About

The Tales series is a popular JRPG franchise published by Bandai Namco Entertainment (originally just Namco, nicknamed “Bamco” by some gamers). The series anime-style art and character designs are provided by artist Kōsuke Fujishima (creator of Ah! My Goddess!), as well as music composed by Motoi Sakuraba. Instead of using an turn-based battle system the Tales series uses an fighting system called the “Linear Motion Battle System” where the character can move freely in an arena-like area. Another feature of the Tales series is “Titles” which provide small boosts to certain stats of the characters, though they were in the original games some “Titles” in the 3D Tales of games provide costume changes for the characters and with more recent games accessories that can be added and even altered. “Skits” are another feature in Tales games which the characters have side conversations not part of the main dialogue, most being humorous.

Origin

The original comment was made by Linda Glocke on January 21st, 2015, on an ABC7.com article about ISIS’s executions of prisoners. The article has since been deleted, but the Disqus comments section with the comment is still accessible.[1] The first known screencap, taken an hour after the comment was made, blurs out Glocke’s name (shown below). Due to the text still being clearly legible, however, her name quickly became associated with the meme.

The first known posting of the screencap was to the /r/me_irl subreddit.[2] The post gained 4,304 points (99% upvoted) before being archived. A repost to the same subreddit was made in June; this gained only 1,281 points on Reddit,[3] but over 5,000 points on Imgur.[4]

Overview

The War on Christmas is a recurring American controversy where conservative Christian Americans accuse mainstream America, especially corporate entities, of encroaching on their religious freedom by eliminating expressly Christian practices, idioms, and iconography from the public sphere.

Background

The debate over how devoted the general public should be to Christmas has been going on since the invention of secular societies.[1] However “the War on Christmas,” as a general term to describe these conflicts, first came into use in the late 1990s, when the right-wing website VDARE began their “War on Christmas Competition.”[2] The site posted as many mentions of “Holiday Parties” or other secular holiday-themed celebrations, especially those that celebrated the holiday traditions of other religions, as they could find. Although the website itself was condemned by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a “hate group,” the practice of questioning the use of the secular word “Holiday” to refer to Christmas parties was picked up by Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly in 2005, when he began encouraging his viewers to boycott retailers who used the term.[3]

In addition, that year Bill O’Reilly aired a segment which took aim at The Daily Show, on Comedy Central, for making secular jokes about Christmas. Jon Stewart aired a response to O’Reilly’s criticisms. This was the first of many back-and-forth exchanges between O’Reilly or other Fox News personalities and Stewart about The War on Christmas, which began airing every year.[4]

In 2006, John Gibson, another Fox News host, wrote a book entitled The War on Christmas, about the discussion surrounding the secularization of the holiday period of the year.[5] Each year, Fox News commentators and other conservative organizations release lists of companies who are not using Christian terminology in reference to the winter holidays.[6]

About

Supper Smash Bras: Mishon From God is a fanfic by authors PrincessAmerica, based off the popular Super Smash Bros videogame series. It is infamous for being a trollfic, similar to My Immortal. Published on Fanfiction.net in December 2012, this fanfiction focusing on the main character, Sarah, and her quest to take down Satan, gained notoriety for the numerous misspellings, blatant racism and homophobia, and Mary-Sue characters.

Origin

In December of 2012, Fanfiction.net user PrincessAmerica uploaded the first chapter of Supper Smash to the Super Smash Brothers section of the site. It quickly gained attention for the plot, in which Sarah, “a 13 yearold girl who loves America and God and the Constantution,” is visited by God after an argument with her “librul teacher”. He tasks her with stopping Satan, who has apparently entered the Super Smash Brothers universe, and sends her to fight him within the world of the videogame. Featuring homophobia, racism, sexism, and lack of proper grammar, the original fanfic was removed from Fanfiction.net sometime between December of 2012 and January of 2013.

PrincessAmerica, claiming that :“Barek Obema and teh libruls on Fanfection.net delated [the original fanfiction]”, uploaded the work to another fanfiction site, Archive of Our Own, on January 20th, 2013, which can still be found here[1]. It was completed on January 29th, 2013, and currently has 20,000 views as of November 23rd, 2015. Two sequels, “Supper Smash Bros: Mishonh From God 2: The Revanger of Satin and Obaba!!!”,[2] (and also “Subpar Smush Broas Mishan Forum God 2: The REEL Sekwel! LAUREN U R DUM[3], considered the “official” second story), and “Stupor Smesh Bras Mishen From doG 3: Teh Ultamint War Agenst Librul Evul. LAUREN UR STILDUM! IM NOTALESBAN!”[4], were also published to AO3.

On January 7th, 2015, PrincessAmerica posted a fanfiction entitled “PrincessAmerica Presents: The Ethical Adventures of GamerGate! A PrincessAmerica Production. From the Author of ‘Supper Smash Bros.: Mishonh From God’.”[5], in which she states that the whole series had been a troll attempt (something that had never been confirmed or denied in the years since the original publication). She stated that she was “getting too old for this shit,” and would be retiring from writing fanfics after she finished the third entry, “Stupor Smesh”.

Spread

Due to the subject matter and the reception on Fanfiction.net, this fanfiction gained a cult following among Smash Brothers fans. A TV Tropes page[6] exists for the series, detailing the various tropes that can be found within the four works.

This fanfiction spawned a period of copycat fanfics within the SSB fanfiction community, leading to other trollfics such as “The Hot Topic Krew”[7], and also authors writing fics in which they read and analyze the original work. Today, there are still many fics based off of the original, on both Fanfiction and AO3, created by fans of the series.

Numerous fanart also exists for the main characters, as well as various Youtube videos of dramatic readings of the original work and sequels.
