Disasters cannot be unforseen is a joke in a competitive UGC Highlander TF2 team known as “The Desolation Pack.” While finding a time for their first game, one of the members called blue messaged the leader of the team they were fighting on Steam. They found out that the leader said a lie, and they started rescheduling the game. The enemy team’s leader ended up saying “Disasters cannot be unforseen.” The Desolation Pack started joking about this, and it became a meme.

About

Outlast is an indie horror game developed and published by Red Barrels Studio[1]. In this first-person survival horror, you play as a freelance investigative journalist, who decides to investigate an isolated psychiatric hospital based on a lead you receives from an anonymous source[3]. The name of this institution is Mount Massive Asylum, located deep in the mountains of Lake County, Colorado. Here’s the script of the prologue to get into this mysterious ward:

You are Miles Upshur, an investigative reporter whose ambition is about to earn him an intimate tour of hell on earth. Always willing to risk digging into the stories no other journalist would dare investigate, you will seek out the dark secret at the heart of Mount Massive Asylum[2].
Miles Upshur, a freelance journalist, receives a tip-off from an anonymous source about Mount Massive Asylum, a psychiatric hospital owned and operated by the Murkoff Corporation. Upon gaining entry to the asylum, he finds the bodies of the asylum’s staff strewn about the hallways, and the now escaped inmates, known as The Variants, roaming the grounds. Progressing through the upper dormitories, he encounters an impaled tactical officer, who in his dying moments tells the journalist to get out of the asylum while he still can. Exiting the dormitories, Upshur is attacked by a powerful inmate named Chris Walker, who throws him through a window, and down to the atrium. Upon regaining consciousness, he encounters “Father” Martin, an inmate who believes he is a priest. Martin says Upshur was sent by God to be a witness to his cult and has to stay in the asylum, and then departs as Upshur passes out again.

Awakening, Upshur starts his attempt to find a way out of the building, while avoiding attacks from Walker and the other inmates. However, as he attempts to unlock the main doors from security control, he is ambushed and sedated by Martin, who again states that he must remain at the asylum and witness the events there. Martin shows him footage of the asylum’s security forces being slaughtered by a mysterious, seemingly supernatural entity known as The Walrider before transporting a now-unconscious Upshur to the asylum’s holding cells.

Upshur is forced to work his way upwards through the sewers after encountering a pair of inmates, the Twins, who express a desire to kill and eat him. However, the duo abstain from attacking for the moment, as Martin has asked them not to harm the journalist. Upshur makes his way through the sewers, while avoiding attacks from hostile inmates, finally reaching the asylum’s showers.

While attempting to escape through the showers, however, he is attacked yet again by Walker, and escapes through the vents. Progressing further through the building, Upshur is soon chased into a corner by several inmates, but escapes through a dumbwaiter, only to be captured by one of the Asylum’s now psychotic doctors, Dr. Rick Trager, who collects body parts of the inmates. Trager imprisons Upshur, strapping him to a wheelchair, and slices off two of his fingers using a large pair of shears. Upshur manages to escape and a chase ensues, followed by a struggle when Upshur pulls Trager into a moving elevator and crushes him between floors.

Encountering Martin again, Upshur exits onto the asylum grounds, but he is chased back inside by the Walrider, revealed to be a ghost-like being which Upshur can only see with the naked eye and while using his camera’s night vision. He is forced to circumnavigate the ruined stairway to access different floors of the building by following a trail of blood Martin left for him to follow. Upshur finally locates Martin in the asylum’s chapel to witness the latter’s death, self-immolation on a crucifix, before taking the now-repaired primary elevator down. Martin tricks Upshur, however, and instead of taking him to the exit, the elevator takes him to an underground military facility beneath the asylum. While searching for an exit, Upshur is chased by the Walrider and finds Walker on the other side of a door he runs through, who incapacitates him. However, before Walker can kill the journalist, the Walrider attacks and brutally kills the inmate before leaving. Upshur proceeds into the facility and meets Dr. Wernicke (originally believed to be dead), the scientist in charge of the entire experiment known as “Project Walrider”.

Wernicke explains that the Walrider is the result of nanotechnology experiments conducted on an inmate called Billy Hope, and that the Walrider is controlled by Hope. Wernicke orders Upshur to find Hope in the laboratory and kill him by shutting off his life support system, thus killing the Walrider. After accomplishing this task, Upshur is caught by the Walrider who brutally beats and possesses him. Limping towards the exit, he is confronted by Wernicke, who is accompanied by several armed guards who repeatedly shoot Upshur. As Upshur collapses to the floor, the screen fades to black and Wernicke’s voice is heard as he realizes Upshur has become the Walrider’s new host. Panicked gunfire, screams and mauling sounds are then heard briefly before the credits roll[4].

Shot/Chaser

About

Shot/Chaser refers to a copypasta template, which allows people to present a piece of hard or bad news, generally in the form of a quote or headline, as the “shot,” and a piece of funny or soft news as the “chaser,” a palate cleanser used to ease the news of the shot.

Origin

The phrase takes its name from the act of drinking a shot of alcohol with a chaser, something used to cleanse the mouth from the taste of the shot. In the context of journalism, the earliest known iteration comes from The National Journal’s The Hotline blog.[1] The blog started in 1987, but a running feature called “Last Call,” founded in August 7th, 1998,[2] became known for its “Shot/Chaster” segments, a humorous way of presenting severe news. The earliest example found on Internet Archive “The Wayback Machine” is from August 21st, 2008.[3]

Spread

In 2011, the National Journal required paid membership to read the magazine, and by proxy, “Last Call.” Currently, the Journal has more than 1,000 members.[6] On February 1st, 2013, The National Journal canceled “Last Call!” and effectively “Shot Chaser” at The National Journal.[4] However, shot/chaser did find a new home at Hotline’s “Wake-Up Call.” Hotline editor Kyle Trygstad posted an example on Twitter, regarding Kellyanne Conway’s potential conflict of interest by asking Fox News viewers to support President Donald Trump daughter’s clothing brands in March 2017.[5]

“Shot Chaser” has been a popular posting format on Twitter since 2009. On Twitter, people generally post shot/chasers with links and pictures. Twitter user @BraddJaffy tweeted one of the most popular examples (shown below) on May 16th, 2017. His “shot/chaser” pointed out contradictory actions by the Trump White House, asking Israeli officials not to share info and Trump sharing intelligence with Russians.[7] The tweet recieved more than 800 retweets 900 likes in 24 hours.

About

Star Citizen is an upcoming video game by Cloud Imperium Games. The game is an MMO (massive multiplayer online game) and holds the record for the largest single amount ever raised via crowdsourcing.

History

On October 18th, 2012, Cloud Imperium Games and game designer Chris Roberts announced the production and release of Star Citizen via Kickstarter.[1] By November 19th, the game had already raised more than $5. million, surpassed their $2.1 million goal.[2] As of January 2017, the game has amassed more than $141 million from backers.[4]

Originally slated for a 2014 release day, the game’s release has been fraught with setbacks. The game’s release was then moved to 2016, but after missing that deadline, the game’s developers have stated that the game is set for a 2017 release.

On December 19th, 2014, Cloud Imperium a trailer for Star Citizen (shown below). The trailer has since received more than 1.9 million views.

On August 16th, 2016, the Star Citizen YouTube account published a live walkthrough of the new demo (shown below, left) from Gamescom 2016. The video received more than 1.5 million views. The next day, the account uploaded just the gameplay of the presentation (shown below, right), which also received more than 1.5 millions views.

Reception

On December 27th, 2016, Wired[6] included Star Citizen in their 2016 Vaporware Awards reserved for games that have missed their release date. In their entry, Wired writes:

It’s reasonable to imagine that Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts’ grand vision of an all-encompassing multiplayer virtual universe may never be truly completed. With over $130 million in crowdfunding cash, and more rolling in by the day, Roberts and his team have more resources than virtually any other game creator to fulfill their grand vision of interstellar travel, spaceship combat, first-person shooting, and probably five more game genres. The developer has been continually releasing alpha versions allowing fans (some of whom have paid thousands of dollars to “own” virtual ships) to knock around with what it’s done so far, but when will the full game actually be released? Heck if we know.

The game has since been compared to No Man’s Sky, another MMO built on an ever-expanding engine. However, because that game failed to live up to the expectations of its fans, some have said that players look to Star Citizen to make good on No Man’s Sky’s promises.[8]

Fandom

On October 10th, 2012, the /r/starcitizen subreddit launched. Within four years, the subreddit had more than 100,000 subscribers.[3] On Twitter, the account @RobertsSpaceInd has more than 70,400 followers.[9] The Star Citizen Facebook page launched on October 30, 2013. It currently has more 150,000 likes and 147,000 followers.[10]

According to Roberts,[7] the game has a community of over 1.6 million players.

Impact

In 2014, Guinness World Records named Star Citizen’s funding as the single largest amount ever raised via crowdsourcing with $39.6 million.[5] Through crowdfunding, the developers allowed users to play the finished parts of the game.

Roberts explained the secret to the game’s successful crowfunding to Wired. He said:

““The big thing is the thing that we didn’t do. Most crowdfunding campaigns engage some people, convince them to become backers, and then the campaign stops. We didn’t stop.”
