That day, Redditor KingGorilla posted the video to the /r/videos subreddit, where it gathered more than 1,200 votes (87% upvoted) and 130 comments in the first 72 hours.
Bill Cosby Stand-Up Routine
In November 2006, comedian Bill Cosby settled a civil lawsuit with a woman who claimed he had drugged and sexually assaulted her in 2004. By the end of the settlement, 13 other women had come forward claiming he had sexually assaulted them. In October 2014, Buress called Cosby a rapist during a stand-up performance in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in reference to the lawsuit. The video was widely circulated online and resulted in a wave of news media coverage regarding the accusations.
“He gets on TV, ‘Pull your pants up black people, I was on TV in the 80s. I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom.’ Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby, so turn the crazy down a couple notches.”
Justin Bieber’s Roast
In late March 2015, Buress participated in Comedy Central’s roast for Justin Bieber, during which he insulted the pop star’s music by saying, “I hate your music more than Bill Cosby hates my comedy” (shown below).
On March 31st, Buress tweeted an image macro of his joke that was cut from the roast, garnering upwards of 15,000 favorites and 11,000 retweets in the first 48 hours (shown below).
Mistakes into miracles is an art label to describe ridiculous character pairings which is mocking the regular character pairing trend on the web, generally on the art sharing site Deviantart. Desert Bus for hope is an annual stream, taking place in around november, presented by the crew to raise money for the charity Child’s play by streaming the famously bad video game ‘Desert Bus’, in which the player drives a bus down a straight, featureless road between Tucson, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada in real time, for at least 5 days non-stop. Viewers can donate by just giving money or purchasing items in auctions, including a trip to Las Vegas to see Penn and Teller, provided by the illusionist and game creator himself, which raised $7700, and a Kill La Kill scissor blade, which eventually sold for $8000. Each dollar contributes ‘buying’ an extra hour of streaming time, with subsequent hours cost exponentially more. As of their most recent fundraiser, desert bus for hope 8, the crew has raised over $2 million for the charity, and been interviewed by several notable news outlets including NPR and the CBC. the Desert bus for hope twitch channel has over 7700 followers.

Stronger Than You is a song by the character Garnet (Estelle) from the animated television show Steven Universe. As the climax of the season finale, the song has inspired fans to create remixes, instrumentals, covers, and fan art based on it.
And I’m never going down at the hands of the likes of you
Because I’m so much better
And every part of me is saying “Go get ‘er.”
The two of us ain’t gonna follow your rules.
Come at me without any of your fancy tools.
Let’s go, just me and you.
Let’s go, just one on two.
Go ahead and try to hit me if you’re able.
Can’t you see that my relationship is stable?
I can see you hate the way we intermingle.
But I think you’re just mad ‘cause you’re single.
You’re not gonna stop what we’ve made together.
We are gonna stay like this forever.
If you break us apart we’ll just come back newer.
And we’ll always be twice the gem that you are.
I am made of love.
Mm mm mm mm mm.
This is who we are.
This is who I am.
And if you think you can stop me
Then you need to think again.
‘Cause I am a feeling
And I will never end.
And I won’t let you hurt my planet,
I won’t let you hurt my friends.
Go ahead and try to hit me if you’re able.
Can’t you see that my relationship is stable.
I know you think I’m not somethin’ you’re afraid of.
‘Cause you think that you’ve seen what I’m made of.
But I am even more than the two of them.
Everything they care about is what I am.
I am their fury.
I am their patience.
I am a conversation.
I am made of love.
And it’s stronger than you.
And it’s stronger than you.
And it’s stronger than you.
The song can be heard in the 49th episode of Steven Universe titled Jail Break, the final episode of the first season released on March 12, 2015.

Indiana and Arkansas Religious Freedom Restoration Acts, also know as Indiana SB 101 and Arkansas SB 975, are two bills passed in March 2015 by the state legislatures of Arkansas and Indiana. The bills are controversial due to the fact that they allow businesses and individuals to assert that their religion is a defense in discrimination lawsuits, exempting them from federal non-discrimination laws.
The federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act was passed in 1993. This law was partly intended to protect the religious freedom of Native Americans, allowing them the ceremonial use of peyote and the ability to conduct ceremonial gatherings on land they considered sacred. However, in 2014, the Burwell vs. Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decision recognized a corporation’s right to religious belief, and shortly thereafter, several states introduced bills that would allow corporations to discriminate based on those beliefs. In Arizona, Governor Jan Brewer vetoed a bill in 2014, but in March 2015, the governors of Indiana and Arkansas ratified theirs.
Before Governor Mike Pence ratified SB 101 in Indiana, many online groups, including the National LGBTQ Task Force were calling on him to veto it. When that didn’t happen, their campaigns reoriented towards protest and boycott. The bill experienced widespread criticism from people as disparate as Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, Inc, and pop-singer Miley Cyrus. Arkansas passed a similar bill on April 2nd, 2015.
Senator Cotton thinks gay community needs to get “perspective” cuz “In Iran they hang you for the crime of being gay.”— Miley Ray Cyrus (@MileyCyrus) April 2, 2015
The passing of Indiana’s bill led to a large outcry online, with the creation of many comics, protest based image macros, and other internet-based conversation.
Boycotts of Indiana
Shortly after the bill was signed, businesses and individuals across America began to announce boycotts or cessation of business ties with the state of Indiana. Eight municipalities, including the state of New York and the city of San Francisco, banned non-essential travel to Indiana by state employees. Large non-profit Angie’s List halted the expansion of a business campus and many other companies issued statements against state.
March 31st, 2015, the owners of Walkerton, Indiana pizzeria Memories Pizza told local TV station WBND that, based on their Christian beliefs, “If a gay couple came in and wanted us to provide them pizzas for a wedding, we would have to say no.” Many national news publications, including TMZ, picked up the story as being the first instance of an Indiana business refusing to serve customers.
Soon thereafter, Memories Pizza’s Yelp page was flooded with over 300 reviews both for and against the decisions of the owners.
The pizzeria received many harassing phone calls, and a hoax was spread on Reddit and Tumblr with images claiming to be screenshots of their hacked web site, which purportedly sold a penis-shaped pizza.
On April 1st, 2015, the pizzeria closed to avoid this harassment, and a GoFundMe campaign was launched to raise money for the owners. As of April 3, 2015, the GoFundMe page has received over $600,000 in donations, much of them anonymous.
The Sentencing of Purvi Patel
On Monday, March 30th, 2015, Indiana woman Purvi Patel was sentenced to 20 years in prison for feticide, after having claimed to have a stillborn, premature baby and disposing of its body inappropriately. The state of Indiana claimed that Patel had induced an abortion at home with drugs she bought online, though none of the drugs were found in her bloodstream at the time. Her sentencing, seen as harsh, especially after a trial filled with potential flaws, added to the outcry against the morality of the state of Indiana.
Changes to SB-101
On April 2nd, Governor Mike Pence of Indiana signed an amendment to SB 101 to include anti-discrimination safeguards. The changes included the nullifying of the clause that would allow businesses to refuse services to people based on religious belief, but it did not add protection for the state’s LGBT community.

Meanwhile on Tumblr, the HelloIamCoppy and Coppy666 blogs were launched, featuring photoshopped images and animated GIFs of the April Fool’s Day character. At midnight, Coppy was removed from the site, leading user Sowamemeski to posted a fan art image of Coppy ascending to heaven, which garnered upwards of 24,000 notes in the next 48 hours (shown below, right).
On April 2nd, Tumblr user CheerAndCosplay posted a series of Coppy screenshots in memory of the parody office assistant, gathering more than 1,200 notes in the first 24 hours (shown below). Additionally, Tumblr announced that an official Coppy T-shirt had been added to the Tumblr merch store (shown below, right).
The same day, BuzzFeed published a compilation of notable jokes and fan arts dedicated to the copy machine character. Also on April 2nd, Redditor Strangsler submitted screenshots of several Tumblr posts complaining about Coppy to the /r/TumblrInAction subreddit (shown below).
Pastel Goth, also known as “nu goth” or “soft grunge,” is a fashion trend marked by pastel-colored apparel and hair accompanied by alternative-style clothing often associated with the “goth” subculture.

On July 8th, a Facebook page titled “Pastel Goth” was launched, which gathered upwards of 43,000 likes in the next three years. On March 30th, 2014, YouTuber Alexa Poletti uploaded a pastel goth makeup tutorial video, which gained over 1.5 million views and 3,000 comments in the first year (shown below). On April 13th, BuzzFeed published an article about the fashion trend. On October 28th, MTV published an article titled “22 Items For Your Pastel Goth Starter Kit.” On November 22nd, YouTuber TiffyQuake posted another pastel goth makeup tutorial (shown below, right).

Memeing is a internet slang verb that means to create or spread a meme, or make something the subject of a meme. Since 2014, the verb also became more popular to mean using internet memes or communicating through them, with phrases like “Get Memed On” being created alongside it.
We need a name for the new replicator, a noun that conveys the idea of a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation. ‘Mimeme’ comes from a suitable Greek root, but I want a monosyllable that sounds a bit like ‘gene’. I hope my classicist friends will forgive me if I abbreviate mimeme to meme. If it is any consolation, it could alternatively be thought of as being related to ‘memory’, or to the French word même. It should be pronounced to rhyme with ‘cream’. [Richard Dawkins, “The Selfish Gene,” 1976]
[Researching: Because slang entries are extremely difficult]
On March 28th, 2012, the South Park episode “Faith Hilling” first aired, which centers around memetic trends, in particular photo fads. Digg is a social news website where users can submit links and vote on stories submitted by others, which brings the top voted submissions with most “diggs” to the top of the homepage. One of the early adopters of news aggregation model in online publishing, Digg’s voting and submission system went onto inspire many other similar sites, most notably Reddit.
Digg was developed in November 2004 by American entrepreneurs Kevin Rose, Jay Adelson, Owen Byrne and Ron Gorodetzky. The name “Diggnation” was initially suggested but Rose settled on the name “Digg” after he unsuccessfully attempted to purchase the domain names dig.com and digdig.com. After Rose invested $6,000 into the site that was meant to be a down payment on a house, the site launched on December 5th, free of advertisements. The initial goal of Digg was to focus on news stories rather than of sharing bookmarks for static sites people would visit regularly.
Since its launch in October 2004, Digg has undergone numerous redesigns. In May 2005, Digg 2.0 featuring friends, one-click voting buttons and non-linear promotion algorithm was implemented. In January 2006, Digg 3.0 featuring expanded categories beyond its tech-related news section was unveiled. In August 2007, Digg introduced another redesign to the homepage and profile features.
Development of Digg v4
As early as 2009, Rose said that ’it’s time for Digg to get a little bit more real-time in nature". He hinted that Digg was working on what he considered as “the biggest overhaul to how everything works behind the scenes”, and he expected it to be completed “some time in the next six months”. However, the launch date was pushed back to as far as late April 2010.
On April 5, 2010, Rose returned to his post as the CEO, replacing Adelson. Despite Adelson wanting a quick launch, Rose opted for further testing and set the launch date two months further. On May 28, a list of features was released, as well as previews of the new interface.
Registration of new users were temporarily disabled on August 2 in preparation for the launch.

Broad City is a 30 minute sitcom from Comedy Central, created by and starring two young women, actors Abbi Jacobsen and Ilana Glazer, as they have various comedic misadventures. The show is popular for its portrayal of modern feminism and twenty-first century urban living.
Glazer and Jacobsen met as students at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade in 2009, where they began Broad City as a short web series, which they produced from 2009 to 2011. As of April 2015, the Broad City YouTube account had over 43,000 subscribers and more than 7,000,000 views. The web series featured short scenes with the two main characters, named Abbi Abrams and Ilana Wexler.
The web series was seen by Amy Poehler, star and executive producer of NBC show Parks and Recreation, who approached the women with the idea to develop it into a Pilot. In early 2013, the show was purchased by Comedy Central. As of April 2015, it has just aired its second season and has been renewed for a third.
Broad City follows Ilana and Abbi as they go through their daily lives. Ilana is a slacker and a partier, intent on ever greater acts of hedonism, while Abbi is the more dreamy type, hoping to become well-known for her illustrations. Both of them currently work at jobs they hate, and they both pursue relationships and dating. They are also both stoners.
Several recurring characters round out the cast, including Ilana’s friend-with-benefits Lincoln, played by Hannibal Buress; Abbi’s mysterious roommate’s boyfriend, Matt Bevers (John Gemberling); Ilana’s boss Todd, played by New York City public access television talk show host Chris Gethard; and Abbi’s boss Trey (Paul W. Downs), an oblivious fitness trainer.
Since Broad City began as a web series, it has always enjoyed a large online fan-base. The subreddit /r/broadcity has 4,156 followers, and at least ten different Tumblrs are devoted to posting GIFs and other updates about the show.
Due to the character’s frequent funny catchphrases and their exaggerated physical comedy, GIFs are especially popular.
Ilana often exclaims “Yas Queen!” when she is praising someone or excited about what they are doing. The phrase is an excited form of yes, adapted from drag culture. The phrase has become popular as a response, usually in .GIF form.

“My Hips Are Moving On Their Own” is a quote often featured in doujins and hentai manga. Its overuse and its use as a poor argumental device made it source of various parodies.

The Smash Bros Fighter Ballot is a website created by Nintendo so fans could vote for characters they wish to see in the hit all-star games Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. Online, various users have screen capped the character they voted for whilst giving ludicrous, humorous reasons as to why they should be in the game. To further improve the chances of a character to be voted into the game, propaganda for certain characters have begun circulating online just as well as the ballot screen caps in question.
On April 1st, 2015, after announcing a new DLC character for Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS, Nintendo announced they would be putting up a ballot for people to vote for new characters to become playable in Smash Bros as DLC (downloadable content.). Despite the date, the site turned out to not be an April Fool’s joke, and has then been taking seriously by gaming news sites and fans alike.
The site simply acts as a questionnaire that asks the user four basic questions: what is their gender, who is the character they are voting for, which game are they from, and what reasons could the user have for voting for said character. Once all of these questions have been filled up, the user may press confirm so their ballot may be accounted for.
Gaming news site Game Informer has reported about the top 10 characters they would vote for using the Smash Bros Fighter Ballot, considering who would be realistic and unrealistic to end up as DLC on April 3, 2015, just two days after the website was released to the public.
According to Alexa.com, the Super Smash Bros Ballot site is currently ranked 4,277 Globally and is ranked 325 in Japan.

No You Don’t Understand! is a two-panel exploitable series in which a character replies to an onomatopoeia with the phrase.
The scene originates from the manga Me~teru no Kimochi which was serialized from 2006 to 2007. In the 16th chapter of the manga, the character Tsukimi Okamura has a conversation with the main character Yoshinaga Haruka. During the actual scene in the manga Okamura replies to Haruka with “No You Don’t Understand!” prior to the dog barking, whereas the exploitable has switched the two panels around.
Somewhere in 2012, the Tumblr blog Maritova uploaded two versions of the exploitable using the main characters of the Gravity Falls series: Mable and Dipper. The original Tumblr has since been deleted, but the posts can still be found back on the Tumblr analyze website Rebloggy where they were uploaded in September 2012, with Mabel and Dipper having respectively over 5,000 and 2,600 notes as of April 2015.
