help people lend an ear, but you can’t charge for being a friend. You certainly can’t charge people for services you have no right to be giving.”

Further critique of Sixpenceee Heals centered on the fact she had displayed ableism in the sort of horror and supernatural stories she would post, further disqualifying her from being a sound mental health counselor. v1als[3] compiled a list of such stories in response to a user asking them about it. The day after she announced the project, Sixpenceee[4] apologized for it, saying she would not follow through with it, and directed users to free websites that offered a similar service.

    Tumblr Jokes

Meanwhile, other members of Tumblr mocked the incident with jokes about Sixpenceee’s naïveté. For example, user Roosterboost[7] uploaded a mock ad for the service (shown below), gaining 7,500 notes.

A thread was posted to /r/OutOfTheLoop[5] was posted on May 31st asking about the incident, particularly jokes about Sixpenceee having a “child slave.” That reference is to the fact Sixpenceee’s white family living in India has a child servant. Memedocumentation[6] also covered the meme.

  • 05/25/17--21:18: Squeeze My Weiner
  • During a 2017 recording session of Cards Against Humanity, The crew, which included Mini Ladd, BigJigglyPanda, DaithiDeNogla, BasicallyIDoWrk, Ohmwrecker, and SMii7Y, started the session with their normal Cards antics. Until they turned their point of humor on Ohmwrecker.

Ohmwrecker is a youtuber with over 1 million subscribers, he plays a multitude of video games on his channel with many of the people listed above, however he hadn’t previously played Cards Against Humanity, so his friends invited him to play. Ohm was the butt of many jokes in a previous session , and was called many times, a “Noob.”

During a round in which BasicallyIDoWrk was the Card Czar, the black card read: “I love it when you _____.” The winning card of the round was BigJigglyPanda, who played the card: “pick this card so Ohm doesn’t win.” (at this point if Ohm got another point he would win.) However the standout card was the one on the far right end, which simply read “squeeze my weiner”Which SMii7Y was kind enough to point out. The card became a joke in the rest of
the video from that point on, from Tarzan impressions, rewrites of it in other rounds, it quickly became a joke among the youtubers in the session, and the audience watching the video.

In the next video that Mini Ladd uploaded, the card was again played, this time with the variation from “Squeeze my Weiner” to “Squeezed Weiner”. Later in the video , on a black card that reads: “Ah! How I love the smell of ____ in the morning.” The crew began to refer to Squeezed Weiner as a food item, like oranges that are juiced, or squeezed, everymorning. This began a running joke of referring to the joke, as a “Freshly Squeezed Weiner, not squeezed yesterday.” To the point of refusing to pick the Card because it didn’t say “Fresh” in it, until Ohm caved and picked it after getting sick of listening to them bicker over the card. So far, no more videos have been published with the joke on Mini Ladd’s channel, but we are sure they will in the future.

    Overview

Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard Commencement Speech refers to a speech Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg gave to the graduating class of 2017 at Harvard University, his alma mater. Online, the event was notable for jokes made about pictures of Zuckerberg’s speech and for a hack of Harvard’s paper, The Crimson, which was briefly filled with puns and photoshopped images of Zuckerberg.

    Background

On May 25th, 2017, Mark Zuckerberg returned to his alma mater, Harvard University, to give the commencement speech to the class of 2017 and receive an honorary degree (shown below). In the days leading up to the event, Zuckerberg toured his old dorm room on Facebook live[1] and shared a clip of him receiving his acceptance letter.[2]

    Developments

    The Crimson Hack

Hours before Zuckerberg’s speech, Harvard’s student paper, The Crimson, was hacked to show bizarrely edited photos of Zuckerberg and wacky headlines related to the Facebook creator (shown below). Though the site has since been cleansed of the posts, it can still be accessed via web.archive.[7] According to New York Magazine,[3] the hack most likely came from Harvard’s satirical publication, The Harvard Lampoon. The moment was covered by Daily Dot,[4] The Verge,[5] and Business Insider.[6]

    Twitter Jokes

On Twitter, users joked about the speech by mocking the men sitting behind Zuckerberg, who were dressed in top hats and suits, for looking like aristocrats from the early 20th century. These jokes were covered by The Daily Dot.[8]

    Overview

Women’s Only Wonder Woman Screening refers to special presentations of the 2017 superhero film Wonder Woman that were only open to female or female-identifying patrons at the Alamo Drafthouse movie theater chain. The screenings, while enjoyed and praised by some, were a source of controversy for others, as some claimed they were “sexist” and exclusionary.

    Background

On May 25th, 2017, The Alamo Drafthouse movie theater chain announced that they would be holding a screening of the 2017 superhero film Wonder Woman on June 6th, 2017 that was only open to “people who identify as women." The Alamo Drafthouse also stated, “Everyone working at this screening -- venue staff, projectionist, and culinary team -- will be female.”[1]

    Developments

The screening sold out in minutes, leading the Alamo Drafthouse to announce both a second screening and an expansion of Women Only presentations throughout the country.[2] On The Alamo Drafthouse’s Facebook page, the post announcing the screening received more than 4,200 reactions and 1,400 shares.[3]

    Online Reaction

The Alamo Drafthouse’s Facebook page soon became filled with responses because some men took offense to the idea of a “segregated” screening. That day, one user commented, “Very tacky Alamo. I’m all for equality and having a screening specifically stating it is not inclusive to everyone, is against equality. I’m not saying Alamo did this intentionally, but it is still just wrong.” His post (shown below, left) received more than 173 reactions. Another user commented, “Have you ever hosted a men’s only showing of any film?” The post (shown below, right) received more than 131 reactions.

Later that day, the Alamo Drafthouse[5] in New York City announced that they would also be hosting Women’s Only screenings with all the proceeds going to Planned Parenthood. The post on Twitter about the screening (shown below) received more than 940 retweets and 2,600 likes.

Much like Facebook, there was a mix of praise and outrage over the announcement. While some found this to be an empowering and positive idea for one of the first big-budget, female-led superhero movies, others said that they felt excluded. Some felt that they could take advantage of the Alamo Drafthouse’s announcement to include any one who identifies as women by sarcastically saying that they would just say they “identify as a girl.”

In response to the criticism, the New York Alamo Drafthouse Twitter[4] account posted a picture of Furiosa from the film Mad Max: Fury Road with the subtitle “[men yelling indistinctly] (shown below). The post received more than 4,800 retweets and 15,000 likes in under 24 hours.

On Reddit, reactions were also split. Redditor B-VOLLEYBALL-READY posted "[SocJus] Beth Elderkin – “A Women-Only Wonder Woman Screening Is Predictably Upsetting Dumb-Ass Sexists” (here we go again with this shit)" in response to an io9 article[2] on the /r/KotakuInAction subreddit.[12] The post received more than 231 points (93% upvoted) and 160 comments.

However, on the /r/Feminism subreddit and the /r/TrollXChromosomes the response was more positive. Redditor DBones90 posted “Women Only Wonder Women Screening Sells Out Immediately” in /r/Feminism,[13] receiving more than 270 points (92% upvoted) and 60 comments. Redditor Thumper5[14] posted “Yesterday a theater in my city announced they’d be holding a ‘Women (and People Who Identify As Women) Only’ screening of Wonder Woman. Shoutout to my local trolls (and Alamo Drafthouse management) for making the comment section a slightly less infuriating dumpster fire with gems like this one” in /r/ TrollXChromosomes. They received more than 1,100 points (95% upvoted) and 150 comments.

    Media Coverage

Several news outlets covered the controversy, including CNN,[6]CBS,[7]BBC,[8] The Washington Post,[9] Buzzfeed,[10] and more. That day, Twitter[11] published a Moments page, which detailed the reaction to the women’s only screening.

It was also noted by fans that Mr. Met could not possibly have given the middle finger, as he only has 4 fingers. @iamHectorDiaz[3] made that point, receiving over 5,400 retweets and 13,000 likes (shown below, left). Twitter user @ReignofApril[4] made a similar point using a Roll SafeGIF (shown below, right). The spread of jokes on Twitter was covered by New York Magazine,[6] Daily Dot,[7] and more.

Other Mets fans used the incident as an opportunity to joke about their team’s struggles. Several jokes were made pairing the Mets’ official statement with famous moments from recent Mets history of their ineptitude, such as 50 Cent’s infamous first pitch and their history with Tim Tebow. These jokes were covered by USA Today.[5]
