About

Dexter’s Rude Removal was a rumored lost episode created during the original run of Dexter’s Laboratory. Much speculation was made to what the supposed episode contained before producers of the show confirmed the said episode’s existence. The episode was later released and made public on the internet.

Origin

During the run of the original television series, rumor came about of a ‘Lost Episode’ that was only shown at conventions and private events. Genndy Tartakovsky, who created, produced (and held multiple other production roles in the show) did confirm the existence of the episode. In an interview with an individual from the Deseret News, Tratakovsky described the synopsis of the supposed episode,

“Dexter’s trying to get the rudeness out of Dee Dee and so he creates the rude removal system. But they kind of get stuck in it together, and they create clones of themselves, which are rude. And we had them swear, but we had beeps over the swearing. So I think that’s one that you can only catch at some festivals and stuff. But not on the air.”[1]

Episode Details Leaked

On May 22, 2007, The Big Cartoon Forum user TyphoidTimmy made a post claiming he had seen a presentation of an episode at the Comic Con convention.[2] In it, he revealed a general summary of the episode.

A little history..

I was in attendance at the only showing of ’Dexter’s Rude Removal’ at the first showing at Comic Con (I have been told it was shown censored at other places but this was the only showing with the gloves off uncensored) and was asked to register here just to post and explain the plot.

CAUTIONSALTYLANGUAGEAHOY

The panel for Dexter was with a special guest being Genndy who delighted us with some oncoming specials and such. He then hinted that he also wanted to show us something ‘truly special’ at the end.

Nearing the end, a girl from CN stood up and announced that everyone under 18 needed to stand up and would be given something special but had to leave. The kids filed out as the adults kind of looked at each other with a big ? over our heads. Genndy kept grinning.

After all the kids were shooed, Genndy looked at the remaining 20-30 of us and said “We made something special as an inhouse project to show only at CN parties and the like…I loved it soo much you guys are gonna get a treat…Dexter’s Rude Removal”

The girl then stood in front of us and warned us with bodily harm if she caught any of us taping anything or even remembering hard. She was pretty much imagining it getting out there and torpedoeing CN with lawsuits. “I want you people to know this will NEVER be made public…so count yourself extremely lucky”. Finally Genndy shooed her away.

Title screen: Dexter’s Rude Removal. Dexter is mooning us and Dee Dee is flipping us the bird. Oh boy!

Plot: Dexter has decided that rudeness is preventing him from becoming the perfect child and has constructed a ‘Rude Extractor’ to separate his bad mojo. Dee Dee of course shows up at the wrong possible time and wreaks havoc. Dexter manages to tackle her, directly into the Rude Beam…

Dee Dee and Dexter separate from each other, spawning a evil twin of themselves and knocking out their good halves. Both look at their good selves and immediately begin to curse each other, their surroundings and trash the place. *k this *k that…you are a *king idiot…who the *k you calling a *king idiot, you *king idiot?

Mom calls "Dexter…Dee Dee….LUNCH!

“AW *t…I AM *kING STARVED!” They tear out of the lab and blunder their way through the house, wrecking stuff and cursing up a blue streak.

Just within earshot of mom, they stop cursing as they drop into their seat, and start shoveling food noisily with belches and farts. Mom pauses and turns asking how their food is. Dexter belches and exclaims

“Aw *king hell mom, this *t is ***kin great!”

to which Dee Dee counters

“Shut the *k up you *thead…you can’t *king curse in front of *king Mom!”

and they both begin to literally curse the *t out of each other. This exchange manages to make Mom faint and they really go at it (Seriously, Dee Dee called Dexter a Skull*king Douchebag one time).

Eventually, Dexter and DeeDee wake up and manage to trap the cursing twins back in the lab and eradicate them (To the scream of *k OFF, YOU *kIN NERD from the evil sides). They leave the lab as Dexter declares that ‘Lucky we got them in time…ah well no harm done’.

Rounding the corner, they find Mom standing there menancingly with a big bar of soap as she screams “DEXTERANDDEEDEEGETOVERHERE”. The black circle closes over Dexter as he looks at the audience and goes “Oh ***k!”

The End

Needless to say, all of us were in complete hysterics. Both my friend and I were tearing up from laughing so hard. Just hearing Dee Dee’s high pitched voice sailor talking makes it proabably the most wanted cartoon to see.

Will it ever make it out there? I dunno, they have really kept it sealed away. In this day and age of Youtube, that says something…

That’s it…I will check back to answer any questions. Thanks for reading!

Announcement

On December 2nd, 2012, AdultSwim announced that they had obtained the un-aired episode and prepared to air it. They encouraged viewers to use the hashtag, #telljeff to remind them to upload the episode online. Similar videos sprung up encouraging viewers to do the same, but no result came from it as was promised.

Official Release and Spread

On January 22nd, 2013 a YouTube video posted by AdultSwim began circulating around the internet purporting to be the official episode of Dexter’s Rude Removal. It bore many similarities to TyphoidTimmy’s account, validating the legitimacy of the episode. In less than 9 hours, the video has already acclimated over 40 000 views, and has been shared on multiple social media websites such as Tumblr, Reddit[3] and 4Chan. There was some disappointment as many had expected the episode to be much more raunchier than it was, but nevertheless the episode was well recieved.

About

Catfish is a term used to refer to people who make false accounts on social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter for the sake of developing online relationships with strangers. The phrase is used both in the context of someone making a fake profile to deceive others into a relationship and to simulate a false relationship.

Origin

The term catfish originally comes from the 2010 documentary[5] of the same name. Directed by Ariel Schulman[1] and Henry Joost[2], Catfish was the story of Schulman’s brother, Yaniv “Nev” Schulman[3], as he developed an online relationship with a girl named Megan Pierce. Nev Schulman met Megan through her younger sister, Abby, who painted a version of one of Nev’s photographs. As the documentary continues, it is revealed that the Megan Nev has been talking with is fake, and that the real Megan Pierce is currently in rehab. It is also revealed that Megan’s mother, Angela, has been the one in contact with Nev, and faked both the painting and the relationship. The term, as well as the name of the documentary, come from an anecdote where putting catfish in cod tanks made them active when shipping. Vince describes people like Angela as catfish, making sure others are active.

Many people have expressed skepticism at the authenticity of the film, believing that the circumstances are too well played to actually be legitimate. However, no one in the film or in production as confirmed these beliefs.

In November 2012, a television series based on the premise of the film began on MTV[4].

Spread

On July 22, 2010, the term Catfish, as it is used in this context, was first added to Urban Dictionary, defining it as “someone who pretends to be someone they’re not using Facebook or other social media to create false identities, particularly to pursue deceptive online romances.” The term faded after a few months, but grew in popularity slightly two years later, when the MTV show was broadcast.

Te’o Girlfriend Hoax

While the term was used minimally at first, it experienced a resurgence in popularity due to the circumstances surrounding Notre Dame Football Player Manti Te’o and his fake girlfriend.

Search Trends

The term “catfish” gains a large number of searches due to the fish of the same name. However, the term has had increases in search interest that parallel the release of the film and the broadcast of the television show/use of the term.

Please note that many uses of the hashtag #catfish are in reference to the television show.

ABOUT

A Dragable or Transparent image is a type of picture often found on Tumblr dashboards. They are often .png images but some times animated .gifs. Both of these image types have a special property which allows them to have transparent backgrounds/areas within them. This property is exploited by Tumblr users where they hide messages or images (masking them in dashboard white) within an uploaded image so it looks innocent or blank. Its only when the image is dragged onto a darker background that the user finds out that there is a hidden message.

More inventive users make animated gifs which instruct you to grab the image and drag it to determine an out come or spoilers i.e. your death, your future lover etc.

About

Cumbox (also spelled cum box) is a Reddit Copypasta of redditor’s story in an Askreddit thread of how and where he disposes his ejaculate after masturbation. The story gained popularity outside of reddit and has been often referenced within the website due to it’s shock factor and disgusting content.

Origin

On May 1st, 2012, Reddit user ohgoshwheretobegin posted a thread in subreddit AskReddit (a Reddit sub-forum where users ask for and receive answers from other users on specific questions) titled, “Throwaway time! What’s your secret that could literally ruin your life if it came out?”[1] The thread became popular, and was filled with many dark and disturbing stories in response to the original question, so much it became #3 top thread on Reddit of all time. Among the many responses was a story from redditor Lynfect, who told the story of him stealing some of his cousin’s possessions.[2]

Cousin died when we were both seventeen. There was a reception at his house just after the funeral. I went into his room and stole all the money… [and] some other valuables that his parents wouldn’t realize were gone…

…Also my cum box.

Upon further inquiry buy reddit user eeeeevil[3], Lynfect disclosed further information of the previously mentioned cum box.[4]

Well, it is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a shoebox, or at least once was, and whenever I masturbate I cum into it. I’ve had it for two or three years now I think, so it has a fair amount of cum. It smells atrocious, and I tried to burn it once. When I lit it on fire, it was too damp due to the cum that it simply sizzled and didn’t manage to actually lite up. Turns out burning cum smells awful, so I had to spray it with a deodorant body spray just to get the old smell of burnt cum away. It also has some drenched papers stuck to it. That’s pretty much it.

Along with the account, Lynfect also uploaded an Imgur album containing images of the cum box for proof.[5] Much disgust and horror was expressed by many other redditors in response to the account and album. Upon frequent request by redditors, Lynfect decided to post an additional update image of the now oft-mentioned cum box[6], of which had started to develop mold.

Spread

Immeadiately after being posted to Reddit, the story went viral outside of Reddit, being mentioned on websites such as Slacktory[7], Uproxx[8], Buzzfeeed[9] and FunnyJunk[10]. The two words used to describe the object that contained Lynfect’s semen became homogenized to describe the object in particular. Since it’s posting, the original Imgur album containing the pictures of the cum box has achieved more than 6.6 million views alone, with the update image obtaining approximately a quarter of a million views. Today, the cumbox story has been copypasta’d and been referenced among redditors within the website in the same vein of other notable shock stories.

We Came by Bike

About

We Came by Bike” (Japanese: チャリで来た, Chari de kita) is the superimposed message on a photo of Japanese early teen homeboys. This catchy message and their impressive pose in the picture have been the popular fodder of photoshop, illustrations and re-enactments by Japanese internet users since late 2011.

Origin

The origin of this meme is a print club sticker picture of four Japanese homeboys pretending to be cool with fist pumping and smug look. And, the message written on the picture by themselves is: “We came by bike.” (チャリで来た。).

For Japanese sensibilities, this picture looks so much ridiculous because of these reasons:

  • They wear dowdy Japanese juvenile delinquents (Bōsōzoku[1] or Yanki[2]) style fashion. Nowadays, it’s considered quite uncool especially on the web.
  • All of them is too short in height and baby-faced look to wear that fashion.
  • The message isn’t something to brag about at all.

It’s uncertain where this picture came from, although someone says it was leaked from back data in print club sticker by video game arcade staff, or uploaded to a mobile social network service popular among junior high / high school students by themselves. At least, this picture have been occasionally posted to threads on /news4vip/ board in 2channel since late 2009, where people collect ridiculous pictures of Bōsōzoku boys and girls.

Spread

This picture began capturing the attention by itself around the end of 2011. On January 8th, 2012, a thread for collecting parodies of “We came by Bike” succeeded to gather dozens of photo collages.[3] A Twitter bot posting those photoshop collections was also launched in that month.[4] From then on, parody illustrations featuring these boys began increasing on both Japanese illustrators community pixiv[5] and niconico Seiga[6], the illustration sharing service in Nico Nico Douga (NND). People have created those parodies by rearranging the order of the letters in the title to various humorous statements in rhyme scheme.

In a reflection of this online popularity, Niwango, the company managed NND, added the “We came by bike” photo frame to their original print club sticker in the niconico headquarters shop in Harajuku, Tokyo in the following month.[7] Besides, a Japanese company YEDOFACTORY released an iphone/ipad application of superimposing “We came by Bike.” style message on photos in October of that year.[8]

Response Came by Magazine

On March 2012, it made a headline on the web that the three in them appeared as friends of an interviewed girl’s boyfriend on the first issue of Japanese gal fashion magazine egg JK.[9] This article mentioned their online popularity, introduced them as the famous people on the web and posted their response to the online fame: “Hey 2channel-ers, that’s enough with the jokes.” It was also revealed that they took this picture when they were 13 years old.

And the final sentence in the article was this confession by them: “Today, We Came by Motorbike”.

False Accusation

On July 10th 2012, a Japanese celebrity Dewi Sukarno[10], the third wife of the previous Indonesian leader Sukarno[11], posted a message about the Otsu bullying case[12] to her blog.[13] In that post, she totally ignored Japanese juvenile laws and aggressively blamed perpetrators with their real names and several pictures that were flowing as their faces on the web. However, one of the pictures in that post was what was captured from “We came by bike”.

Screenshot taken from Dewi Sukarno’s blog post

Shortly after, she replaced their real names to initials and took down all pictures from the article. But her failure was immediately covered by not a few 2channel affiliated blogs and online gosip news sites.[14]

‘Scout Face / Profile Picture Trend’ are a series of spreading comments that occur within community websites where users have been uploading profile pictures while commenting for a humorous effect. Some include using the profile picture with a comment that relates to the profile picture while others may comment back using the same image either edited or a different image from the series of the original picture. Eg: Team Fortress 2, My Little Pony, etc.

Origin

The profile picture image trend started mainly on Youtube where during their latest update (written this 26 Jan 2013) the comment section allowed users to view the profile picture of others without having to click on their accounts. This was used firstly to tell from others for what they liked and either ‘trolled’ them for it.

The most popular image that is being used today is the ‘Scout Face’. This face originated from the video ‘Heavy and Scout think they are birds’ where the face pops up at the beginning of the video

Fandom Roleplay Accounts are parody profile accounts where the user pretends to be a fictional character. They are usually associated with popular fandoms, and interact through comments or videos to give the impression that the fictional character is an active member of the site.

Overview

Most websites with active roleplays tend to have several features that allow roleplaying to propagate. The first is Reply and Show Comment features, which allow commenters to read previous replied comments and thus form comment chains. Second are Voting and Top Comment feature, which allowed highly regarded comments to by noticed by their votes, for those regarded as best to remain at the top of the thread for more people to read. Last is Profile Images, which are used by roleplayers to show an image of the assumed character identity. Websites that include some or all of these features include YouTube, DeviantArt, Facebook, Twitter, the A.V. Club, and Know Your Meme.

On YouTube

Superman, Batman, Chuck Norris, and Spider-ManLight and Mad Mavrick

YouTube comments first began introducing roleplaying when the “Show Comment” feature was added in mid-2012, allowing comment threads to form without the hinderance of having to be manually searched for. Later YouTube introduced the Profile Image feature, which let the YouTuber add an image of their choice to appear alongside their comment, further propagating the abundance of RPs on YouTube.

Editor’s Note: Work in Progress

About

Underage Drinking Prevention Poster Parodies (Japanese: 未成年者飲酒防止ポスター) refer to a series of parody illustrations for a 3-panel cartoon poster in an enlightening campaign for underage drinking prevention, which was drawn by a high school student.

On January 2013, this illustration began spreading quickly via Twitter, and became to be set to a subject for parodies and tributes because of its unique taste.

Origin

The poster is one of the submissions in The 11th Underage Drinking Prevention Poster/Slogan/Shcool Activity Campaign Award, which was co-hosted by Brewers Association of Japan and Japanese major beer companies in 2012.[1] It was drawn by a student in Tajimi Technical Highschool, Gifu Prefecture, and got the highest award in high school student poster category in the contest.

OriginalTranslation
How to Refuse Alcohol for Minors
1. Clearly say “I Don’t Drink.”

“NO”
2. Say the Reason why you don’t drink.“

”For my bright future." (tck, tck)
3. If you’re still enforced drinking, Just run.

“Good bye.”
Incidentally, enforcing alcohol drinking to minors is punished by laws.

This poster started to be caught attention by a tweet posted by a Japanese Twitter user nagarehoshi0415[2] on January 22nd, 2012.[3] The tweet earned more than 9800 retweets and 3000 favorites within a week.

Spread

This poster caused surrealistic lulz to viewers by its light sense of humor and a young boy’s playful facial expression which were seemed incongruous for serious-minded poster contests at a glance.

Shortly after, amatuer illustrators began making parody illustrations by reproducing this poster with their favorite fictional characters. Many of them are just refusing alcohols as well, but others are refusing their own problems (riding on the Evangelion, getting into the monster ball, contract for magical girls, etc…).

In the following day of the twitter post, compilations of these illustrations were featured on the Naver Matome search portal archives.[4] With in the first five days, there were 482 tweets[5] that used the phrase “未成年者飲酒防止ポスター” or “Underage Drinking Prevention Poster”, and the Japanese illustrators community pixiv gathered more than 170 illustrations.[6] ITmedia News was the first news site to cover the fad on January 25th, 2012.[7]

About

Gainaxing, also known as ‘Gainax Bounce’ or the ‘Gainax Bounce Effect’, is a anime related term created by Studio Gainax that refers the way a female character’s breasts move around gratuitously, often in ways that seem to defy physics. The breasts for the female character’s body usually bounce, jiggle, sway, and bobble as if the character has no bra under their clothing.

Origin

The earliest known of Gainaxing appeared around several anime in the 1980’s. Studio Gainax, an anime production, created their first OVA in 1988 called Gunbuster (Top wo Nerae!). The Gainax Bounce is found in three female characters known as Noriko, Kazumi, and Jung.

Spread

While Gainaxing has been used by numerous animation studios, the Gainax Bounce Effect grows larger (including the breasts) and popularized by the wider spread of various anime created by Gainax Studio.
