About

Witness Me is a catchphrase spoken by the characters known as War Boys in the film Mad Max: Fury Road before they commit a kamikaze-type act in battle. The phrase has become popular in online forums as a way to draw attention to one’s post.

Origin

Mad Max: Fury Road was released May 15th, 2015, and during the film, the phrase is spoken frequently by the War Boys, a group of leukemic children of the villain Immortan Joe. The War Boys usually yell the phrase after spray painting their mouths silver and before attempting to die by suicide in battle, which they believe will send them to Valhalla, or heaven. In some scenes of the film, they pair the phrase with “We will ride eternal, shiny and chrome!”

Spread

The first use of WItness Me on 4chan’s /tv/ board actually occurred 5 days before the release of the film, by a poster who was claiming that he’d seen the film and that it was good.[2] Since then, the phrase has been used about 2,200 times on various 4chan boards, often times paired with a variety of images of different characters with chrome sprayed around their mouth, including Pepe the frog.[3] Alternately, the phrase was often paired with mugshots of people who had been inhaling spray paint as a drug, which can cause the person to appear as if they had sprayed themselves in the face. The phrase is used as a comment on various other Mad Max-related memes, including the official Mad Max subreddit, /r/madmax, which calls its readers War Boys and indicates their presence by saying they are “WITNESSING!”[4] In addition, there are 122 different works of art on DeviantArt using the term.[7]

On May 23, 2015 a link was posted to r/WTF which featured an image of 2 adult males, one with his mouth painted silver chrome using car spray paint with the title “YOUWILLARRIVE AT THEGATES OF VALHALLA, SHINYANDCHROME!”, the link received 4531 upvotes and 668 comments[8]

Amazon Comment Trolling

On May 27th, 2015, the Onion’s AV Club and other media outlets reported that users posing as War Boys had been leaving troll reviews on a product called Wilton Silver Color Mist, an edible food spray used in dying cakes and other foods a chromed silver. The war boy-imitating users asked questions like “Will this product ensure my path to Valhalla? Do I need to be witnessed as well?” and left reviews like “IMMORTANJOEWILLWITNESS ME FORFINDINGTHISSPRAY ON SALEFORCERTAIN.”[5][6]

About

Lake of the Ozarks Boat Crash refers to a viral video in which seven speedboat passengers are violently thrown about the deck after hitting a large wave at high speed. On YouTube, many remixed variations of the video have been created featuring electronic dance music tracks dubbed over the background audio.

Origin

On August 31st, 2012, the Lake TV YouTube channel uploaded a news segment containing footage of a boat crash at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, where seven people were thrown back-and-forth across a boat’s deck after plowing into a wake at dangerously high speed (shown below). While all seven boaters were injured, five were taken to a hospital to be treated for “minor to moderate injuries.” In three years, the video gathered upwards of 4.5 million views and 1,100 comments. An extended video was later released, which features the boat crash at 2:17 (shown below, right).

Spread

On September 1st, 2012, The Daily Mail[1] published an article about the incident. The same day, YouTuber ohhellmaybe reuploaded a slowed clip of the crash (shown below, left). Also on September 1st, YouTuber Tom Robinson uploaded the crash clip dubbed with the 2010 dubstep song “Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites” by Skrillex (shown below, right). Within three years, the videos gained over 3.5 million and 1.4 million views respectively.

On September 2nd, Off Shore Only Forums[4] member DrReedJ replied to a thread about the video, where he claimed to have been one of the passengers on the boat and described various injuries the passengers received.

“Hey guys, I was a passenger in this boat during the accident. Yes, there are many cardinal rules broken. The most important one I feel is no life jackets worn. As crazy as it seems, we had jackets for each person but as the poker run began we realized no one else was wearing them….. How foolish we were. I have read so many nasty comments on YouTube and other sites I am in shock. My wife suffered 4 broken ribs, punctured lung and a broken foot. She has not left the house since getting home. She is in severe pain. The driver crushed his eye orbital and broke hus back at T8 ( he is a former F-2 racer with APBA). Another passenger who raced professionally for many years broke his pelvis in several places and is in a wheelchair. One of the other girls crushed her eye orbital also. The guy from lake tv fractured his hip and broke his wrist. My injuries were minor compared, busted my head open and damaged a rib or two. Everyone is black and blue. This was a very upsetting event for everyone involved. I have been around powerboats for many years and it only takes on unguarded minute to loose a life or permanently hurt people you love.”

On September 7th, the JukinVideo YouTube[2] channel reposted footage of the crash. On the following day, YouTuber Rayzed Entertainment posted an edited version of the video mixed with the 1993 dance song “What is Love” by Haddaway (shown below, left). Also on September 8th, YouTuber Julian Zamora uploaded another Skrillex dubstep remix (shown below, right).

On February 28th, 2013, the Leisure Boating YouTube channel uploaded a clip dubbed with the 2012 trap song “Harlem Shake” (shown below, left). The following day, Redditor johnny5k submitted the remix to the /r/videos[3] subreddit. Ghost (Destiny)

0
0

About

Ghost (Destiny) refers to the Destiny protagonist’s artificial intelligence companion portrayed by Game of the Thrones star, Peter Dinklage. The character has come to great online notoriety due to Dinklage’s seemingly lackluster performance for the character, specifically in the alpha release of the game, and has since been dubbed “Dinklebot” by fans as a mix between “Dingklage” and “robot”, and sometimes referred to as such in the same vein as Dinkleberg. As of “The Taken King” DLC pack, all lines originally voiced by Dinklage, as well as all voice overs for the Ghost in the future, have been replaced by prominent video game voice actor, Nolan North.

Origin

On June 11th, 2015, during the Sony conference, Playstation Blog employee Sid Shaun interviewed Bungie community manager ‘DeeJ’ about whether or not Peter Dinklage was in fact in the game. DeeJ confirmed this and went on to say:[1]

Peter Dinklage is the voice of the ghost in this demo. As you learn more about Destiny, you just might be hearing more from him.

The ghost is your interactive companion, he’s your partner, he’s your wingman. You’ll take him with you everywhere you go. A lot of Destiny is about going into these ruins of our lost civilizations and unlocking their secrets so that we can safeguard our future. The ghost is going to be a bit part of that. So when you come across technology from the golden age that fell and collapsed, when that cataclysm occurred, the ghost will be the thing that you pull out to resurrect that technology.

The interview was recorded and uploaded to Playstation’s official YouTube channel the same day (shown below).

Spread

Following the announcement of a playable version of the alpha build of Destiny, many fans began talking about what to expect from the game, including Peter Dinklage as the Ghost. The earliest known use of the term “Dinklebot” online was on June 10th, 2014, on Reddit, via the /r/Gaming subreddit in which user Merkinary inquired as to whether the Ghost was voiced by Peter Dinklage.[2]

-Merkinary
Is it voiced by Peter Dinklage? Sounded like it to me.

-infestedjoker:
Yes some people like to call him tyrionbot lol
-Scaryclouds:
Dinklebot?

Following the release of the alpha build of Bungie’s Destiny, on June 12th, 2014, many fans began to criticize the seemingly poor performance of Game of Throne’s actor, Peter Dinklage, whom had become well known for his acting abilities. On June 14th, 2014, YouTuber SevenisYellow uploaded a clip from the alpha of Dinklage’s character saying, “That Wizard came from the moon,” (shown below, right).

On June 18th, 2014, YouTuber GameZone uploaded a parody of Dinklage’s line with various impressions of other famous actors preforming the same line (shown below, left). On July 20th, 2014, YouTuber hoodwinkedfool uploaded a remix of the “wizard” line along with samples of other lines by Dinklage which were considered poorly performed (shown below, right).

Due to the backlash from Dinklage’s performance in the alpha, Bungie stated that Dinklage would re-record his lines in time for the beta.[3] On July 17th, 2014, Eurogamer uploaded a comparison video of Dinklage’s performances in both the alpha and beta (shown below, left). On October 18th, 2014, Smosh Games released an episode of the Honest Trailers series in which both Destiny and Dinklage’s performance are criticized (shown below, right). Elsewhere on the web, The website Dinklebot.net was created for personal tracking of a Destiny players character.[4] On Twitter there a various posts with the hashtag “#dinklebot”,[5] as well as on Tumblr.[6]

Notable Developments

On August 4th, 2015, Bungie announced that with the upcoming DLC, “The Taken King”, it would be replacing all lines that included Peter Dinklage’s voice acting work, and replacing it with that of seasoned video game voice actor Nolan North. The story was reported on by several news outlets,[7][8][9] as well as by “Rooster Teeth’s”: gaming news show, The Know in an episode titled “Destiny’s Dinklebot REPLACED?!” (shown below).

About

Love Nectar is a slang term for sexual fluids, which became associated to the character Anna Nishikinomiya from the anime and manga series Shimoneta after a scene in which she bakes cookies for the character Tanukichi Okuma using her own vaginal fluids. The scene and the term garnered popularity among fans of the series, due to it’s extreme nature, spawning a number of parodies.

Origin

The original scene comes from the epsiode five of the anime series, first aired on August 1st, 2015. In it, Anna Nishikinomiya prepares cookies for the characters Ayame Kajou and Tanukichi Okuma. After asking the latter about the cookies, she starts explaining how her “love feelings” for Tanukichi turn into liquid after reaching their peak, and then telling him she used her vaginal fluids (which Anna calls “love nectar” due her lack of knowledge on sexual subjects) to make his cookies. Later, on the same episode, Anna ambushes Tanukichi on their school and tries to force him into drinking a bottle full of her “love nectar”.

There are many spinoffs on the channel as well, including Metal Crotch Gameplay, prank calls and Hitler speech remakes. The channel is also a origin of Danilo Advencrs (Danilo Adventures) meme which was uploaded under the name of BESTVIDEOEVERMADE.

This series of images has an as-yet unknown creator. It features a faux-teaching writing, but with many spelling and grammar mistakes, made deliberately; the constant misspelling of ‘animals’ chief among them.

Of particular popularity is the picture of a fennec as ‘special doggo’, which the furry fandom has rapidly adopted for comedic sake.

About

King Crimson is a stand, a supernatural ability represented by a humanoid spirit, featured in the popular Japanese manga series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Due to its angry appearance and confusing powers, it is a popular subject within the fandom in discussions and fanwork.

Origin

King Crimson made its first appearance in chapter 519 of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure released in 1998[1], during the Part 5: Vento Aureo, as the stand of the main antagonist Diavolo. The name King Crimson is a reference to a British progressive rock band of the same name[2].

King Crimson appears as a humanoid figure, with its most notable features being the grinning, angered expression, and the second face on its forehead. King Crimson, on top of being a powerhouse in physical strength, allows Diavolo to “skip” time up to 10 seconds. King Crimson’s second face on the forehead, named Epitaph allows him to see for up to 10 seconds into the future.

Spread

One of the most common subjects of discussion regarding King Crimson is the nature of his ability. Due to often confusing presentation in the manga and poor translation, many fans were left wondering how does the ability to skip time work, questions about it dating back to as early as of August 29th, 2006[3]. Many explanations for King Crimson’s ability had been made, some of them even including graphs, though the most common explanation simply being “It just works”.

On October 22rd, 2012, an anonymous 4chan poster uploaded an image parodying an Apple advert containing the phrase with King Crimson’s head superimposed over the Apple logo[4]. On January 9th, 2014, a YouTuber Coleo Kin uploaded a video of Slovenian cultural critic Slavoj Žižek, made to look as if he was talking about King Crimson’s ability[5]. Over a year and a half, the video had over 17,000 views.

The post also had a comment “king_crimson.gif”, and on late August 2015 had over 7,536 notes[8]. On January 23rd, 2015, a Tumblr user kegminami posted a gif (below, right) featuring Kronk Pepikrankenitz from the animated movie The Emperor’s New Groove telling that King Crimson doesn’t make sense. In 7 months the post got over 848 notes[6].

On July 26th, 2015, a Tumblr user autotoiras posted an edited page from a manga Prison School(below, right), where Hana Midorikawa is insisting Kiyoshi Fujino to explain how King Crimson works. Over a period of a month, the post got over 1,903 notes[7].

Black Monday

Overview

Black Monday is a term used to describe major historical events that occurred on the first day of a seven-day week, especially ones that carry negative connotations or otherwise undesirable consequences. In business jargon, the term is primarily associated with a stock market crash triggered by a momentary financial collapse within a single market and leads to a chain reaction of massive declines in stock prices across the rest of the world. It is not to be confused with Black Friday, an annual shopping sale event observed on the day after Thanksgiving in North America.

Background

The coinage of “Black Monday” is attributed to the U.S. congressman John Bell Williams (D-Mississippi), who used the term to to protest the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education, a landmark case in which state-level segregation of public schools for black and white students was declared to be unconstitutional, on May 17th, 1954. However, it was introduced to the general public on a much larger scale on October 19th, 1987 to describe the worldwide stock market crash that started in Hong Kong and spread to the rest of Asian and European Markets, before eventually impacting the economy of the United States; within the same trading day, The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) fell exactly 508 points to 1,738.74 (22.61%), which remains the largest one-day percentage decline in the DJIA to this date.

The terms Black Monday and Black Tuesday are also respectively applied to October 28 and October 29, 1929, which occurred after Black Thursday on October 24, which started the Stock Market Crash of 1929.

Developments

Black Monday 2011

Entering the 21st century, the term became even more closely associated with major financial collapses through its usage on multiple occasions, most notably the sudden decline in asset values of global stock markets on August 8th, 2011, following the Standard & Poor’s unprecedented credit rating downgrade of the U.S. sovereign debt from AAA (“risk free”) to AA+ on the preceding Friday. By market close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 634.76 points (-5.55%) to close at 10,809.85, making it the 6th largest drop of the index in history.

Black Monday 2015

The second major “Black Monday” in the global stock market occurred on August 24th, 2015, when the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) Composite Index suffered a drastic decline of 8.45%, the booming economy’s worst decline in a single day in eight years.
