Rihanna's Met Gala Dress

About

Rihanna’s Met Gala Dress refers to an imperial yellow, fur-trimmed cape worn by the American pop singer Rihanna at the Met Gala event in early May 2015. The wardrobe quickly became widely mocked online and spawned a series of photoshopped parodies on Twitter and Instagram, in a similar vein to the dress worn by the pop star at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.

Origin

On May 4th, 2015, Rihanna entered the red carpet at the Met Gala in a long, bright yellow cape by Chinese couture designer Guo Pei (shown below). During the event, Rihanna posted a photograph of herself on the red carpet to her official Instagram[1] feed (shown below).

Spread

That evening, Twitter user @Mr__Harlem[6] posted a tweet comparing Rihanna’s cape to a poured omelette, gaining over 5,300 retweets and 2,800 favorites in the first 24 hours (shown below, left). A minute later, Twitter user @jazzonce[5] posted a tweet comparing the dress to a yellow condom (shown below, right).

On May 5th, the @Dominos_UK[4] Twitter feed posted a picture of the dress photoshopped as a large pepperoni pizza (shown below). Within four hours, the tweet gathered upwards of 2,500 retweets and 1,200 favorites.

That day, The Guardian[7] published a satirical article titled “How to make Rihanna’s Met Ball dress,” containing cooking instructions for making an omelette:

Take four eggs, crack into a mixing bowl with a pinch of salt and pepper. Beat well with a fork. Meanwhile, put a frying pan on a high heat. Once it’s hot enough, add a small knob of butter. When it has melted, add the eggs and move the pan around to spread the mix out evenly. When the omelette begins to firm up, but is a little raw, sprinkle over the cheese. Place on a red carpet with an arty head piece and basically win the Met Ball. Serves 2-4.

Also on May 5th, other news sites published articles about the photoshop meme, including The Daily What,[2] BuzzFeed,[3]USA Today,[8] NY Daily News,[9] Mashable[10] and The Daily Mail.[11]

About

Sarah Jessica Parker’s Met Gala Hat refers to an ornate headdress the actress wore to the 2015 Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Gala, for which the theme was “China: Through the Looking Glass.” The hat’s large and unique shape caused it to quickly be mocked online and spawned many photoshop edits.

Origin

Sarah Jessica Parker attended the Met Gala in 2015 in a dress of her own design (in partnership with H&M) and a custom Philip Treacy headdress. At 5:50 that evening, Twitter user JChiron18 tweeted a photo comparing the headdress to Aku, the villain from television series Samurai Jack, with the text “Who wore it better?” The tweet received 247 retweets and 158 favorites.

Spread

In the next twenty minutes, a variety of other Twitter users made similar comparisons, many of which received hundreds of retweets and favorites. User SartoriallyInc compared the headdress to Dragon Ball character Goku.

Funny or Die posted a Photoshop edit on Instagram where the headdress was replaced with the flame emoji. In 24 hours, the post had received more than 1,600 likes.

Smogon University

About

“Smogon University”, commonly shortened to Smogon, is a website whose content encompasses competitive Pokémon battling. It offers guides on battling strategies for people of different Pokémon knowledge backgrounds. The website was founded by ‘chaos’ (one of the developers of NetBattle, the most popular battling simulator back then) and is a considerably well-known website, visited by competitive Pokémon battling enthusiasts.

The Smogon motto is “Pokémon on the Internet: Let’s make it happen” and their mascot is the Pokémon Koffing, the name Smogon itself being the German name for this Pokémon.

Since its founding in late 2004, the site has been a subject of much debate and mockery among the Pokemon fandom.

History

Though officially established on December 18th, 2004, many of Smogon’s battlers have been part of the online competitive Pokemon scene since 1999, originating from sites such as GameFAQs, Azure Heights, RPGamer, Pojo, and The PokeMasters. Top battlers from these websites held a number of tournaments, hosted on the original “Pokémon Battle Simulator,” a web based sim written by Blizzard for the RBY Pokémon games. Other battle simulators were made, more strategies were developed, and a close knit community began to form around the game. In order to give this community a unified prescence and definitive home, Smogon was founded.

Clauses

In order to balance the game, many restrictions are placed on teams. These clauses vary between tiers, but below are the universal ones.

Endless Battle Clause: Any moveset on any Pokémon that is capable of intentionally causing an endless battle is banned from competitive play.

Baton Pass Clause: Only one Pokémon per team may know the move Baton Pass.

Evasion Clause: The moves Double Team and Minimize are not permitted in play.

Moody Clause: Pokémon with the ability Moody are not permitted.

OHKO Clause: A Pokémon may not have the moves Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill, or Sheer Cold in its moveset.

Sleep Clause: Only one Pokémon may be put to sleep on the opposing team at a time, if not induced by a move such as Rest.

Tiers

Smogon’s metagame uses a usage-based tier system, in which Pokemon are divided into tiers based on how often they are used. Generally, Pokemon in higher tiers are more powerful and useful than ones in lower tiers, though this is not always the case.

Suspect Testing

If a Pokemon is deemed too powerful for a tier by its playerbase, the Pokemon may be suspect tested. This is accomplished by creating a suspect test ladder on the simulator, and setting a certain COIL rating that players must achieve in order to vote. The Pokemon’s fate is then decided by the players who qualified to vote.

Down With Cis

About

Down With Cis is an ironic catchphrase initially created to mock cisphobia and specific threats from certain social justice activism circles against opponents of the movement, most notably “Die Cis Scum.” However, members of Tumblr’s transgender community eventually started to embrace the phrase because of the fakeness of the story it originated from. Due to the original fabricated story featuring a bus containing a horde of people wearing shirts with the phrase, it also eventually became an exploitable placed on shirts.

Origin

On April 4th, 2015, Tumblr user Forever Honest[1] posted a fabricated story featuring himself and a friend walking down the street right as a bus stops next to them, after which they are both being beaten by a horde of people from the bus wearing shirts reading “Down with Cis.” Cis itself is an abbreviation for cisgender and cissexual, which is used to describe those whose gender identities match the sex they were assigned at birth (as a complement to transgender); of which the abbreviation additionally also gained usage in certain social justice blogging circles as a negative slur towards those who question or dislike the choices of people who identify with non-standard gender practices. As of May 6th, the post managed to gather over 9,000 notes.

Spread

On April 7th, Tumblr user transgirlnausicaa[3] both created a post showing a t-shirt with the custom text “Down With Cis”,[4] which managed to gather over 740 notes in the following month. Following transgirlnausicaa’s post, the “down-with-cis” tag[2] managed to gather relatively little attention before getting active again nearly a month later on May 4th. On that date, Tumblr user sistermeme[5] also created a post featuring a scene from the animated series Steven Universe with the character Buck Dewey holding a shirt reading “Down With Cis” (shown below). In the following 2 days, the post managed to gather over 6,300 notes.

On May 5th, Tumblr user Alienspeed[6] posted an image showing Pepe the Frog from Matt Furie’s comic series Boy’s Club wearing a shirt reading “Down with Cis” (shown below, left). That same date, Tumblr user Skyerin[7] created a text post asking people to reblog if they were on the “down with cis”-bus, and Tumblr user Sourcefieldmix[8] created a text posting asking if the bus does parties. In less than 24 hours, the posts managed to gather respectively over 2,200; 4,500 and 2,600 notes. That same date, Youtube user Vivid Grim[9] also uploaded a video showing a scene of the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica with a shirt of the character Homura Akemi edited to read “Down with Cis” (shown below, right).

Due to the phrase’s nature and close similarities with “Die Cis Scum”, a phrase initially created as a serious response by certain members of the transgender community, “Down With Cis” can be described as an example of Poe’s Law. Because of this, deployment of the phrase has become a form of flame trolling by Tumblr’s transgender community and supporters to gather replies taking it serious. On May 6th, Tumblr user Chandra Nalaar[10] created a post highlighting several reactions from people who believed Forever Honest’s original fabricated story (shown below). In less than 24 hours, the post managed to gather more than 4,100 notes.

About

Gluten Free Diet is a diet that avoids any foods containing the protein composite gluten found in wheat, barley and rye grains. Traditionally, the diet has been adopted by people suffering from the autoimmune disorder celiac disease,[2] which can be aggravated by consuming foods containing gluten. Online, the diet has been criticized and mocked for being trendy and lacking tangible health benefits.

Origin

Traditionally, the diet was adopted by people who suffer from a sensitivity to gluten resulting from celiac disease, which is estimated to affect only 1% of adults worldwide.[1] In 2011, cardiologist William R. Davis released the book Wheat Belly, which claims that modern wheat is toxic and urges readers to avoid consuming food with the grain. Within one month, the book became a New York Times bestseller, which has been credited with popularizing gluten free diets among those without celiac disease.[3] Various claims in the book have since been refuted by critics who argue Davis’ conclusions are not supported by scientific evidence.

EVERDREAMTHISMANTHEMYSTERIOUSMANDIAMOND OR JIBANKRISHNAWHOAPPEARS IN DREAMSANDREALITY IN LIFETIMEANDAFTERDEATH AS UNKNOWNMAN

INTRODUCTION:

I am going to narrate a very strange phenomenon happening since the early part of 20th century encircling a person known as Diamond or Jibankrishna who was born in 1893 at Howrah Town near Calcutta (now Kolkata), India.
His achievement of God-the-Preceptor in the form of Sri Ramkrishna at 12 years 4months age and thereafter having spontaneous numerous divine realizations made him visualizing ‘Atma’ or ‘Soul’ or God in the form of God’s light as described in Upanishads at 24 years 8 months age transforming his image into the Soul of every human being and as a result, a miraculous incident began to initiate.

Some innumerable people including men, women and children of all ages see this particular man in dream, in meditation, in trance and also in awakened condition. Nay, not only that, it so happens that whoever comes in contact with him, sees him to instruct about religion either in one or more or in all the four items.

The case is so with the Hindus, the Muslims, the Parsees and the Christians. It transpires that a man belonging to any religion of the world, if comes in contact with him, he shall be seeing him to instruct religion in one way or more in others.
The occurrences take place in the following ways :

(1) They see him those who come in contact with him.

(2) The women folks and the children after hearing about him from their husbands or any relative or any neighbor even, they see him in all the four ways as mentioned above.

(3) There are some people who without hearing about him or without seeing him, get him in dream or in trance, or in meditation or in awakened condition, even in some cases as a man alive and get instructions about religion.

(4) Furthermore, we got a report that one gentleman after coming to him declared that he saw him in this very posture some 50 years ago while he was merely a boy of 10 years old and the man who is mentioned here was 15 years old; and to add to it a good number of people, who have seen him now, saw some 30, 20, 15, 10, 7, 5 and 2 years before they come in contact with him and even in the very night before the day he came to him.

To all intents and purposes, it appears to be mysterious and a wonder. He even does not know the cause how this happens when we approach him to solve the problem he says that he does not know. The thing happens so far he knows and it transpires that he is sincere in his declaration. All these things are happening clearly and distinctly with a large number of people for the last 69 years. Otherwise it appears that the thing has its start with him when he was a boy of 15 years old and evident corroborates the fact. I am citing here a particular incident from the West which happened during the World War II, in the hard winter of December, 1939. A Frenchman, Paul Adam by name, who was a commander of the Machine Gun Division in the Maginot Line and he was overpowered with the fear of sure and imminent death due to onrush of the Germans and in the night he dreamed this Gentleman, who spoke to him “you will never die in the battle” and directed him “to come to India after the war is over.” In fact, since 9 years, this Frenchman is here in India and now a Professor of French in the Mithila Institute. This Frenchman came to this gentleman who is the Living figure of all these wonderful happening on the 11th December, 1958 and narrated the above dream to him and he recognized the gentleman.

The person who is the center of this rare happening is a living old man leading a very simple and ordinary life of retirement and never goes anywhere out of his residence. The main striking feature is that he always teaches about religion to us in dreams, in trance, in meditation and in awakened condition as a living man in our own home. When we meet him be talks only about religion, religion, religion or God, God, God and nothing else as it transpires God first, God last and God for ever and nothing else.

Now what is the effect of seeing Jibankrishna within the body? We have witnessed and still are witnessing the following effects : (1) The seer becomes purified in mind and feeling; (2) The seer sees different sportive forms of God through dreams; (3) The seer gets Diamond as God-the-Preceptor who guides and teaches the seer on spiritualism throughout his life; (4) The seer achieves perfectness; (5) The seer grows a sense of oneness with all within himself.

The theory of attaining Godhood and its proof has been mentioned in different Upanishads in various ways which are as follows:

Brihad Aranyaka Upanishad(2.5.13) has mentioned-
“The shinning immortal Person who is in this mankind and with reference to oneself, this shinning immortal Person who exists as a human being- he is just this Soul, this Immortal, this Brahma, this All.”

Svetasvatara Upanishad(3..11) has mentioned-
Who is this face, the head, the neck of all; Who dwells in the heart of all beings; All pervading is He and bountiful; Therefore omnipotent and kindly(Siva).

KathaUpanishad (6.14) has mentioned-
When are liberated all; The desires that lodge in one’s heart; Then a mortal becomes immortal; Therein he reaches Brahma.

SvetasvataraUpanishad (4.3) has mentioned-
Thou art woman, Thou art man; Thou art the youth and the maiden too; Thou as an old man tottering with a staff; Being born, Thou becomest facing in every direction.
The era of Jibankrishna reveals that a man may see all the sportive forms of God with all His attributes in dreams and becomes Brahma to be united with each human race bearing love for each other and be united in a point which is the first occurrence of its kind in the world history.
I shall discuss this strange phenomenon under four categories;
1. People seeing him in dreams and physical body in his life time as unknown person.
2. People seeing him in physical body after his death.
3. People seeing him in dreams after his death.
4. People seeing him in dreams by merely reading his book.
