Goodnight 4chan Threads are threads on the imageboard 4chan where the original post simply says “goodnight”, followed by the name of whatever board the thread was posted on. These threads are often accompanied by several recurring kinds of images.

Origin

Goodnight threads have been posted to 4chan for a very long time, reaching back to at least 2008.^[1] Over time, the images accompanying these threads have picked up two trends: one based on a drawing of a man made in MS Paint sleeping in a bed, and the other one based on an image of the character Mona sleeping on a futon. The Mona variant is the older variant, dating back to 2009 and originating on /a/ (Anime & Manga).^[3] The MS Paint variant dates back to 2011.^[4]

The MS Paint variant image has been posted over 900 times on 4chan. The Mona variant image has been posted nearly 500 times. A screencap of a thread featuring the MS Paint drawing was posted onto the subreddit /r/4chan in 2015, where it gained over 2000 upvotes.^[2]

Riyadh Life is a hashtag associated with various videos and photographs highlighting casual aspects of everyday life in the capital city of Saudi Arabia that are lesser known in the Western world.

Origin

On April 17th, 2015, a custom multimedia feed titled “Riyadh Life” emerged on Snapchat’s “Our Story” section, which curated a variety of short video clips and photographs highlighting rare glimpses of vibrant and modern life in Saudi Arabia. While the original image and video submissions featured on Snapchat subsequently faded into ephemera (as intended by the design of the app), many notable examples were soon reposted on other social media sharing sites, most notably on Twitter and YouTube. On April 19th, YouTuber English with Dan uploaded a compilation video titled “Snapchat Story | Riyadh life” (shown below).

That same day, a collection of notable examples from Snapchat’s “Riyadh Life” feed were reported on by social media strategist and blogger Jesse Wojdylo, along with several screenshots of videos that had been since rendered inaccessible, as well as on the English-language Saudi Arabian travel guide site Destination Riyadh. On April 20th, The Washington Post^[2] became the first major English-language news publication to cover the trending hashtag on Twitter, which described the phenomenon as a social media initiative to counter various negative preconceptions about the oil-rich kingdom in the Western hemisphere. On the following day, #RiyadhLife was also picked up by Saudi Arabia’s English-language news site Arab News^[3] and the UK news publication The Independent.^[4] According to Topsy^[9], #RiyadhLife has been mentioned over 130,000 times on Twitter^[10] within the first week of its appearance on Snapchat.

Sneople, a portmanteau of the words “snake” and “people”, refers to a race of reptilian humanoids mentioned in an episode of the animated television series Steven Universe. In April 2015, the term was popularized on Tumblr along with other portmanteaus, including “snurch” (snake + church), sneeple (snail + people) and sneme (snail + meme).

On October 30th, 2014, Episode 31 Season 1 “Keep Beach City Weird” of Steven Universe was broadcast on the Cartoon Network, in which the character Ronaldo tells the protagonist Steven about his theories regarding snake people (“sneople”) who plan to take over the world (shown below).

That day, Tumblr user queensnufkin posted a webcomic of Ronaldo from Steven Universe held captive in a snake church (shown below). In the skater prank video CKY2K by Bam Margera and Brandon DiCamillo, originally released on May 22nd, 2000, a woman asks strangers on the street if they would like to “go behind a building a fuck” (shown below).

On July 16th, 2008, YouTuber HOYpinoyNINJA uploaded a video titled “What happens if you ask a random person to do you?”, in which he asks random men and women if they will sleep with him (shown below, left). On September 20th, 2010, YouTuber OGFurious uploaded a satirical pickup artist instructional video, in which a man tells a woman he is “I’m going to fuck your butt cheeks” (shown below, right).

On June 3rd, 2013, the SuperWingmen YouTube channel uploaded a video titled “Asking Strangers to Have Sex,” featuring a man propositioning strangers in public (shown below). Over the next two years, the video gathered more than 10 million views and 3,500 comments.

On July 29th, the Whatever YouTube channel uploaded a video titled “Asking Guys For Sex (Social Experiment),” in which YouTuber Andrea Wendel asks random men if they will have sex with her (shown below, left). Within two years, the video gained over 25 million views and 23,000 comments. That day, Redditor Superlative_ submitted the video to the /r/videos^[1] subreddit, where it gathered upwards of 1,900 votes (77% upvoted) and 3,600 comments prior to being archived. Also on July 29th, the Whatever channel posted another prank video in which a man asks 100 women for sex (shown below, right). Over two years, the video reached upwards of 16 million views and 24,000 comments.

On August 1st, 2014, the Whatever channel uploaded a follow-up video titled “Asking 200 Girls For Sex,” in which a man asks 200 random women if they will sleep with him (shown below, left). On December 1st, the SoFloComedy YouTube channel uploaded a prank video in which a man asks strangers on a beach if they want a “Sex on the Beach” cocktail (shown below, right).

On March 4th, 2015, YouTuber YesCreedYes uploaded a prank video of a woman asking strangers in public if she can perform fellatio on them (shown below, left). On April 20th, the Whatever channel posted another follow-up video in which Wendel approaches 100 single men and propositions them for sex, gaining over 1.5 million views and 4,600 comments in the first 72 hours (shown below, right).

The Steam Workshop Paid Modding is an event announced by Steam which suggests to implement a way to support the people who mods games by paying a price for it’s use.^[1]

Background

On April 23, 2015, Steam announced^[2] that their Steam Workshop modding service will allow modders to put a price (either a fixed price or a “pay-what-you-want”) on the mods that they have made, with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim being the first game to feature paid mods in the Steam Workshop. The initial reaction of this announcement was negative due to the fact that many PC gamers do not want to pay for something that is usually for free, and that has been a staple of PC gaming since the 90s (as well as a part of Valve and Bethesda’s history). Due to the negative reaction of this, anti-paid mods steam groups such as MODGATE2015^[3], Say NO! to paid mods^[4], and Boycott Buying Workshop Mods^[5] were formed in protest of this.

A wide portion of the Steam userbase has reacted already to the recent announcement in which it started to lead on creating groups against the idea, making petitions to remove the paid content option and spamming on the Announcement’s comments, and profiles of modders that already have entries for the game Skyrim. (Similar to the Diretide Incident in 2013)

Aside of the whole idea, many are upset aswell from the fact that Valve is gonna take 75% of the profit the mods will make from users, leaving the users with only a 25%, knowing how they did all the job on coding the stuff they create while Steam gains more for simply hosting them.

Payday: The Heist is a cooperative, first person shooter (FPS) released in 2011. The gameplay features numerous guns to be used to complete objectives such as robbing a bank or stealing an object. It has since spawned a sequel, Payday 2, released in 2013.

History

The original game was first released on October 18, 2011, for the PC. A Playstation 3 (PS3) version was released a month later, on November 2, 2011. The featured four robbers (Dallas, Hoxton, Chains, and Wolf) who perform numerous heist throughout the game. In August 13, the sequel Payday 2 was released, on both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3

Pocket Sand is when sand or other granular objects are kept in the pockets for use in self-defense. If a person using pocket sand is in a confrontation, they can draw the sand from their pockets and use it to temporarily blind or distract their opponent. There is an online community of people interested in uses and deployments of Pocket Sand.

Origin

Pocket Sand was the invention of Dale Gribble, an amateur survivalist character on the popular television show King of the Hill. In the 2001 episode titled “Soldier of Misfortune,” (Season 6, Episode 106) Dale is fighting with a man and yells “Pocket Sand!” before taking sand from his pockets, throwing it in the man’s eyes, and running out of the room.^[1]

Stock Photos are free license photos used to describe certain situations, and typically involve people whose models usually portray demographics or stereotypes. Stock Photos are known for their crude illustrations of otherwise normal situations involving odd gestures or facial expressions, cliches and sometimes unusual situations.

History

Stock photography dates back to the mid-1880s with the invention of the half-tone printing press used then by newspapers to reproduce photographs, however in 1920 a company called RobertStock was founded, which was the first major stock photography company. The popularity of stock photography grew in the 1980s when stock photographs were first made specially for publication in the stock photobooks such as “Sell & Resell Your Photos”, eventually leading to stock photographs being sold through the internet, starting with iStock in 2000. Notable Stock Photography websites include Getty Images, Shutterstock and iStock.

Online Presence

Stock photos are often mocked online for their surreal or unrealistic portrayals of everyday life. Stock Photos are commonly captioned, edited or used as reaction images on sites like 4chan, Reddit or Tumblr.
On January 31st 2012, the r/stockphotos subreddit was created, but was replaced by r/wtfstockphotos a day later. Both subreddits were made to share stock photos that users found funny, awkward or bizarre. As of April 2015, the subreddit has over 19,000 readers. On October 31st 2013, the r/youdontsurf was created, where users took stock photos and captioned them. As of April 2015, the subreddit has over 165,000 readers.

Origin

On April 21st, 2015, the second-leg of the 2015 UEFA Champions League quarterfinal match between Italian football club Juventus and French-Monacan football club A.S. Monaco went underway at Stade Louis II in Monaco, with Juventus holding a 1-0 lead from the first-leg of the quarterfinal held in the previous week. Less than a minute into the game, Juventus defender was booked for a yellow card for committing an intentional handball after losing possession of the ball (shown below). Despite Monaco’s hard-pressing offensives, the match ended in a scoreless tie, resulting in Juventus’ advancement to the semifinals.

Miguel’s Guitar (alternatively known as ’Miguel’s Banjo’ or ’Miguel’s Ukelele’) refers to the popular gif of Miguel, one of the protagonists in the animated DreamWorks film The Road to El Dorado, playing his guitar (more accurately, his lute,) fervently in one of the first scenes of the movie. The gif has been parodied and deviated upon multiple times, often with other fictional characters furiously strumming their own stringed instruments with a hunched pose and/or a serious facial expression.

Origin

The specific scene in the 2000 movie The Road to El Dorado where Miguel performs his iconic strumming happens when the duo, Tulio and Miguel, attempt to gamble for the legendary map that leads to El Dorado, the city of gold. Miguel plays the lute to add dramatic, if not untimely, flair. The gambling eventually turns sour and chaos ensues.

“It Says You Are Gay” is a catchphrase associated with a painting of an old man pointing a book while talking to a kid. The picture, often used to describe dislike of someone’s opinion, has become an exploitable and inspired a series of image macros.

Origin

The original image was created by the surrealist painter Viktor Safonkin on 2004, on a painting called Dogma, despicting an old man talking to a kid while pointing a book.^[1] On July 29th, 2010, a captioned version of the painting was uploaded to the Finnish website Naurunappula.^[3] The image recieved over 31,000 views in less than five years.

On February 16th, 2012, user Kodaka uploaded to the meme sharing website MemeCenter the captioned picture, gaining over 250 likes in three years.^[2] On November 14th, 2013, a comment on the media sharing page FunnyJunk featured an image despicting an edited version of the painting with the caption “It Says You’re Heretic”, as a reference to heresy from Warhammer 40,000.^[4]

Fairy Tail is a manga series written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima, for the weekly shonen magazine. It takes place in the kingdom of Fiore, a magical world where magic flourishes,and mages are a common sight,.The plot revolves around Natsu Dragneel, a “Dragonslayer”, accompanied by his loyal companion “Happy”, a blue cat with the ability to fly. Natsu is on the search for his father Igneel(who ironically is a dragon himself). Natsu then bumps into an 18 year old girl named Lucy, whose dream is to be a mage of the famous mage clan “Fairy Tail”. Natsu being a member of the clan himself helps Lucy to fulfill her dreams, where afterwards we are introduced to more whacky characters with their own unique traits,and attributes.

History

Fairy Tail’s first volume was released on December 15th, 2006, and the anime adaptation for this series began broadcasting during 2009. Fairy Tail’s timeline is interlinked with another one of Hiro’s manga series known as Rave Master^[1] but Fairy Tail had more appeal over Rave Master (probably because of it’s ecchi nature).

Reception

Fairy Tail had won over the hearts of many mangamaniacs, and it’s fifth volume had taken the seventh spot on a list of top ten manga, and by 2011, Fairy Tail had become the fourth best selling manga in Japan. It’s anime adaptation had also done extremely well, because the anime not only won “Best Anime Award” in 2010, but it also survived cancellation. The anime was originally intended to stop after the “Phantom Lord” arc, which is why Gildarts, the clan’s strongest mage was not mentioned until after the arc. Fans loved the anime so much that the animators decided to continue the show.

MyIdol, also known by its Chinese name 小偶 – 我的3D萌偶, is a mobile application that allows users to upload a selfie which will then be transposed on to one of a variety of personalized avatars. Users can then choose from a variety of different environments and song styles for the avatar to perform. The app also allows the user to share the performances on a variety of social media platforms.

History

Version 1 of the current version of the app was uploaded to the iOS App Store on August 6th, 2014. Despite the app only having Chinese language support, it began trending as an App Store download in America in late April, 2015.

Online Presence

The origin of the app’s American presence is unknown. However, between April 21st and April 22nd, 2015 it skyrocketed in popularity among users of social media networks. On April 22, technology blog Kotaku called myIdol “the Internet’s Funniest New Obsession,”^[1] and gave users detailed instructions on its use so that users who couldn’t figure out the Chinese instructions could upload their avatars. Celebrities, including Miley Cyrus and Lena Dunham, created their own avatars as well, tweeting them out to their social media followings and further spreading the app.

Between April 22nd and April 24th, the app was trending on Vine, Instagram, Twitter, and Tumblr. ^[3][4][5][6]
