On August 31st, 2015, Redditor ah00287 posted a two-pane image in which a woman says “I thought u said u wanted to smash” followed by a screenshot from the game "Super Smash Bros. to /r/funny^[2] (shown below).

On December 16th, 2016, YouTuber Incept uploaded footage of two birds involved in a courtship ritual titled “Lemme smash,” dubbed with various text-to-speech pickup lines (shown below).

On December 14, 2016, Vinny streamed the construction park simulator Planet Coaster.^[1] In the stream, Vinny, requested to record his voice to be placed in the in-game park, recorded a 27-second short, attempting to emulate the Super Mario Bros. Super Show! ending credits theme, “Do the Mario” (identified as “DootMario2.mp3”) Although the clip went fairly unnoticed in the initial full-stream release, the shorter highlight video compilation, released on January 7, 2017, would include the DootMario segment.^[2]

Betsy Devos’ “Grizzly Bear Attacks” Remark refers to a statement made by American entrepreneur Betsy DeVos in response to a question about whether firearms should be allowed in schools under any circumstances during her confirmation hearing for the position of the Secretary of Education under President Donald Trump’s administration in January 2017. DeVos’ remark, which implicitly defended the presence of firearms in schools to protect students from wild animals, was widely met with ridicule and derision on Twitter and elsewhere online.

On January 17th, 2017, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut asked DeVos if she believed “guns have any place in or around our schools,” to which she responded that it was “best left to locales and states to decide.” When asked to elaborate, DeVos replied that schools in Wyoming might need guns on campus “to protect from potential grizzlies.” That evening, a clip of the grizzly bears statement was tweeted by activist Deray Mckesson, which gained over 6,000 likes and 4,900 retweets within 72 hours.^[4]

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is a 2005 epic space opera film directed by George Lucas that tells the tale of Anakin Skywalker’s turn to the Dark Side of The Force, becoming the iconic Darth Vader.^[1] It is the sixth Star Wars film overall, and the third and final film in the prequel trilogy. Years after its release, the film inspired an ironic fandom and the creation of memes revolving around its characters and dialogue.

History

Lucas began working on the script for Revenge of the Sith before production of Episode II: Attack of the Clones ended. The film began production in 2003 and was released in 2005. Revenge of the Sith broke several box office records during its opening week and went on to earn over $848 million worldwide, making it, at the time, the third-highest-grossing film in the Star Wars franchise. It stars Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker, Ewan McGregor as Obi-wan Kenobi, and Natalie Portman as Queen Amidala.

Plot

The film opens with Anakin and Obi-wan rescuing Supreme Chancellor Palpatine from the hold of General Grievous and Count Dooku. After a battle, Anakin beheads Dooku at Palpatine’s urging. Then, Anakin reunites with his wife, Queen Amidala, who is pregnant. Anakin has prophetic visions that Amidala will not survive childbirth. Chancellor Palpatine then tantalizes Anakin with knowledge of the Dark Side of the Force, including a way to stop people from dying. Eventually, Palpatine reveals he is Sith Lord Darth Sidious, and brings Anakin to the Dark Side promising the knowledge that only he can save Amidala. The film received generally positive reviews, particularly in comparison to the first two prequels, which were poorly reviewed. The film has a score of 68 on Metacritic^[2] and a 79 on Rotten Tomatoes.^[3] On Rotten Tomatoes, the critical consensus was “With Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, George Lucas brings his second Star Wars trilogy to a suitably thrilling and often poignant -- if still a bit uneven -- conclusion.” However, the film was not without its critics, as professional critics and fans alike still bemoaned the dialogue, particularly the love dialogue. In his massive video review of the film, Mr. Plinkett pointed out the love dialogue was more comedic than romantic.

On August 1st, 2014, The Daily Mail^[6] published several photographs of Swift eating a cup of frozen yogurt and sitting by herself in a park in New York City (shown below). On January 25th, 2017, a photo from the article in which Swift is shown resting her chin on the palm of her hand was uploaded to Imgur (shown below, right).^[1]

In the early 1940s, Brooklyn-born toy inventor George Lerner came up with the idea of inserting small, pronged body and face parts into fruits and vegetables to create a “funny face man”. Some speculate he got the idea from his wife’s nephew Aaron Bradley, who was seen placing sticks inside of potatoes in the family garden. Lerner would often take potatoes from his mother’s garden and, using various other fruits and vegetables as facial features, he would make dolls with which his younger sisters could play. The grape-eyed, carrot-nosed, potato-headed dolls became the principal idea behind the plastic toy which would later be manufactured.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon (born August 19, 1951) is a french politician who served as delegate Minister for vocational education under the socialist governement of Lionel Jospin (2000-2002), Senator (1986-1995 and 2004-2010) and EU Parliament member (since 2009). After he left the french Socialist Party in 2008, he co-founded the political movement Front de Gauche (left-wing front) in alliance with the French Communist Party. During the last decade, Mélenchon rose to national onlie fame for his strong left-wing positions and his angry verbal rants, most notably since he announced his run for the 2017 french presidential election.^[1]

History

Political Career.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon (sometimes abbreviated as “JLM”) started his political engagement during the riots of may 1968^[2], while he was in high school.^[3] He later joined several liberal and pro-communist unions organizations while he studied philosophy at the University of Besançon, before joining the french Socialist Party (PS) in 1976. During his PS-membership, he often took positions labeling him as member of the “radical” or “hard” wing of the party, most notably during the mid-2000s when he took position against the majority of the party and campaigned in favor of the “No” to the 2005 Referendum about the European Constitution.^[4] In 2008, Mélenchon left the PS and founded the Parti de Gauche (Left-Wing Party), which later got closer to the French Communist Party (PCF) and eventually fused into a joint alliance called the Front de Gauche (Left-wing Front).

One of the earliest times Mélenchon acquired online fame happened on October 10, 2010, after he was invited by a documentary filmmaking team to react to a video showing an interview of a protesting factory union worker by TV news anchor David Pujadas. During the said interview, Pujadas asked several questions to the workers that many observators deemed as inappropiate and disrespectful, for instance accusing the workers to promote violent protests. When shown the said video, Mr. Mélenchon violently reacted, calling Mr. Pujadas an “asshole” and a “stooge” with disgust (shown below, reuploaded.). At the time, the video became viral and widely commented in the different mainstream news outlets.^[5][6][7]

2012 French Presidential Campaign

On January 21st, 2011, Mélenchon announced he would be running for the 2012 Presidential election, against the incumbent conservative president Nicolas Sarkozy.
His campaign was marked by his large rallies, gathering more than 120 000 people in the cities of Paris and Marseille, which was totally unprecedented for an independant left-wing candidate. However, during the first round of the election, he only gathered 11.1% of the popular votes, far behind the mainstream socialist candidate and president-elect, François Hollande (28.63% on the 1st round, 51.64% on the 2nd round)^[8]

On february 10th, 2016, Jean-Luc Mélenchon announced during an interview for the television network TF1 his bid for the April / May 2017 Presidential election,^[9] as an independant candidate, and that he would not run for the Socialist Party’s primary election. He later exposed his program^[10] and slogan : La France Insoumise (Unsubmissive France). On January 12th, 2017, He claimed to be the first candidate to gather the 500 endorsements required to officially run for the Presidential Election.^[11]

Jean-Luc Mélenchon is well known for his strong progressive and far left positions, always defending the defending the french working class and welfare state, opposing them to the deregulated capitalism imposed by the EU institutions, and most notably by the German Government (which he explained in a book he wrote on the topic^[18]). He also often advocates for a reform of the french constitution to create a new “6th Republic” with more transparence and direct democracy. During his speeches and rallies, as well as interviews, he is also well known for using a rather mild and often critical language (especially towards journalists), which has been deemed as “politically incorrect” by many observers.

Criticism

After he lost the 2012 elections and took position aginst the economic policies of François Hollande’s administration, Mr. Mélenchon often became the target of criticism, from the conservative right-wing as well as the moderate left-wing, who accused him of populism and juged his program as irrealistic. His controverisal positions regarding his never hidden admiration for left-wing south american dicators like Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro were also widely discussed.^[19][20] More recently, his ambiguous opinions about the Syrian civil war and the election of Donald Trump led his opponents to accuse him of tacit endorsement of Vladimir Putin’s authoritarian agenda.^[21]

Jean-Luc no Revolution is an action / comedy manga book created by Reunion-Island-born french Youtube comedian David “Ganesh2” Chabant^[22], and published by LuLu editions.^[23]
The plot revolves around Jean-Luc Mélenchon practicing a martial art known as “Communist Kung-Fu” and punching the members of the french parliament after they decided to raise their wage by 500%.

Due to its absurd plot and over-the-top parodic action, visibly inspired by popular Shonen series like Fist of the North Star , the book gained an online fame among french anime fans as well as Melenchon’s supporters.

“Can’t stenchon the mélenchon” is a catchphrase derived from Can’t stump the trump used by Mélenchon supporters online. It originated from different forum posts on the gaming news site Jeuxvideo.com, famous for being the birthplace of the noelisme subculture. It rose to popularity during late november 2016, as several polls on those forums showed a clear preference of most users for Mélenchon as opposed to his nationalist opponent Marine Le Pen.^[28] Those polls lead to several other posts mocking the outcome of the polls, pointing out that the forums were often seen as largely dominated by conservatives views and alt-right opinions.^[29] Nevertheless, the Melenchon supporters created several other forum threads using the slogan, sharing images praising Mélenchon’s program, as well as video montage parodies showing him roasting his opponents during televised debates. How to start a conversation with a girl is an exploitable picture supposedly showing advice on how to properly greet a girl in online chats. Common “hi” greeting is always marked as wrong while the right answer contains various catchphrases, pop culture references or other memes in order to parody serious online pick up tutorials.

Origin

While it’s difficult to find the first template starting the trend, meme cataloguing website Sizzle posted a picture, titled “How to start a conversation with a girl”^[1], of a supposed screenshot from an online chat in which “hi” is marked as a wrong answer in how to approach a girl online while the good answer is a reference to the aaaaa meme, with another post stating “it worked every time” (shown below, left). According to Sizzle, the image was found on August 22nd, 2016, linking to a Facebook post that had then been removed, meaning that it may have existed prior. On Sizzle again, another image, this time referencing the LegoStar Wars videogames (shown below, right), links back to a working Facebook post^[2], dating back to August 22nd as well. It may be the earliest online trace of the meme which garnered, as of January 2017, more than 1.900 likes and 1.100 shares.

Sizzle alone lists more than 100 variations on the meme, gathered from different social media posts from Instagram, to Twitter and Facebook^[3].
On August the 25th, 2016, the Dank Meme Plug twitter account uploaded a variation image referencing the Lighting McQueen’s Ka-Chow meme^[6], gaining more than 4 200 retweets and more than 6 300 likes as of January 2017. Several Twitter users responded to the tweet by posting alleged screenshots of their attempts at using the catchphrase in online chats.
On September 4th, the Meme Reviewer website posted an article about the meme, noting its “freshness”^[4] and giving it a 7.5/10 mark.
On October 15th, Imgur user sarachi uploaded several anti-meme pictures, including How To Start A Conversation To A Girl^[5](shown below). It accumulated to over 350 000 views in the next four months.
