2015 Los Angeles Unified School District Closure

0
0

Overview

2015 Los Angeles Unified School District Closure was an unscheduled one day shutdown of all schools in Los Angeles and its adjoining Southern California cities on December 15th, 2015. Prompted by an e-mail threat sent to several board members of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the closure resulted in the recess of 900 schools and 187 public charter schools and affected more than 700,000 students in the country’s second-largest school district. However, the e-mail threat was subsequently determined to be a hoax.

Background

On December 15th, 2015, the LAUSD officials announced a temporary closure of all district schools on the grounds of a credible threat of terrorism they had received via e-mail from madbomber@cock.li on the previous day. According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the email sent to officials alleged that multiple schools would be targeted in an attack involving pistols, assault rifles and explosive devices concealed in backpacks and packages.

E-mail Transcript

TO WHOM IT MAYCONCERN:

I am emailing you to inform you of the happenings on Tuesday, 12/15/15.

Something big is going down. Something very big. It will make national headlines. Perhaps, even international ones. You see, my last 4 years here at one of the district high schools has been absolute hell. Pure, unmitigated, agony. The bullying, the loneliness, the rejection… it is never-ending. And for what? Just because I’m ‘different’?

No. No more. I am a devout Muslim, and was once against violence, but I have teamed up with a local jihadist cell as it is the only way I’ll be able to accomplish my massacre the correct way. I would not be able to do it alone. Me, and my 32 comrades, will die tomorrow in the name of Allah. Every school in the L.A. Unified district is being targeted. We have bombs hidden in lockers already at several schools. They are strategically placed and are meant to crumble the foundations of the very buildings that monger so much hate and discrimination. They are pressure cooker bombs, hidden in backpacks around the schools. They are loaded with 20 lbs. of gunpowder, for maximum damage. They will be detonated via Cell Phone. Not only are there bombs, but there are nerve gas agents set to go off at a specific time: during lunch hour. To top it off, my brothers in Allah and I have Kalashnikov rifles, Glock 18 Machine pistols, and multiple handheld grenades. The students at every school in the L.A. Unified district will be massacred, mercilessly. And there is nothing you can do to stop it.

If you do end up trying to, by perhaps, beefing up security, or canceling classes for the day, it won’t matter. Your security will not be able to stop us. We are an army of Allah. If you cancel classes, the bombings will take place regardless, and we will bring our guns to the streets and offices of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Bakersfield, and San Diego.

I wish you the best luck. It is time to pray to allah, as this may be your last day.

Notable Developments

News Media Coverage

The announcement of the LAUSD closure was immediately picked up by virtually all local news outlets in the region, including KTLA[12], ABC7[13], Los Angeles Times[6][7] and CBS Los Angeles[8], as well as major U.S. news publications and online news sites, such as CNN[16], The Huffington Post[2][3], BoingBoing[4] and Ars Technica[5], among many others.

Police Investigation

Shortly after the LAPD began investigating the e-mail threat, the authorities were able to trace its sender to an IP address in Frankfurt, Germany, though it was deemed as a preliminary assessment and not the identification of its origin. Meanwhile in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York Police Department (NYPD) officials announced that they had received the same threat via e-mail on the previous day, though they promptly dismissed the e-mail as a hoax based on a grammatical analysis of the language used in the letter.

“The language in the e-mail would lead us to believe that this is not a jihadist initiative,” he said. “…That would be incredible to think that any jihadist would not spell Allah with a capital ‘A.’”

Cock.li Email Server Subopena

Around 12:05 p.m., shortly before the officials began speculating the possibility of a hoax, Vincent Canfield[10], the owner and administrator of an underground e-mail server at cock.li (shown below, left), tweeted a copy of the subpoena documents[9] he received from the NYPD, as well as audio recordings of brief conversations he had with NYPD’s Intelligence Bureau officials (shown below, right). According to the website[11], the server provides email services for more than 63,500 accounts, many of them for domains containing expletive language and meme references, including over 3,000 accounts associated with 4chan’s splinter community 8chan.

Official Responses

By early afternoon on December 15th, ranking members on the U.S. House Intelligence Committee had released a statement saying that the threat appears to be “a hoax or something designed to disrupt school districts in large cities.” As more officials similarly began dismissing the e-mail threat as a hoax, the LAUSD’s decision came under some criticism, most notably from Bill Bratton, the current commissioner of NYPD and the former chief of LAPD, who told reporters that the closure of all campuses in the country’s second-largest school district was a “significant overreaction” (shown below, left). Meanwhile, LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines defended his decision as a proactive measure taken out of an abundance of caution, particularly in the light of the mass shooting in San Bernardino that left 14 people dead ealrier that same month. Later that day, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest implicitly supported the city officials by saying that “[he] won’t second guess the decisions made by local law enforcement officials” (shown below, right).

Impact

As a result of the district-wide closure, a total of 1,531 campus sites were inspected by 2,780 law enforcement officers over the course of six or seven hours. In addition, the LAUSD suffered a loss of $29 million in state funding, though some state officials, including State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, suggested that the funds may be reimbursed in consideration of the circumstances.

About

Everyday Life with Bicycle Cop is a fanmade spinoff of the popular series Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou, featuring the recurring character Bicycle Cop paired with the most dangerous subspecies of monster girls.

History

With the release of the anime Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou the ending title cards shown never before seen subspecies of monster girls. Some members of the /a/ board of 4Chan decided to pair the most dangerous subspecies of monster girl with the character of Bicycle Cop.

Characters

Bicycle Cop is the main protagonist of this spinoff series. He appears to be very high strung, but is still able to do his job. He cares deeply for the monster girls under his care, but is not afraid to scold them for getting in trouble.

Piper is an Echidna, which is a subspecies of Lamia that uses poison to kill instead of brute strength. Piper appears to be aggressive and a little bit tsundere towards Bicycle cop. Piper complains about Mako using her panties as a makeshift eyepatch.

Vera is a Wyvern, which is a subspecies of Dragonewt, but more resembling a Harpy. Vera appears to be cool and confident, but actually is usually zoning out. Vera has a strong affinity to shiny objects, but hates thunderstorms.

Tara is a Large Breed of Arachne, which resembles a tarantula. Tara is extremely strong and aggressive, often getting into fights with the other monster girls. She also possesses fangs and venom, although it’s not usually lethal, it has the capacity to knock out an adult male. Her fur is surprisingly soft to the touch, and like other Arachnes, she has a tendency to get drunk off of caffeine.

Mako is a Shark Race subspecies of Mermaid. Mako exhibits traits similar to a shark, being generally aggressive and snapping at whatever is near, having a sensitive nose which appears to also be an erogenous zone, a skeleton made out of cartilage, and teeth that continually regrow and fall out, having a retainer to make sure they grow in straight. The Shark Race tend to romanticize the Golden Age of Piracy, and Mako is no exception. She tends to borrow Piper’s panties to use as an eyepatch.

Iris is a Backbeard, a subspecies of Monoeye. Backbeards have amazing eye-based abilities like eye beams that can blind or incapacitate people and hypnotism. She is very self-conscious about her size, accusing people of being lolicons if they so much as look at her body. She seems to enjoy typical otaku activities such as cosplay and video games. She also has Cyclops from X-Men as her husbando

Gu (alternatively “Guu”) is a Black Slime, which is a subspecies of Slime that has turned black because it’s home has been polluted. Both her body and words are equally toxic, and physical contact with her can range from a mild irritation to chemical burns. She always seems to be instigating a fight between the other monster girls, presumably for her amusement.

About

Bad Rats is a physics-based puzzle game created by Invent4 Entertainment for the PC. The game, notorious for being known as the worst game on Steam due to it’s poor graphics and gameplay, has gained notoriety for its reviews and its use as troll gift on the platform.

History

On July 20th, 2009, the game was released on Steam. It did not receive any reviews from major reviewing publications, and was stated to be by Kotaku as “nearly universally reviled”[1].

On December 18th, 2015, Invent4 announced that a sequel for Bad Rats, titled Bad Rats 2 was to be released in 2016.

Gameplay

The game is focused on building contraptions to kill a cat using limited resources, requiring the player to build a Rube Goldberg-esque device in order to complete the task. The game lets you set up the device beforehand and play test it indefinitely, allowing infinite attempts at finishing the objective. Despite being a 2D puzzle game, the game has a Z-axis, atypical to the normal X- and Y- axis of 2D puzzle games.

Spread

Bad Rats has became an in-joke in the Steam community due to its poor gameplay and graphics, which has lead to its notability for the parody reviews on the game’s Steam store page[2], many of which are trollingly favoring the game with excessive amounts of acclaim. On December 11th, 2012, the Youtuber TotalBiscuit did a review of the game as part of his “WTF Is…” series, stating that the game “is an interesting concept, just horribly executed.” On February 24th, 2015, the Youtuber VideoGameDunkey did a play-through of the game.

Overview

Steve Harvey’s Miss Universe 2015 Gaffe refers to the mix-up of the announcement of the winning contestant by American comedian and host Steve Harvey at the 64th annual Miss Universe pageant ceremony in December 2015.

Background

On December 20th, 2015, the 64th annual Miss Universe pageant was held at the AXIS Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada, hosted by American comedian and TV host Steve Harvey. As the announcement of the final results approached towards the end of the nationally televised event, Harvey erroneously named the first runner-up, Ariadna Gutiérrez (Miss Colombia), as the winner of the pageant. However, a few minutes after Gutiérrez was crowned, Harvey returned to the stage to reveal that he had read the results incorrectly and named Pia Wurtzbach (Miss Philippines) as the winner of the pageant (shown below).

As the confused audience began jeering at Harvey’s announcement mix-up, the host immediately claimed full responsibility for his mistakes and displayed the content of the card on-screen to clear any doubts over the winner of the pageant.

Storking

0
0

“Storking” refers to a resurgence in the popularity of the Pompadour Haircut style, and its several variations, among male millennials.

ORIGINS
The origins of Storking are unknown, but it has attributed several factors. One factor may be the rise in popularity of retro subcultures, especially those associating with 1950s “Rockabilly” subcultures which often popularized “Elvis” hairstyles. The prominence of this hairstyle reached notable popularity as early as 2012, and has steadily increased in presence since then.

MATING
From an evolutionary standpoint, it has been theorized that Storking may serve as an artificial sexual mimicry, as the long hair required for the haircut makes it possible for the males to also possess feminine features which may lead to increased mating opportunities. In terms of increasing sexual attractiveness, a simple explanation could be that the haircut produces the illusion of appearing 2 or 3 inches taller in height. Height has been attributed to increased sexual attraction.

SYMBOL OF STATUS
Native American chieftains wore long bands of feathers, and this was seen as a symbol of status and power. This may also be attributed to the popularity of the hairstyle. A higher then average time and cost is required to produce this haircut, and due to its expensiveness, it may have been valued as symbol of wealth among wealthy millennials struggling for an identity.

Stealing Human Bones / Boneghazi

About

Stealing Human Bones also known as Boneghazi refers to a blog post which accused a Tumblr user of “stealing human bones from cemeteries in Louisiana.” After the accusation was made in mid December 2015, other Tumblr users began mocking the story with posts related to bone theft.

Origin

On December 17th, 2015, Tumblr user pastel-prouvaire published a post accusing Tumblr user littlefuckinmonster taking human bones from a cemeteries in Louisiana.[1] Tumblr user nopathfollowed replied with a screenshot of a Facebook post purportedly published by littlefuckinmonster on “The Queer Witch Collective” group,[4] which discussed removing washed up human skeletal remains at flooded grave sites. The original post was subsequently deleted, but remains available in reblogs. Within one week, the post gained over 36,100 notes.

Spread

That day, littlefuckinmonster published a post on the now defunct blog fuckinheathen,[3] in which she defended herself claiming she merely picked up bones that had washed up and did not disturb any grave sites. Additionally, she accused critics of racism, saying she thought she was in “a safe space for PoC witches.” That day, the fuckinheathen blog was deactivated.

No I am not digging up fucking graves jfc
Long story short a post that was posted in a queer witch collective where ‘sell’ is understood to mean ’cover shipping’ (ESPECIALLYWHEN I MADETHATCLEAR) and curse is understood to mean ’any spell you cast on another physical person’ was screen shot (just my post. NOTTHEMASSIVETHREADTHATFUCKINGFOLLOWED) and removed from the group where it had context and posted.

What has followed has been extremely racist, especially towards those who still practice indenginious craft. Physical harm has been threatened, including towards my child. (Ya’ll fuckers can cool it on that front before you really start saying shit you can’t back up. Because I swear if any of you actually have the guts to try something my automatic response when it comes to my child is to put your teeth in my alter. Try. Me.)

Here’s what happened. You can either understand there’s an entire part of the story you aren’t getting or you can continue thinking your outrage is righteous and I’m actually knee deep in bodies. I don’t care.

There are a few inground cemetaries around where I live. For some reason people think I’m going to Holt, which IM NOTAND IM NOTSUREHOWYOUALLGOTTHATCEMETARY. But anyways, bones eventually wash up. Because that’s what happens in in ground cemetaries, especially ones where it rains a lot and grounds keepers aren’t doing their jobs.

I was walking into the grave yard like I usually do once a week, because its fucking in disrepair and I try to do what I can with weeding and offerings, and I witnessed an old man digging with a shovel and a backhoe tearing into old plots. You fucks wanna threaten me yet don’t actually sit to rationally think about how in ground cemeraries actually continue to be able to have bodies buried there. I made a quick decision when I watched a few bones tumble from the dirt and into the street. I picked them up and went through the grave yard and picked up ones I saw on my path knowing that they were either going to be crushed or swept away. And I’m sorry, but for me, a spiritual person who works with death, seeing a fucking machine tear into graves like that seemed a lot less respectful to the dead you all are so concerned about, than me picking them up and saving them.

I. DID. NOT. DIG. UP. ANYTHING.
What the post fails to show is how many times I explained what I was doing.

I’m not sure how people even got that.

Anywho. I made a choice, in what I thought was a safe space for PoC witches, especially PoC witches who practice indenginious, dark, or otherwise not Wiccan/fluffy magic, to post something offering the little bits of bone I had sitting on my alter, to other PoC witches who might use human bones in their practice. Somehow this blew up into me digging up fucking bodies.

I’m not.

I repeat:
I am not digging up bodies or bones.

I’ve also been heavily shamed for my indenginious practices. Here’s the thing ya bunch of fucks.

Magic is dark. Magic is bloody. Magic is scary. Magic isn’t just fucking white light, fairy dust, bowls of honey on your damn alter. You all can stop touting the ’three fold rule’ or ’Wiccan reed’ or ’karma’ thing. That shit applies to only those who believe in it ::FULLFUCKINGSTOP::

I am not Wiccan. I am not fluffy.
I work with death and bones. Curses and hexes, the dark and the things not for the faint of heart. And you aint about to shame me for it.

Fucking ya’ll want to pretend that I’m not in New Orleans, where I have watched black voodoo priests break into crypts and steal random full bodies.

Ya’ll wanna sit there and pretend that graveyard keepers aren’t actually selling bodies or bones to hospitals and colleges. (Yeah yeah they have legal ways to do it but if you honestly think people aren’t being paid to bury empty coffins, you’re way more niave than I need to point out.)

Ya’ll want to be mad at the kid who saved some bones from being crushed, because fuck getting the actual story. Let’s go with this screen shot that in no way shows the entire story. Sure.

Ya’ll wanna prented that occult leaders, ::cough the leader of the New Orleans chapter of the OTO cough:: aren’t actually breaking into graves to steal skulls and get body parts to practice their necromancy (hint:I’m not a necromancer that’s not whatbik doing so can that pile of horse shit please)

Instead of being angry at the Frat parties that actually break into cemetaries and cause fucking damage for stupid college parties, you want to be angry at the kid who literally picked up bones from the ground to save them from getting swept away. The kid who continues to care for the cemetaties they visit, the kid who offers offerings and prayer when ever anything is taken.

Cool. Sounds legit.

But yeah. I’m knee deep in bodies, with a shovel eating and selling the bones. Sure. Whatever.

I’ve only gotten a little bit of hate mail, which reads to me as people don’t actually care, they just wanted something to be pissed about.

If you feel the need to send me hate mail please be aware that I am not actually going to read it, I’m going to delete it.

False Flag Conspiracies

About

False Flag Conspiracies refer to when conspiracy theorists describe mainstream events as having been perpetrated by governments or entities that did not actually perpetrate them, often in the name of creating diversion from another political event.

Origin

A false flag is a military operation originated by the navy, where a boat would fly the flag of another country when completing an operation, in order to fool onlookers into believing that the action was being committed by the other country. False flag operations have been pretexts for declarations of war on many occasions, including during World War II, when a false flag attack on German forces by Germany convinced the German state to attack and eventually take over Poland, and the Second Sino-Japanese War, when a Japanese detonation of a Mongolian railway was used as a pretext to attack Manchuria.[1]

False flag conspiracies first gained traction online among members of the 9/11 Truth Movement, some of whom believed that the attacks on the World Trade Center were perpetrated by the American government as a way to gain public support for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2003, the web site 9/11 review published “A History of False Flag Operations,”[2] listing The War on Terror, saying:

“War on Terror: The war was launched by Bush administration October 2001. The war was claimed to be the response on terrorism, especially the 9-11 incidents. Most of the people in the world today know that these reasons are false and that those events were based on MIH type (make it happen) inside job.”

Spread

False flag theories began recirculating in 2013, after the Boston Marathon Bombings, when prominent conspiracy theorist Alex Jones tweeted 30 minutes after the attack that he believed it was a false flag.[3] Infowars, Jones’ web site, has mentioned false flags over 9,000 times.[4]

False flags have been discussed over 27,000 times on the 4chan board /pol/] often in irony; however, the over 125 discussions of false flag theories on the subreddit /r/conspiracy are mostly, if not all, sincere.[6] The subreddit /r/falseflagwatch was created in 2012, and has over 2,200 readers.[7]

Editor’s Note: This entry contains spoilers for Undertale.

WIP

About

Omega Flowey Edits are a series of images that use images related to certain fictional characters, usually from Undertale, to create a collage of images in the same order as Undertale’s final boss, Photoshop Flowey (referred to most players as “Omega Flowey”).

Origin

The edits are based around the boss Photoshop Flowey, who appears at the end of the neutral ending of Undertale. He is displayed as a television set with human-like eyes and teeth and two large plant-like arms. His design was noted by fans for having a stark style contrast to the rest of the game, as instead of the normal pixelated appearance in his basic form, he is a collage of images, which was co-made by Everdraed.
