    Overview

Mariah Carey’s New Years Eve Performance FAIL refers to singer-songwriter Mariah Carey’s live performance at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest in 2016, during which she stopped singing due to a technical malfunction with her monitors.

    Background

On December 31st, 2016, Carey stopped singing while performing her 1991 pop song “Emotions” at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest, claiming she could not hear through her audio monitors. That evening, YouTuber scubafeet uploaded footage of the performance, which gained over 9.7 million views and 16,500 comments in the first 24 hours (shown below).

    Developments

    Carey’s Response

Hours later, Carey posted a tweet saying “shit happens” and wishing everyone a “happy and healthy new year” (shown below). Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 159,000 likes and 64,000 retweets.

    Online Reaction

That evening, a video of the incident reached the front page of /r/cringe,[1] where it gathered upwards of 30,900 votes (77% upvoted) and 1,200 comments within 24 hours. The following day, Redditor CrimsonPig submitted a photograph of a train wreck titled “Still image of Mariah Carey’s New Year’s performance” to /r/funny.[4] On Twitter, clips of the performance were widely circulated, many of which contained captions denouncing the year 2016 (shown below). A collection of the tweets were subsequently highlighted by the women’s interest blog Bustle.[6]

    Sabotage Accusation

On January 1st, 2017, Carey’s manager Stella Buclochnikov accused the show’s producers of intentionally sabotaging the performance “to get ratings” in an interview with the entertainment news site US Weekly.[2]

“They acknowledged that they knew her inner ears were not working. They did not cut to a commercial. They did not cut to the West Coast feed; they left her out there to get ratings”

That day, Dick Clark Productions released a statement refuting the sabotage claims as “outrageous and frankly absurd.”[5] Meanwhile, Twitter[3] created a Moments page titled “Rockin’ Eve producers call Mariah camp’s ‘sabotage’ claim ‘absurd’,” highlighting various tweets about the accusation.

    News Media Coverage

In the coming days, several news sites published articles about the online reaction to the performance, including The New York Times,[8] The Washington Post[9] and Jezebel.[10]

  • 01/02/17--11:42: Bernie Would Have Won
  • About

Bernie Would Have Won is a popular phrase on Twitter which refers to the idea that Bernie Sanders would have won the 2016 United States Presidential Election over Donald Trump had he been the Democratic Party’s nominee instead of Hillary Clinton. The phrase was used by Sanders supporters in sincere post-election arguments and articles and overtime became a phrasal meme.

    Origin

Following the election of Republican Donald Trump, some Democrats examining the events of the election opined that Bernie Sanders would have won had he been the nominee. The Washington Post[1] published an article two days after the election that made the argument citing Bernie’s popularity in the “rust belt” states (Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin) that Clinton lost and the populist supporters of Trump. Several articles came out in the following days refuting or reiterating the argument.[2][3][4]

    Spread

In the weeks following the election, “Bernie Would Have Won” became a common phrase used on Twitter by Sanders supporters, first as a way to argue against Democrats who believed that Sanders’ candidacy hurt Clinton in the general election, and then eventually as a way to troll Clinton supporters who they believed had treated Sanders unfairly in the primary. The phrase was used to counter arguments from center-left liberals that Sanders would not have won the election before it turned into a joke. One of the more popular examples of the phrase’s joke uses was to insert it into popular song lyrics (ex: shown below).

One of the most popular examples of the joke was tweeted January 1st, 2017 following an act of vandalism that caused the iconic “Hollywood” sign in Hollywood, California to read “Hollyweed.” Twitter user @thefurlinator[5] tweeted an image of the Hollywood sign photoshopped to read “Berniewood Have Won” in a tweet that gained 5,000 retweets and over 15,000 likes in a day (shown below).

  • 01/02/17--13:00: The Hollywood Sign Parodies
  • About

The Hollywood Sign is an iconic billboard sign situated on Mount Lee, Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles, California that spells out “Hollywood” in white capital letters. Since its erection in 1923, the sign has become a historic monument of American pop culture and a popular subject of various parodies and imitations online.

    Origin

    The Sign

The construction of the sign, which originally read “Hollywoodland,” was commissioned and completed in 1923 by a group of L.A.-based real estate developers as a billboard advertisement for their upscale residential housing project with the same name. Standing at 45-foot-long (13.7 meters), 350 feet (106.7 m) wide and studded with nearly 4,000 20-watt light bulbs, the sign was initially intended to be on display for 18 months, but it became a permanent fixture with the rapid expansion of Los Angeles during the onset of a period known as the Golden Age of Hollywood. In 1949, the City of Los Angeles Parks Department and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce began the restoration and reconstruction of the sign, which had sustained extensive deterioration after the Great Depression, ultimately resulting in the removal of “LAND” in order to reflect the entire district, rather than the housing development.

    Vandalism

Due to its iconic status as a world famous landmark, the sign has been physically altered by various pranksters and vandals without authorization on numerous occasions since as early as the 1970s. One of the earliest notable modifications was made by Daniel Finegood, a L.A. furniture business owner and neon sign artist, who hung curtains over the letters “OO” to make it read “Hollyweed” on January 1st, 1976, the day when California’s relaxed marijuana law took effect.

    About

*Teleports Behind You* Nothing Personal, Kid is a phrase commonly associated with edge and a mastery of the blade (most frequently through the phrase *unsheathes katana*), although it’s most common usage is in parody images mocking both groups.

    Background

Teleporting behind someone is a common method of displaying speed and power over an opponent in action-orientated anime series, where fighters move in a speed that has more in common with teleportation than simply quick movement. On TvTropes, this is a trope known as “No, I Am Behind You”;[1] where the possible origin of the trope is linked to the rapid movement technique[2] from Dragon Ball. However, due to the common use of katanas in combination with the phrase, another likely origin would be Bleach, a series renowned for its use of swords and the trope.

“Nothing Personal, Kid” is derived from “Psssh… Nothin Personnel… Kid…”, the characteristic phrase of the Coldsteel the Hedgeheg; a Sonic OC notorious for being a stereotype of an overly edgy character. In forums and imageboards, the phrase is used in tendem with cringeworthy displays of roleplay; leading to the phrase being combined with teleportation by parodying how an edgy character like Coldsteel would act in a situation. Parody images featuring the phrase frequently use the bastardized style of the original image.
